Notes: Roger ran at Pomona and the early half of the year with his former Mustang, but he debuted his new Mustang II in June at NHRA's Division 7 Opener at Sacramento. It was a pretty good debut as he won the race. He had a bit of luck along the way. His first-round 8.60 won when Dennis Geisler got out of shape and shut off. In the semifinals, a 6.62/197 beat Gary Densham's 7.55. In the final, he soloed with a 13.24 for the win when Gary Burgin had a small oil fire on the line and had to shut off. At the second NHRA Division 7 race held at Irwindale, Garten beat Billy Meyer in the first round, with a 6.67/212.76 before boiling the hides in the semifinals and losing to eventual winner John Lombardo. On July 20, he was at Fremont for the third Division 7 race. He ran a nice 6.59 but unfortunately crossed the centerline and was disqualified in his first-round race against eventual winner Jake Johnston. The following week (July 26), he was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. It was a twelve-car field with all cars making two runs and the two with the lowest ETs running in the final. In Roger's first race, both he and opponent John Lombardo had difficulty finding traction, and Garten's 7.51/199.55 lost to Lombardo's 7.22/193. He had the same problem in his second race, as his car smoked the tires. He won his round because Jim Dunn crossed the centerline, but his seven-second ETs failed to advance to the final. At the fourth Division 7 race at Bonneville Raceway in August, only four FCs showed up. Garten led qualifying with a 6.701/212.68 (Top Speed). In the only round of racing before the final, his 6.90/197.23 beat Bryan Raines' 7.16/150. In the final, he faced Dennis Geisler. The two had a good race, but Dennis' 6.72/212 beat Roger's slightly quicker 6.67/209.71. He was at Irwindale's Back to School race where he ran an opening round 6.82/214.74 to beat Dave Condit's out-of-shape "L. A. Hooker." But his second round 6.66/209.30 lost to Johnston's 6.39/227. Roger ran 216.34 at Irwindale on 10/05/75. He did not qualify at NHRA Ontario, but he ran his best ET of the year at 6.427/193.96 for the third alternate slot. Roger won NHRA Division 7 this year.
