Unfortunately, he failed to qualify and was first alternate for the eight-car show. On May 5 he was at Famoso for the NHRA Division 6 race. His 6.64/209.30 qualified #12, but his first-round 6.75/209.79 lost to Hans Kuesel's 6.57/212. |

Notes: Willard was at the third NHRA Division 3 race at Houston in April. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.72/196.50 that beat alternate Don Metz. In the semifinals, he had problems, but his 7.99 still advanced when his opponent, Charlie Smith, crossed the centerline. Unfortunately, Buff was unable to run in the final, and A.J. Seruntine soloed for the win. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals on April 23, his 6.76/202.24 qualified #7. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to 9.29 in a loss to Charlie Durel. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Sportsnationals. Willard ran 6.783/203.16 at NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/01/80. Photo from 1980 US Nationals. |

Just three weeks after the crash, he won the NHRA Division 4 race at Houston. A first-round 6.72/202.24 beat Buck Bellotti and in the semifinals, his 6.80/201.34 beat Gene Boul. In the final he met Buff and this time his 6.75/203.61 (Top Speed) got the victory. He then got his victory at the NHRA Cajun Nationals where he qualified #3 with a 6.72/205.01. He then went 6.68/206.89, 6.79/204.54 and 6.62/207.37 to beat Bogie Kell, Charlie Durel and Brian Raymer to make it into the final with Boul.
