Notes: Joe Amato logged the first 5.0-second run with a 5.090/287.72 (the best speed ever) at Ennis 10/87, only to have it bettered on the last run of the day by Gene Snow with a 5.089 at just 267.06 mph. Neither driver backed up their runs for records. Photo from Indy 1987. Earlier set national record at 279.24 at the 87 Southern Nationals, 282.13 at Indy (not backed up), and 280.98 at the Keystones. Ran 5.110 and 283.73 at 87 Cragar Classic. | Amato started the '87 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January It was an eight-car field and Joe's 5.66/247.93 qualified #4. Darrell Gwynn fouled against him in the first round, and Amato's piston burning 5.80/245.23 advanced. In the semifinals, he ran 5.77/247.25, but lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.72/250. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where his 5.42/270.27 qualified #6. He picked up to 5.38/268.49 in the first round, over Denver Schutz's 5.65/251. Gene Snow broke against him in round two, so he advanced with a 5.47/267.45. In the semifinals, his 5.50/264.93 beat Gwynn's 5.63/241. This put Amato into the final against Don Garlits. Based on ETs, the "Old Man" had the advantage, having run a best of 5.36 during eliminations. Sure enough, Garlits set Low ET in the final with a 5.29/270 to beat Amato's 5.41/258.54. Joe's next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He beat Bob Strauss in the first round, with a 5.61/257 and in the semifinals he stopped Hank Endres. This set up a Gwynn vs. Amato final. Joe took the victory with a 5.47/265.48 (Top Speed and track record). A week later (March 22), he did it again, this time over a sixteen-car field at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #4 with a career-best (to this point) 5.32/274.80. He beat Endres in the first round, with a 5.37/272.89 while in round two another 5.32 at 276.14 (Top Speed) beat Larry Sutton. In the semifinals, he ran 5.39/257 to beat Larry Minor and for the second week in a row his final round opponent was Gwynn. Amato went on to win his eighth NHRA Career victory with a new career best of 5.29 at 274.05 to stop Darrell's close 5.30/266. He was at the Texas Motorplex on April 5 for the NHRA Winston All-Star race. It was another eight-car show and Joe qualified #7 with a 5.36/266.98. A strong 5.37/274.47 lost to Eddie Hill's 5.23/271. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Joe's 5.29/278.12 qualified #2 behind Gwynn's 5.28/274. These two would work their way to the final. Amato started his march by running 5.29/279.24 (new NHRA speed record) to beat a tire-smoking Gary Ormsby. Snow also smoked the tires against him in round two and Amato advanced with a 5.35/273.05. He got lucky in the semifinals when he ran an out of shape 5.73/253.87, but won because Earl Whiting was having his own troubles and only ran 5.86/192. This put the two former alcohol dragster drivers into the final again. This time Darrell took the win. Joe went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but lost a motor in the first round, and fell to Mike Brotherton. Back on the NHRA trail, he was at Baton Rouge on May 24 for the Cajun Nationals. He set a track record 5.30 in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 272.89. Joe made his way to the final by beating Frank Bradley's 5.46/263 in the first round, with a 5.34/275.06 (Top Speed). In round two, Gwynn fouled against him and his 5.39/269.78 advanced. A semifinal 5.33/270 beat a tire blazing Hill and set up a final round meeting with Dick LaHaie. Both had run 5.33 in their semifinal races so it was close. It was a tight race, but Dick's 5.31/268 got the victory over Joe's 5.32/270.51 runner-up attempt.

Notes: Jim started the year by just making the field at Pomona for the Winternationals with his 5.36/261.32 qualifying #16. He had problems in the first round and lost to Gary Beck. At the second NHRA event of the season, the Supernationals, he qualified #13. He ran a first-round 5.15 in beating Eddie Hill, but he lost to Joe Amato in round two. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #11 and again made it into round two before he broke on the burnout before facing Earl Whiting. Jim was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. Rain canceled out qualifying, and the eleven cars that showed for the eight-car field were given one crack at making the show. Jim's 5.35/274.44 got him the pole. In the first round, he improved to 5.24/271.14, but his opponent, Gene Snow, also improved, and his 5.16/265 won. Atlanta and Memphis were the next two stops on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals, and the Mid-South Nationals and Head failed to qualify for both. He ran well at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where his 5.27/264.12 qualified #2 in the eight-car field. He had a close first-round race against Connie Kalitta that had both drivers run 5.33 (Head at 261.90), but Jim got the win light. Both he and Jack Ostrander smoked the tires in the semifinals, but Jim again came out on top with a 6.72/103.88, advancing him. In the final, he faced Pat Dakin, and it was another tire-smoking battle. But Jim prevailed for the victory with a 6.90/143.69 over Dakin's closing 6.98/170. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, his 5.16/271.16 qualified #12. In the opening round, his 5.23/271.49 defeated Frank Cook. Both he and Dick Lahaie smoked the hides in round two, where Head's 5.51/264.39 finished first. He got off the line late in the semifinal, where his 5.29/254.95 lost to Hank Endres' 5.31/269. He made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationls and qualified #11 with a 5.33/263.38. His 5.32/267.85 in the first round lost to Joe Amato's 5.22/275. During the run the Timers failed but via the ESPN Cameras showed Dakin got the win.

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. | Johns’ season started on a bad note when on January 21 thieves broke into the trailer and stole $40,000 in parts including a spare engine. The trailer was parked at the painters to get its new Jolly Rancher Candies colors painted on for '89. Lori qualified #6 with a 5.10/272.72 at Pomona for the Winternationals. Unfortunately, she lost to Jack Ostrander in the first round. At the next NHRA event, the Supernationals, a best of 5.14 failed to make the show, but she got into the field when rain postponed the event one week and Robert Reehl was unable to return the following week. Johns took his place in the show and made the most of it by beating Shirley Muldowney in the first round, with a 5.16 beating a tire smoking Muldowney. Gary Ormsby's 5.11 in the second round beat Lori's 5.13. At the Gatornationals, a 5.14 qualified #7, but in the first round, both she and Earl Whiting ran 5.22 with Earl taking the win. A 5.1/277.77 qualified #3 in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals and in round one, she beat Richard Holcomb's 5.23/251 with a 5.15/275.90. In round two, a 5.22/273.97 beat Dennis Forcelle's quicker 5.21/270, but in the semifinal, Lori's 5.73/178 lost to Dick LaHaie's 5.18/279. The next NHRA event was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. There she qualified #2 with a 5.04/279.24. Johns beat Ostrander in the first round, before losing to LaHaie's 5.08 in round two with a 5.19. The sixth race on the NHRA schedule was the Cajun Nationals. Once again, Lori qualified in the top half of the field with her 5.20/273.55 getting the #6 spot. She beat Eddie Hill in the first round, with a 5.26/271 to Eddie's 5.29. But in round two, she lost a close one to Frank Hawley when her 5.34 lost to Hawley's 5.33. She slipped a little farther back in qualifying at the Springnationals when her 5.15/275.14 was good for the #11 spot in the field. Lori beat Frank Bradley in the first round, but fell to Joe Amato in round two. From there, the NHRA tour shifted to Canada for the Grandnationals. Johns qualified #4 with a 5.19/273.06 and in the first round, a 5.28/271.82 beat Ostrander. In the second round, a 5.22/272.58 beat Darrell Gwynn's 5.34, but in the semifinal, Ormsby's 5.19/276 beat her 5.27/270.59. Whiting got her in the first round, at Englishtown for the Summernationals after she qualified poorly with a 5.22/271.90 (#13). At the tenth race of the season, the Mile High Nationals in Denver, crew chief Larry Meyer tuned her to a 5.28/265.48 to qualify #5. She beat Ostrander (again!) in the first round, and a round two 5.35/258 advanced over a tire smoking Gene Snow. In the semifinal, she set Top Speed on a 5.27/271.65 run that lost to Ormsby's 5.22/270. The next event was the California Nationals. A 5.15/276.49 qualified #11, but she lost to LaHaie in the first round. Another first-round loss came from Frank Bradley at Seattle for the Seafair Nationals. Her 5.15/274.47 lost to Frank's 5.12/284. Lori qualified for the show with a 5.13/276.66 (#10). Lori and her crew were overdue for a final round appearance, but she wasn't going to get one for the rest of the season. At the Northstar Nationals, she qualified #6 with a 5.21/273.55 and got lucky in the first round, when both she and opponent Mike Brotherton had problems and her 6.07/160 came out on top. In the second round, Lori's 5.27/264.86 lost a close one to Connie Kalitta's 5.26/278. At Indy for the US Nationals, Lori qualified #6 with a 5.03/280.98. She beat Richard Holcomb in the first round, before losing to LaHaie's 5.06/276 in the second round with a 5.13/274.47. The Keystone Nationals was the next event on the NHRA tour, and Johns qualified #8 for the event with a 5.05/280.63. She beat Mike Brotherton in the first round, with a 5.16/275.06, but once again LaHaie stopped her in the second round. This time his 4.97/284 beat her 5.19/272.14.

Notes: Had Direct Drive 2 disks non lock up. Photo from Columbus 1987. Bill ran three cars this year, his own and two different John Carey cars. When it is determined which car ran which event, use Jim Hawkins' DragStats to assign proper ETs and speeds. Best NHRA qualified times were 5.374 at Indy and 269.05 at Montreal. Where was the 5.28/273 run? This year? It was not run on the NHRA trail in 1987 or 1988. Ran Phoenix AZ D7 1/87 (Testng?)

Notes: Jack qualified #14 with a 5.31/258.39 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He beat Lori Johns in the first round, with another 5.31 at 275.81. He lost to the eventual winner Gary Ormsby in the second round. Jack went to Darlington for IHRA's Winternationals, where he qualified #3 with a 5.24. He advanced past the first-round when Jack Revelle broke on the burnout. But in the semifinal of the eight-car show, it was Ostrander who broke, giving Bob Strauss a free ride into the final. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Supernationals, and a best of 5.24 at the Gatornationals left him as the second alternate. Photo from Milan, MI, 1989. The Drag Racing List Volume 5, Number 1, Winter 89/90 has 279.76 (perhaps an IHRA run?) Ran 5.17 in Seattle. The best NHRA national event times were 5.124/278.29 at Indy.
