Notes: Tom failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he was the sixth alternate at 5.59/247.45. He did much better at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where his 5.39/255.68 qualified #14. He improved to 5.24/287.90 to upset Cruz Pedregon's 5.34/287 in the first round. He then ran 5.29/258.62 to defeat Wyatt Radke in round two. In the semi-final, he ran his best time of the weekend, where his 5.23/276.32 took out Jim Epler. That put him in his first NHRA final since the '93 Autolite Nationals. Unfortunately, he slowed to 5.40/238.28 in the final and lost to John Force's 5.05/298. Houston was not a good race for Hoover. His 5.59/219.94 qualified on the "bump," and in the first round, his 5.86/178.11 fell to low qualifier Mark Oswald's 5.15/297. He stepped it up at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #5 with a 5.22/256.33. A 5.43/234.98 beat Gordie Bonin's 5.55/227 in the first round. He then lost to Whit Bazemore in round two. Shortly after that, he raced at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was just an eight-car field; his 5.47/228.60 qualified last. He lost to low qualifier Pedregon in the first round. He was again on the "bump" at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 5.56/241.02. Being last on the qualifying sheet always forced you to run the low qualifier in the first round. That did not help Hoover, as in the first round, his 5.30/257.43 lost to eventual winner Force's 5.15/262. He managed to qualify #13 at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 5.38/231.30, but he still got beat in the first round, this time by Al Hofmann.

Notes: Scott had one of 20 FC's attempting to qualify at Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals sixteen-car field. Unfortunately, the best pass he could make was a 10.68/67.40 that was the slowest of all the FC's there. At Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. In the opening round of eliminations, he faced low qualifier Ed McCulloch, and the "Ace" banged a blower, so Scott advanced into round two, where he lost. He was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, but his 6.03/235 best failed to qualify for the all-five second field. Scott only ran Atlanta on the NHRA side, but father Connie raced the entire tour.

Notes: Larson had his best season ever in '89. He and crew chief Maynard Yingst jelled, and he went on to win the NHRA Funny Car World Championship by winning six events in eleven final round showings. He started the year by qualifying #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.38/269.62. He improved to a 5.32/259.81 in the first round, to beat Don Prudhomme's 5.50/263. Another 5.32 at 256.41 beat John Martin in round two, while in the semifinals, Bruce eased to a 12.89/54.76 to advance when Jim White broke in the "Hawaiian." In the final, he grabbed his first victory of the year with a 5.63/231.24 over Kenny Bernstein. To show it was no fluke, they then went to Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where a 5.30/275.06 qualified #5. He beat White in the first round, and in round two, he reset the NHRA ET record to 5.27 while beating a tire-smoking Prudhomme. (The "Snake" had set Low ET at 5.19 in qualifying but failed to back it up for a record). Mark Oswald smoked the tires in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the semifinals, and Larson was in his second final of the new year. Unfortunately, he blew a head gasket in the final, and his 5.58/207.32 finished runner-up to Scott Kalitta's 5.57/264. He was in another final at the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.33/276.07 qualified #2, and in round one, he advanced with a 5.40 when Tom Hoover fouled. His 5.33/273 put Bernstein on the trailer in round two, while a great 5.31/275.48 took out Chuck Etchells in the semifinals. Things were looking good for another victory when he faced Ed McCulloch in the final. Ed had been having a hard time getting his Larry Minor-owned Cutlass down the track. The "Ace's" last two runs were 6.47 and 9.76 in the semis, so Larson was the favorite. Unfortunately, Bruce crossed the centerline on a 5.67 run in the final, and Ed's 19.70 got the victory. Still, three finals in three NHRA races was nothing to laugh at. They were tough. The fourth NHRA event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Larson qualified #1 with a 5.38/266.82. He beat Oswald in round one, but lost to Mike Dunn in the second round. At Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, they qualified well with a 5.35/268.69 for the #3 spot, but in round one, Larson smoked the tires and lost to Tony McCallum. The team continued their short dry spell at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Bruce qualified #5 with a 5.55/268.73, but he only made it as far as round two, where his 5.50 lost to Prudhomme's 5.44. They rebounded from their slump at the NHRA Springnationals. There, Larson qualified #2 with a 5.30/271.32. He reset the NHRA ET record in the first round, with a 5.25 at 271.32 to beat Art Hendey. In round two, he set the track speed record with a 5.35/276.75 over a tire-smoking Johnny West, and in the semifinal, Etchells also smoked the tires against him, and his 5.33/270.27 moved him into the final against Hoover. In the final, Tom had problems and slowed to 6.79/135 while Bruce motored to his second win of the season with a 5.52/275.31. It was a dominant performance. The NHRA teams then headed to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Larson again qualified well, running 5.52/269.38 for the #3 spot. In the first round, he picked up to a 5.49/265.72 to beat White, but the Cutlass broke in round two against Prudhomme, giving the "Snake" a solo into the semifinals. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, a 5.39 qualified #6 for the show. He beat R.C. Sherman in round one, but his quicker 5.50 in round two lost to a quick-leaving McCulloch at 5.56. Maynard tuned the car to a 5.55/251.53 in Denver's thin air for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Bruce beat Kalitta in the first round, and White in the second with a 5.65/248. His 5.54/249 in the semifinals beat McCulloch and Bruce found himself in his fifth final round of the year. He made the best of it, running a 5.66/255.97 to beat Oswald's quicker 5.62/255. At the end of July, the NHRA tour was at Sonoma for the California Nationals. Larson qualified #6 at 5.42/276.07. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. Another win came at Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.31/277.00. On his way to the final, he ran 5.31/271.98, 5.35/270.10, and 5.37/271.57 to beat Kalitta, Densham, and White in that order. In the final, he faced Bernstein, and once again, Larson used his reflexes to get the victory; his 5.40/271.08 beat Kenny's 5.37/273. 1989 World Champ. Photo from Columbus 1989. Great 5.247/274.72 at 1989 Chiefs was the quickest side-by-side pass (Mark Oswald, 5.232/281.60). Ran 5.282/276.92 at Indy 1989.

Notes: First in 6.40s. WITH a 354" Chrysler punched out to 371 inches. Only NHRA national event appearance was at the Ontario Supernationals where he qualified #2 with a 6.917/205.94 and went two rounds. Quite an ET drop a few weeks later. | Although Goldstein’s 6.80 ended the year as the national record, I’d be remiss for not mentioning Bill Leavitt, who ran a stunning series of passes — 6.48, 6.51, and 6.53 — at Lions’ Grand Finale in December, though national records were not available for those runs. - Phil Burgess, National Dragster

Notes: Roger Lindamood's '72 car continued to run a stock-stroke 426 Hemi. The chassis was built by the Logghe Brothers. Al Bergler did the tin. The engine used a stock Chrysler crank that was balanced and clearanced. M/T rods and Venolia 5.2:1 pistons were used. The cam was an Isky flat-tappet and Isky also supplied the lifters and valve springs. The pushrods were stock. Also stock were the intake valves, but Donovan valves were used for the exhaust. Kenyon Porting Service cleaned up the heads, but they were not ported or polished. The blower manifold and drive came from Cragar and Gary Dyer set up the GMC 6/71 blower. To get the 90% nitro into the motor, Enderle injection was used. To get the power to the ground, it went through a Lenco two-speed back to a Halibrand quick change rear end. The paint and lettering were done by Dennis Rickleff. According to a Rodder and Super Stock article, Roger had run a best of 6.69/224 at the time. | Also ran 6.84 at Connecticut. Ran a 6.82 first-round loss to Bobby Wood (6.78) at Warner Robins in 10/72, but Roger got back in on the break rule only to fall to the Trojan Horse at 6.60/223. Roger won Lubbock Dragway's season finale over Dave Condit and the L. A. Hooker with a 7.45/201.45 in 10/72.

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1988 (same paint). NHRA mandated a new 3.20 rear end gear rule in the fuel classes. One team that was happy about the rule was this one. Ed McCulloch and Bernie Fedderly had been running the 3.20 gear since late in the '89 season. They were at Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event in January, where Ed came off the truck and reset the track record with a 5.29 at 242.45. The next day, he returned to run 5.26/265.95 before smoking the tires to a 12.27/96.54 on a follow-up run. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, McCulloch's 5.29/266.42 qualified #2 behind John Force's 5.28/275. In the opening round of eliminations, he improved to 5.27 (Low ET and a track record) at 262.39 to beat Jim White's 5.50/258 in the "Hawaiian." In round two, Glenn Mikres' 5.63/257 lost to Ed's 5.38/258.99. Things continued to go his way in the semifinals, where a tire-hazing 5.89/235.78 beat Dale Pulde, who smoked the tires hard. In the final, he faced newcomer K.C. Spurlock, the last qualifier in the field who had beaten Force in the opening round. But Fedderly dialed in too much power, and Ed smoked the tires helplessly to a 21.37/31.07 while K.C. ran 5.78/186 for his first victory. The team's next stop was back at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals. They didn't run nearly as well there as the month before; a 5.40/264.62 qualified #9. In the first round, he and Mark Oswald, who was driving for "Candies and Hughes," had a great race that saw both drivers run 5.37 (Ed at 265.48), but Oswald got to the stripe first. Qualifying did not go very well at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. McCulloch only qualified #14 with a 5.63/260.64. Fedderly stepped the car up in the first round, with a 5.31/274.13, taking out White's 5.73/188. A consistent 5.32/270.67 beat R.C. Sherman's 5.41/271 in the second round, but Ed smoked the tires against Bruce Larson in the semifinal. The next event on the NHRA calendar was the Gatornationals at Gainesville. McCulloch qualified #5 at 5.41/261.93. He almost lost in the first round, when he and his opponent, Johnny West, smoked the tires. Ed recovered first and won with a 6.69/245.63. Lane choice was not his for round two. He didn't need it as a 5.35/265.95 was enough to knock Oswald out of the show. Larson got out of shape and shut off in the semifinal, so Ed advanced with a 5.44/265.09. The final was a rematch of Pomona, with Spurlock not being as much of an underdog now. He even carried lane choice with him. But this time, Ed reversed the finish with his 5.33/267.37 getting the victory over K.C.'s 5.40/273. The next stop was Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was an eight-car field and a 5.34/265.33 qualified #4. He improved to a great 5.28/271.16 to beat Spurlock's close 5.29/275 in round one, but a wheelstanding 7.46/110.63 lost to eventual winner Force's 5.44/265 in the semifinal. It didn't take Ed long to get back in the winner's circle as he won the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. His 5.26/272.47 qualified #3. He then ran 5.35/267.30 to beat Oswald's 5.48/268. A second-round 5.44/258.84 beat Richard Hartman's 5.56/242. Larson smoked the tires against him in the semifinal and a 5.34/263.85 advanced. He went up against Paul Smith, who was driving Chuck Etchells Beretta in the final. Surprisingly enough, of the two, Smith had run the best number of eliminations, a 5.29 in round one. His semifinal 5.35 was nothing to sneeze at either. But he smoked the tires in the final, and Ed got his second win of the year with a 5.31/258.91.

Notes: Paul Miller did burnout and dry hop pass in car. Vega originally started as an AA/FA. It is a Lindblad chassis. He stretched the frame and we made longer brackets for the rearend mount. It had a 392. We were helped on the engine build by King and Marshall. D+D performance helped as the sponsor. It was the shortest car in the country at 101 in long. - Paul Miller

Notes: Rosberg went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but '73 was quite the year for the event. The track was horrible as his 7.460/203.66 qualified #6, but Dick could not come back for the rain date, and Ron O'Donnell took his place in the field. In March, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but his 6.708/214.79 best was the third alternate, but he got into the field. He lost a tremendous first-round battle with eventual runner-up Don Schumacher, 6.48/230 to 6.592/205.01. Dick was at National Trail for the second NHRA Division Three race held on May 13. He qualified #7 for the eight-car field, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 7.12 beat Joe Lee's 7.28. A semifinal 7.0/178.92 lost to eventual winner Russell Long's 6.82/202. Dick was the first alternate at NHRA Columbus at 6.936/210.28, but he got into the field. However, Schumacher got him again in round one, taking a 6.79/217 to 10.57/82 victory. That was the team's last NHRA national event. Comp number 303 was used in a 1973 photo. Was this still a Ramchargers hemi? According to WDIFL, Rosberg's # was always 303. #373 was used by Arnie Behling and Al Bergler (up to this point anyway). Dick switched to #373 later in the 70s.

Notes: Paul started the year in the Jerome Bradford Corvette, which was destroyed in Gainesville. Smith was driving the "Custom Body" Daytona at Rockingham on May 6 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 6.21/233 qualified #10, and although he improved to 6.00/223 in the opening round, he lost to Mark Oswald's 5.92/233 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. In early June, he was still driving this car at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #14 with a 5.96/243. But in the opening round, he fouled against Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Shortly after that, he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, where his 6.13 qualified #8. Unfortunately, he lost early. It gets confusing at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals as the car was now a Camaro, and "Custom Body" was still listed in the entry sheet. Nevertheless, his 5.98/238.09 qualified #13, and a 6.12/215.31 fell in the first round to Don Prudhomme's 5.87/246. Was the Camaro a typo? Because at Englishtown, the "Custom Body car was definitely a Daytona as pictures from the event show. He ran 5.887 to qualify #13 for the NHRA Summernationals. Smith lost to Kenny Bernstein in the first round. Paul did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He definitely was in the Daytona by Brainerd (and PHR Martin, as evidenced in the photo). He qualified #14 at Brainerd at 6.038/243.24 but fell off to a 6.77/130 that lost to Frank Hawley in round one. AKA Utica Flash. Danny saw Smith run. Formerly listed 5.91/252.10, but we need to validate the car in which Paul ran those times.
