Notes: Dan started the season by running a career-best (to this point) 5.52 at 256.41 to qualify #7 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He fouled away a 5.61 in the first round against Earl Whiting. He bettered his career-best in qualifying for the next NHRA event, the Gatornationals. There, he qualified #3 with a 5.48/254.09. A first-round 5.73/251.81 beat Shirley Muldowney's quicker 5.65/250. He soloed in round two with a 7.29/118.73 when Chris Karamesines could not run. In the semifinals, he had a great race with Don Garlits with "Big Daddy's" 5.50/272, winning over Dan's 5.49/256.95. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Pastorini got his first big NHRA win. He qualified #8 for the show with a 5.67/252.38, and he advanced past round one with a 7.54/101 when Jack Revelle broke a transmission. In round two, both he and Dick LaHaie smoked the tires, with Dan's 6.11/235.97 getting the win over Dick's 6.16/245. A 5.75/248.34 beat Bill Mullins' 5.78/256 in John Carey's car in the semifinals. In the final, he was up against that cagey veteran Gene Snow. The two left together, with Pastorini scoring the win with a 5.56/256.70 over the "Snowman's" 5.64/244. He got into another final at Famoso for the Bakersfield Meet in May. A 5.54/243.90 qualified #2 in the eight-car show. He beat Bill Carter in round one with a 5.53, and in the semifinals, he soloed when Whiting could not run after losing an engine in the first round. In the final, Dan came up against Garlits. Once again, the "Old Man" got the win with a 5.40/271 over Pastorini's runner-up effort of 5.57/253. Dan didn't have a very productive outing at Baton Rouge in early June for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.72/236.22, and in the first round, his 5.62/250.00 lost to Muldowney's 5.57/250. National Trail had 27 cars show up to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Dan qualified #11 with a 5.63/238.60 and, in the first round, got a measure of revenge over Garlits when his 5.69/234.31 beat Don's 5.73/251. In the second round, he beat Darrell Gwynn's 5.67/250 with a 5.60/242.39. Unfortunately, he hazed his tires in the semifinals and shut off to a 6.89/127, losing to eventual winner Connie Kalitta's 5.61/253. Pastorini traveled to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #9 with a 5.64/256.99. He lost to low qualifier Gwynn in the first round when his 5.92/254.09 finished second to Darrell's 5.43/265. One-half of the quickest side-by-side race in history at 1986 Gators, Garlits' 5.409 to Dan's 5.491. Dan qualified #10 at the World Finals with a 5.544/256.92. He lost to Joe Amato in round one. |

Notes: Charlie won the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown on May 3. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.59/211.26. In round one, he advanced with a 6.47/213.77 when John Rose broke and a 6.41/215.82 in the semifinals beat John Speelman's 6.45/193. In the final, he met low qualifier Bill Barney who was running 6.2s. The smart money was on Barney, but he had problems and shut down to 6.77/165, while Bauer picked up the victory with a 6.43/217.39. That was followed by another victory on May 17 at Cayuga Dragway in Canada for the NHRA Division 1 race. Bauer qualified #2 with a 6.68/211.26 that improved to 6.62/207.85 in his first-round win over Speelman. In the semifinals, he used a 6.64/209.79 to beat Wayne Celko and move into the final against low qualifier Bill Walsh. Once again, Charlie was the underdog, but he cut a great light, and his 6.65/208.81 beat Walsh, who set Low ET with a 6.59 at 210 trying to catch him. Things didn't go as well at the June NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove. Charlie ran 6.61/202.70 to qualify #5 in the eight-car field, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Speelman. John must have been a little worried as he fouled against him, and Bauer's 6.61/202.70 (again!) advanced. In the semifinals, he and Al Kenny ran 6.51 (Bauer at 208.81), but Al won. He went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals and qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field with a strong 6.41/211.01. A 6.46/210.92 advanced in round one when Ron Still broke, and in the second round, his 6.44/211.21 beat Tony LeBor. Eventual winner Mike Kosky beat him in the semifinals with a 6.41/213 to Charlie's 6.48/209.88. | Charlie ran the NHRA WDRS at Epping in August where he qualified #1 with a 6.39/213.27. In Round 1 Charlie faced #5 qualifier Rich Bozzelli. Charlie would get the Victory with 6.39/213.27 to advance to the Semis. He would have lane choice over #7 Qualifier Bill Walsh & ran his best ET of the Weekend 6.37/213.27 to Walsh's losing 6.56/205.47. However he would give up lane choice in the final to John Speelman after Speelman set Low ET of the meet in the other semi final pairing. However Speelman's mount broke on the burnout causing Charlie to get the solo to the divisional Victory with another 6.30 run with a 6.38/206.42. | Charlie ran 6.426/212.16 to claim the 9th alternate slot at Indy on 9/05/87. |

Notes: The team had a very successful 1978 season. Made a $6K profit. We need to understand when Howard and Ron came aboard with the Hemi Hunter guys. Some of the times we have listed with Cochrum and Haight may belong to this car. |

Notes: The Swensen & Lani team went to Connecticut for its Summer FC Championships held later in June. Arne Swensen had driven most of the early 1973 events, but now Jake Crimmins was driving for the team. In the first round, his 6.74/213.77 stopped Al Segrini's 6.87/210. He had burned a piston and had to change it for the next round. In round two, he burned two more pistons on a 6.77/212.67 to beat Bill Leavitt's 6.78/209. The team did not repair for the semifinal. The team was at Englishtown on July 4 for its FC Spectacular race. Unfortunately, Jake lost to Roy Harris driving the "Frantic Ford" in the opening round. He returned later for a consolation race against Jimmy King, and when King lost fire, he ran a 7.25/207.37 solo. He was back at Englishtown later in the month for an eight-car show. A 7.20/199.11 beat Sam Hagen in round one, but his 7.57/196.50 in the semifinal lost to King's 6.77/212. Jake ran a consolation race against Hagen, and his 7.39/197.36 beat Hagen's 7.67/178 in the "Black Shadow." Near the end of July, Crimmins was at Maple Grove for its All-American FC race. A blown rear end in the first round spoiled his chance of winning. Jake also ran 6.73 at Atco. | Race coverage of Maple Grove's 1st Annual Fall Funny Car Finale in the November 2, 1973 issue of National Dragster. The article mentions that the 6.59/218.44 was Swensen & Lani's best-ever performance. - Tom Nagy |
