Notes: Raymond Beadle was having a tough time at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. It took him three passes to qualify, and his 6.321/242.58 got him the #13 spot. In the first round, he smoked the tires to an 8.07 and lost to John Force. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.91/244.56. He improved to a 5.89/246.57 over Tom McEwen in the first round. In round two, his 6.19/213.77 lost to Frank Hawley's 5.93/241 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." The following week, he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.43/215.82. Beadle beat Billy Meyer and Gary Burgin to gain a final round berth against Kenny Bernstein. In the final, his 6.39/215.97 finished runner-up to Bernstein's 6.21/227. Atlanta held an eight-car show near the end of March, and, unfortunately, Raymond failed to qualify for the show. He was back in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 17. It was another eight-car field, and once again, he failed to qualify with a 6.31 best. Things went better a week later (April 24) at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Beadle qualified #2 with a 5.99 behind Dale Pulde's 5.98 (Low ET). The two worked their way into the final, where Pulde's 6.11 got the victory over the "Blue Max's" 6.20. Raymond got another runner-up finish at the next IHRA event, the World Nationals at Norwalk, where Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car stopped him in the final. Beadle also failed to qualify at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his 6.13/241.93 was far short of the 6.08 it took to make the eight-car field. Oswald got him again at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. Beadle qualified #3, and a solo 6.65/187.89 made it past a broken Al Segrini in round one, but he lost to Oswald in the semifinals. Beadle won his 11th NHRA National event when he won the Springnationals at Columbus. He had set Low ET and a track record 5.88 at 238.64 in qualifying #1 for the field. He then ran 5.97/235.60 over Ken Veney and 6.28/180.36 over a broken Segrini. His opponent, Gary Burgin, smoked the tires in the semifinals, and Raymond's 6.10/228.42 advanced. Once again, he faced Oswald for the title, and his 6.95/238.09 got him the victory over Mark's 6.27/235. He then won the IHRA Northern Nationals at Milan, beating Bernstein in the final. He set Top Speed with his 251.39 pass. The following week (July 17) found the "Blue Max" team at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Beadle qualified #6 with a 5.95/233.76. A quick-leaving 6.14/236.84 beat Paul Smith's quicker 6.10/238 in the opening round, but in round two, the car ruptured an oil pan while staging against Don Prudhomme. The next NHRA race was the Mile High Nationals in Denver. It was an eight-car show, and Beadle's 6.08/238.09 qualified #4. Both he and Force ran 6.22 (Raymond at 239.38) in their first-round race, but Force got to the other end first. Beadle did not race at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, as he chose to race at Spokane instead for the AHRA World Finals that was run the same weekend. It was just an eight-car field, and he qualified #2 behind Force. The two of them would make their way into the final. An easy 6.26/238.72 in the opening round defeated a tire-smoking Gary Densham, and in the semifinal, Raymond's 5.92/241.93 beat Tom McEwen, who also smoked the tires. It looked like Force would that an easy win in the final as he had run 5.79 twice during eliminations. But Beadle picked up to a 5.78/247.93 to win the race over Force's 5.91/220. It had to be upsetting for the "Blue Max" team to be watching the Big Bud Shootout at Indy on September 4 and not being a part of the show. The exclusive eight-car show was held during qualifying and only the top eight qualifiers from the past year ran. But the next day, Beadle's team showed them what they could do. A 5.83/251.39 qualified #3, and Beadle set Low ET in the opening round with his 5.804 at a booming 254.95 that beat Paul Gordon. In round two, his 5.91/245.23 beat Hawley's 6.02/235. But his quicker 5.87/247.93 lost to eventual winner Bernstein's 5.90/254 in the semifinal. The next weekend (September 11), the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. Beadle ran 5.89/250 to qualify low for the eight-car field, and he lasted until the semifinal before Oswald's 5.83/253 put his 5.84/252 on the trailer in a close race. Bristol was his next stop for the IHRA Fallnationals. Beadle ran well again, running 5.84/252.10 to qualify #2 behind Oswald's 5.74/253. This was a critical race for the "Max." Going into this race, Beadle led the IHRA Funny Car points chase by 54 points over Oswald. They both survived their first-round races, but Beadle smoked the tires in the semifinal and lost to Dale Pulde. Oswald went on to win the race and the IHRA Funny Car points Championship. Even with the loss, the "Blue Max" was running some numbers; 5.7's were becoming more and more frequent as well as 250 mph runs. Case in point, at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals on October 2, Beadle's 5.779/251.39 claimed the pole for the eight-car field. He got lucky in the opening round when his crossed-up 6.31/240.64 advanced over Bernstein's troubled 13.13. In the semifinal, he was back on pace with a 5.767/249.30 that defeated Hawley's 5.95/220. He faced Billy Meyer in the final, and the two had a great race that saw Billy's 5.757/245 get the victory over Raymond's 5.78/246.57. Raymond became the 7th member of the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car with a 251.39 pass on July 10, 1983, at IHRA Milan, Michigan.

Notes: Kenny started the year winning at the OCIR Grand Premiere race. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he didn't do quite as well. Bernstein ran 6.342/222.22 to qualify #15, and he beat Dale Pulde in the first round, but he lost to Gary Burgin in round two. Burgin got him at the next NHRA meet as well, the Gatornationals in March. Kenny qualified #10 with a 5.95/241.93, but a first-round 5.94/245.90 lost to Gary's Low ET run of 5.78/238. Things went more Bernstein's way at Darlington the following weekend (March 20) for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.14 and set Low ET with a 6.13. He beat Pulde in a semifinal tire smoker and then met Raymond Beadle's "Blue Max" in the final. Kenny took the win with a 6.21/227.27 over Beadle's 6.39/215. At the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 17 at Atlanta, Kenny's best of 6.08/234.98 (second alternate) failed to qualify for the eight-car show. Yet the following week (April 24), he qualified easily for the eight-car field at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 6.02 qualified #4. Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. He didn't make the finals at the IHRA World Nationals at Norwalk either, but he did set Low ET at 5.88. A 6.02/222.77 qualified #4 in the eight-car field at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Another 6.02 at 242.58 beat Pulde's 6.14/238, but an off-pace 6.26/226.69 in the semifinals lost to the eventual winner Al Segrini's 6.00/241. He followed the NHRA tour to Columbus for the Springnationals at National Trail. Kenny ran a 5.96/246.57 to qualify #4 but slowed to an off pace 6.25/237.46 in the first round, that lost to John Force's 6.01/246. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals but failed to qualify for the eight-car field with a "bump" of 6.01. The rough spell continued, with Bernstein failing to make the show at the NHRA Grandnationals, another eight-car show. Things went much better at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. There he not only qualified, but he made his way into the final before losing to Beadle and taking the runner-up spot. At the NHRA Summernationals, Kenny made the show with a 6.02/245.23 (#11). He beat a tire-smoking Tom Anderson in the first round, before slowing to a 6.14/236 in round two that lost to Rick Johnson's 6.05/240 in the "Custom Body" Omni. He was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals in late July. Kenny qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.05/234.37 in the thin air. He beat Pulde's 6.29/229 in the first round, with a 6.08/237.46. In the semifinals, an off pace 6.33/217.91 lost to the race's eventual winner Frank Hawley in the "Chi-Town Hustler" at 5.97/233. In August, he won over an eight-car field at Bonneville Raceway. He met Force in the final, and his 6.23/227.85 got the victory over John's 6.25/227. Bernstein got his first NHRA win of the year at Brainerd on August 21 for the Northstar Nationals. He ran 5.88/245.23 to qualify #2. In round one, a 5.96/244.56 beat Pulde, and in round two, a 5.97/238 advanced when Ken Veney fouled. He got an easy run in the semifinals when Mark Oswald broke in the "Candies and Hughes" car, but he still ran 5.97/243 for the win. In the final, he was up against Hawley. Kenny gunned him down with a 5.92/246.57 over Frank's 5.96/244. Photo from '83 Cajun Nationals. Longtime Bernstein crewman Mike Guger poses with the Bud King.

Notes: Jim qualified #13 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a 6.23. He lost in the first round. He was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he again qualified #13 with a 6.01/246.57. He lost to Tom McEwen in the first round. Early in May, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Head's 6.02/241 qualified #7. In the opening round, he defeated Eric Caskey's BB/FC with a 6.03/250.00. Raymond Beadle smoked the tires in the "Blue Max" in round two, and Jim advanced with a 6.09/250.69. In the semifinal, his off-pace,6.30/240, fell to eventual winner Billy Meyer's 5.73/252. As mentioned, he did well at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. He qualified #3, and in round one, his 6.02/246 beat Frank Hawley's 6.01/241 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He then beat Al Segrini in the second round with a 5.99/245. In the semifinals, a 6.08/245 beat a tire-smoking Mark Oswald. He faced Billy Meyer in the final, and despite a good 6.01/245.90 run, he lost to Meyer's better 5.92/249. Bristol was his next stop for the IHRA Springnationals. Twenty-five cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen car field, and his 5.98/243 qualified #15. Unfortunately, his 6.07/240.00 in the first round lost to Denny Savage's 5.97/248. At the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan's US 131, Jim ran a 5.77 track record to qualify first in the sixteen-car show. He stayed strong with a first-round 5.78 over Tom Hoover. In round two, a 6.06 beat Don Prudhomme's 6.13. His 6.10 in the semifinal fell to eventual winner Hawley's." He went from top qualifier to the last qualifier when he ran 6.00/247.25 to qualify #16 at the NHRA Springnationals. A first-round 6.07/243.90 lost to Beadle's 5.97/238. Maple Grove hosted the Super Stock Nationals on June 24, and Jim qualified #4 for the eight-car field with a 5.89/249.30. But in round one, he smoked the tires and lost to Bruce Larson. At the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, he qualified #9 with a 5.92/250.00. He failed to reach the finals. The following weekend (July 8), he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Jim was running really well here as his 5.73/257.87 (#4) in qualifying attests. In the first round, his 5.76/250 beat Bob Gottschalk's 6.09/247. He turned some heads in round two, where his 5.68/260.86 beat Tom McEwen's 5.81/235. In the semifinal, he slowed to 5.80/257.87, which lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.81/255. After such a great performance, Englishtown was not so great. His 5.91/250.69 qualified #14 for the NHRA Summernationals, and he lost to Hawley in the first round. Jim surprised everyone by winning the prestigious US Nationals over Kenny Bernstein. His best NHRA times were 5.844 at Brainerd and 255.68 at Indy. Notes: Tom started the season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. The track was poor, and he qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 7.59. In the first round, he lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme when his 7.67/182 fell to the "Snake's" 7.32/229. Hoover qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.349/231.95. A 6.33/220.58 lost to John Lombardo's 6.12/232 in the first round. He attempted to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but his 6.104/236.22 best was good for the second alternate. Those were, however, Tom's best NHRA national event times of the year. Tom also failed to make the show at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where his 6.20/229.00 failed to qualify, but he wasn't alone as this was a tough eight-car show to break into. Kenny Bernstein, Raymond Beadle, Billy Meyer, Gary Burgin, and Dale Pulde were among the "name" drivers that failed to qualify. The following week (April 24), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.12 but lost early. A best of 6.19/230.17 was good for the third alternate at the NHRA Springnationals. Photo from GVRC February 1983.

Notes: 1984 was not Tom's most successful year. He qualified #3 for the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.25 but fouled against Bryan Raines in the first round. He failed to qualify at Pomona (#4 alternate at 6.15/236.84), and things didn't go much better at Gainesville, where he was the sixth alternate at the NHRA Gatornationals with a best of 6.362/233.16. He also missed the field in Atlanta, finishing as the #2 alternate at 6.217/238.09. Early in May, Tom was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 6.53/168 qualified #12. Unfortunately, he lost in the opening round of eliminations. He also lost in the first round, at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships after qualifying #9. Hoover qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a booming 6.057/250.00, but that resulted in a first-round loss to Jim Head, 5.84/254 to 6.98/138. Indy also was disappointing as he failed to qualify for the NHRA US Nationals with a #5 alternate 6.070/239.36 effort. That was Tom's last NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: Miller was the second alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.28/226.18 best. He also failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 6.14/234.98 best was the first alternate. He attempted to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but it was a tough eight-car show, and he failed to qualify. He made the field at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where a 6.25/232.55 qualified #14. In round one, he upset Billy Meyer's 6.47/238 with a 6.40/222. In round two, Miller's 6.61/192.71 fell to John Collins' 6.31/215. On June 27, Fuzz was at Sacramento for the NHRA Western Regional, but his 6.67/207.37 best was good for the second alternate for the eight-car field. A 6.42/225.56 qualified him on the "bump" for the eight-car field at the NHRA Mile High Nationals on July 4. He improved to 6.34/229.00 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Billy Meyer's 6.28/231. Fuzz qualified on the "bump" with a 6.20/234.98 at the NHRA Summernationals. He advanced past the first-round with a 6.35/226.13 when Meyer smoked his tires and lost. In the second round, he ran a 6.32/224.43 but lost to Dale Armstrong's 6.14/229. On July 26, he was in Atlanta International Raceway for the NHRA's fourth Eastern Regional. He qualified #5 with a 6.35/225.08, but in round one, he ran an even better 6.28/228.49 but lost to Tom Anderson's holeshot aided 6.31/226. At the next Eastern Regional race on August 2 at Maple Grove, he qualified #2 with a 6.11/236.84 and made it into the final before losing to Gary Burgin's 6.02/239 with a 6.19/234.37. The following week (August 9), he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Miller qualified #6 with a 6.20/233.16, but in round one, a 6.41/227.84 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.23/230 in the "Blue Max." Miller's next stop was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Eastern Regional. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.30/235.60 (Top Speed), but an off-pace 6.63/190.67 lost to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein's 6.35/219 in the opening round. A strong 6.06 qualified #14 for the NHRA US Nationals. He beat Gary Burgin and a motor-blowing Don Prudhomme in the first two rounds of eliminations before losing to Jim Dunn in the semifinal. His next stop was at Houston International for the final NHRA Western Regional race. Only five cars showed for what was supposed to be an eight-car field, and Fuzz ran 6.26/227.84 for the pope position. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the opening round and ran 6.33/228.00. But he lost a close one to Bernstein in the semifinal that saw his 6.28/229.59 (Top Speed) lose to Kenny's 6.25/218. Fuzz had a great year in 1981, qualifying at will at NHRA national events and hitting several nice 6.0 passes.

Notes: The team ran the AHRA circuit this year. They definitely ran at the AHRA GrandNationals in Ohio, where the freshly mounted 1979 Trans Am body was still in primer. The team did not run any NHRA national events this year. The car was sold to Ronny Young & Terry Darby, becoming the Shock Wave.

Notes: Photo from 1982 Green Valley WWCS meet. Car began life as the Cheetah, then was sold to the Edstroms and became the Blind Faith. The Edstroms sold it to Jon Reich. | Carl was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.24/234.98 was good for the fifth alternate spot.

Notes: Photo from 83 AHRA Grand Nationals, Dragway 42. West started the season at the AHRA Winternationals where a 6.98 qualified third. He lost to Tom McEwen in the first round. A 6.73 qualified fourth at the AHRA Springnationals on May 2 at Tulsa, but again McEwen did him in, this time in the semifinal where a 7.63 dropped to Tom's 6.18 (Low ET). At the AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis, a 6.43/212.27 qualified seventh, but Mike Dunn beat him with a 6.14 in the first round. On August 1 he competed at the AHRA Summernationals at Kansas City where he qualified sixth with a 6.30 at only 183.29, but he lost a blower belt in the first round, next to Don Prudhomme. At the AHRA World Finals, he beat a tire-smoking Henry Harrison in the first round, with a 6.04/233.76 before losing to John Force in the semifinals when his 6.29 paled in comparison to Force's 5.79. | Johnny perfected doing a burnout & dry hop on alky and then staging and running on nitro. | I was a huge draw with this setup. It helped me save money, but mostly helped promoters book me as the little guy taking on the big guys. It led to a lot of bookings. Plan A name came from Johnny and Jim West saying they would race a fuel altered, funny car, and top fuel car - Plan A, B, and C. - Johnny West, Draglist LIVE, 2/3/20

Notes: West started his season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the eight-car show. West ran match races at Green Valley in February and March. He ran 6.17/230 to qualify #5 for the eight-car show at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. He lost to eventual winner Ron Correnti in the opening round. Photo from February 1984 Green Valley.

Notes: Second alternate at Pomona with a 6.424/225.56. Johnny was a DNQ at Gainesville, too, with an improved 6.360/224.43. He also failed to qualify at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he had problems and could only run a best of 8.548/88.14. That was John's last NHRA national event of the year.
