Notes: Prior to his Willys and Anglia days, Loper won the E/Gas class at the 1959 Nationals, making the long haul from Phoenix to Detroit with his '59 Chevy Impala in tow. He turned 14.94 at 93.45 mph. - RT | Loper ran principally at two Arizona tracks in '59: Chandler Associated Drag Strip and the old Luke Auxiliary Field Number 3, then called Phoenix Associated Drag Strip. On Feb. 22 at Chandler, he took an E/G class win with 14.97 at a new track record speed of 93.94 mph. On Mar. 7 at Luke Field Associated Drag Strip, he set a new track speed mark with 95.89 mph. Back at Chandler on Mar. 22, he took a class win with 14.80 at a quick 96.47 mph. At the Luke Field strip on May 3, he ran 92.00 mph. On May 24 at Chandler, he ran 15.05 at 90.00 mph for another E/G class win. At Chandler on June 27, he took a class win with 14.95 at 94.45 mph. He finished the season at the Luke Field strip, winning E/G with an impressive 14.38 at 94.73 mph. Two months later, he dropped down into D/G for a class and got a Little Eliminator win at Luke Field with 14.26 at 97.29 mph. Photo: "Just curious (Phx. Notes: Their injected Chev-Willys lost to Larry Teter's '32 Vicky in the C/G finals at Indy. Added a blower and moved to C/GS for 1962. - RT | In the '61 season, they primarily ran at Mel Larson's Phoenix Associated Drag Strip, the old Luke Auxiliary Field No. 3. They ran in C/G until the end of the season when they bumped up to B/G. Notes: G. W. Ross had dreamed of making a twin-engine car for twenty years. With the help of his son, George, he did. The engines were connected by a double U-joint and were expected to produce 320 HP. The frame was lengthened by only a foot to accommodate the two engines. But they had to combine 3 '36 Ford hoods to cover the engine compartment. A second transmission turned backward was positioned in front of the rear-end housing. Photo: "Just curious (Phx. Notes: West and Bloom's first try at turning this '47 Crosley into a drag race car was disappointing. They used the rear half of a straight Buick 8, making it a four-cylinder "power" plant. When they could only eke 75 mph out of it, they swapped the little motor out for a 1940 Buick Century. They also moved the driver from the front seat to the rear seat to accommodate the bigger motor. This change really improved their results: 104.34 mph. Photo: "Just curious (Phx. Hist.), p. 16, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. -- MB |

Notes: By the end of the season, Sandy had set track records in A/G, B/G, A/A, and B fuel coupe classes at Perryville. He was all over the map. He started the year running in B/G, taking class wins on Feb. 6 (86.90 mph), May 1 (91.84 mph), setting a track record on June 5 (96.77 mph), and breaking the record again on July 3 (98.90 mph). Then he towed to Paradise Mesa for the 2-day Pacific Southwest Championship race with fellow Phoenix racers Carl Grimes and Bill Hopper on July 9/10. He got runner-up to Cooper-Ferre-Wayland in B/G, turning 98.63 mph. After that, he began experimenting with fuel and different setups in other classes back in Arizona. On Aug. 7 at Perryville, he set a B fuel coupe mark with 94.75 mph. He also ran in A/G and set the track record with 96.77 mph. On Oct. 30, he won the Blakely Trophy with a new track record in A/A at 101.42 mph. He teamed up with Harnack to run his coupe in B/A on Nov. 20, turning 99.22 mph. Photo: Just Curious (Phx.
