Notes: Leal's first flopper: Hilborn-injected late hemi, TorqueFlite, Logghe chassis combo. Leal was leery of blowers. Butch ran this Logghe-built Barracuda in '67. B&N Fiberglass made the body. A stock stroke and bore 426 Hemi powered the car. He and crew chief Jack Smith built and maintained the engine. M/T supplied the rods and pistons while an Isky cam was used. The Hilborn injectors fed the 90% nitro mix to the engine. The transmission was a TorqueFlite built by Art Carr. This was one of the strongest unblown FCs in '67. Leal was at Fremont on April 2 for a best-of-three-match race against Mark Bloom, who was driving the "Bloomin' Bullet" Camaro. Leal won two straight with times of 9.51/165.13 and 8.59/170.77. Mark's best was 9.63. A week later (April 8), he was at Riverside for the HRM Championships. There were two classes of FCs run, and he was in the 2,000 lb. class. Leal's 8.92/168.50 qualified #2 behind Jack Chrisman's 8.71/177. In the opening round, his 8.87/170.45 beat Steve Bovan. He reached the final to face Chrisman's Comet, but the 'Cuda broke and could not run, so Jack soloed for the money. Shortly after, he was at Gary, Indiana's US 30, for a four-car event. In his first race, Butch's 8.45/166.67 beat Roger Lindamood. In his next race, he ran Dean Nicopolis in the "Hemi Hunter" Camaro. Dean watched as Leal pulled away from him and won easily with an 8.28/178.27. There was talk about Leal being able to mount a challenge to the dominating Comets of "Dyno" Don Nicholson and "Fast Eddie" Schartman. On May 7, he was in Minneapolis, where he raced Dick Loehr. He won two straight with times of 10.30/113.92 and 9.44/173.07 on the cold track. The two strongest Plymouth FCs locked horns for a best-of-three match race at Lions on July 8. Fred Goeske's "Hemi-'Cuda" had been laying down big MPH numbers for quite a while before Leal brought out his flip-ton car, so this would be a big match. Leal was more than up to the task as he won three straight with times of 8.03/171.75 (over Fred's 8.31/186),8.04/169.17, over Fred's 8.36 at a crazy 187.88, and another 8.03. On August 12, Leal was at Lions for a best-of-three match against Doug Thorley's new Corvair. The Chevy was supercharged and, as we know, would later prove to be a strong contender by winning the NHRA Nationals. But at this event, the hatchback stopped the Corvair two straight with times of 8.08/173.74 and 8.07. Doug's times were 8.21/184 and 8.10/181. On September 9, Butch went up against Don Gay at OCIR. Gay was debuting his new Firebird, so new car blues held back its performance to an 8.95 best, while Leal won all three races with times of 8.15/166.97, 8.14/174.08, and 8.08/173.07. He was back at OCIR later in the month for another best of three, this time against Gas Ronda's new Mustang. Ronda had just driven the car to some shake-down runs before their match but still ran a best of 8.38. But there was no stopping Leal as he went undefeated again, winning all three races with a best of 8.08/176.81. Leal campaigned the car until the end of the year and was having a new car built for the '68 season, but he saw the future of FC and realized that a blower was needed to stay competitive. He wasn't willing to go that route as he saw way too many blower explosions. This was 1967's quickest and fastest injected funny car at 7.82/181.90 (per Butch's website). He also ran 8.03/177.71 somewhere and 8.22/176.47 at the OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67. - Danny White | The car was featured in the 12/67 issue of Drag Strip. - RT; Photo: Hot Rod Archive Series, no. 6, Hemi Power (Winter 2007), p. 32 -MB |

Notes: Took Top Gas (AA/GD) trophy at the June 1970 Springnationals (Dallas). Qualified at 7.49; the final run was 7.57/201.70. - RT | The 7.08/212.26 times from this twice-motored car were registered early in Top Gas eliminations at Indy. With many anticipating the first six-second run on gas, Motes' opportunity disappeared when a between-rounds engine thrash left a magneto accidentally installed backward. Jack "Mr. Leave" Jones took the eventual class win. - RT | Number two qualifier at Ontario 11/21/70 at 7.396/204.08. | 1970 NHRA Top Gas world champ. | Ray showed up in R.C. Williams's car at Cornhusker Raceway on May 31. Rain interrupted the race, but not before Moats had made two runs, one at 203.61 and the other at 201.79. At this time, the AA/D record was 200.67 & 204.54.; Photo: Hot Rod Archive Series, no. 6, Hemi Power (Winter 2007), p. 22 - MB |

Notes: Leroy went 7.066/219.50 to qualify #7 at the Pomona Winternationals. He lost to Ron Rolstad in round one on a holeshot, 7.28/187 to 7.271/216.34. Goldstein was at OCIR on March 3 for the PDA Championships. He lost early in eliminations. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #8 in the 32 car field with a 7.01. In the opening round, his .23/205.46 defeated Pat Foster's 7.70/196. In round two, he used a 7.01/205.46 to eliminate Frank Martinez's 7.26/199. Goldstein had a coasting contest with Bennie Osborn in the third round when both shut-off. Leroy crossed the stripe first. He caught a good light in the semifinal, and his 7.15 beat hometown favorites James Warren's 7.12. The final was between him and Ron Rivero driving the "K & G Speed" car. Unfortunately, the "Weinerschnitzel" failed to fire, and Rivero soloed for the title. On April 6, he was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show. He downed the Chevy-powered car of Bob Brooks in the opening round with a 7.40.26 but lost in the following round. Soon after, Fresno held a twelve-car show, and Leroy qualified #4 with a 7.23. But in the opening round, he fouled and shut down to 10.96/81.81 in a loss to Dan Madigan. The Texas Pro Fuel Circuit ran at Green Valley Raceway on May 11, and Goldstein qualified #3 for the eight-car field with a 7.47/175.09. He lost fire against the "Northwind" in the first round. He went to Tulsa for another Texas Pro Fuel Circuit race the next day. Thirty-four cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Leroy qualified easily and lasted until round two, where he fouled against eventual winner Vic Brown driving the "Creitz & Greer" car. On June 1, Amarillo held a Texas vs. California race. All eight cars there were to make three runs each. In the first race, Goldstein's off-pace 8.32/104.80 lost to Larry Brown's 7.64/210 in the "Chaos Kids" car. In his second race, a 7.29/221.26 beat Gary Bailey's 7.54/207. Another off-pace 8.24/124.18 lost to Dwight Salisbury's 7.77/168 in the "Beach Boys" car in round three. It looked like he was on the way to winning the AHRA Springnationals. In the semifinal, he got to solo when Chris Karamesines lost fire. Then the other two semifinalists were both eliminated when Vic Brown fouled, and Don Cook crossed the centerline. So Karamesines was brought back into the show on the "break rule," and the two lined up again. This time for the title. But Leroy's clutch went away, and the "Greek" ran 7.02/216 for the victory. #2 qualifier at Indy 1968 at 6.715/219.50 and made it three rounds. Also 7.014 at Bakersfield March Meet 68. Confirmed 6.90 Green Valley. The team was based in San Diego and featured Leroy and Jim Nicoll. Did Jim own the team?; Photo: Hot Rod Archive Series, no. 6, Hemi Power (Winter 2007), p. 22 - MB |

Notes: Car dealer Harry Baker bought this '64 440 from George Cutler in Nov. '64 after it took a class win at the US Nationals. He got Jim Hall to do the driving until Hall left his employment in April. After that, his 17-year-old son, Tim, took over driving duties.
