Notes: Barney Navarro built this 500 HP Chrysler-engined fuel dragster. It took about two months for Gandall to sort out the problems before getting in a decent run. On May 12, he set a new island Top Speed record of 134.32 mph, taking Top Eliminator and Dragster class win at Kahuku. On May 26, he got the meet's Top Speed at 125 mph. At the island's 2-day race on July 4 and July 7, he ran decent numbers (10.23 and 136.36 mph), but he was outclassed by the state-side dragsters of Ed Cortopassi (Glass Slipper), Emory Cook, and Maurice Richer. Photo: Honolulu Star-Bulletin, Apr. 13, 1957 - MB | He and two or three other shipped-in cars ran at Kahuku Air Base - the big drag strip in Hawaii. Four days - July 4 through July 7, 1957 - Thursday through Sunday - 1st annual Hawaii Summer Invitational drag racing championships. Emery Cook's first run was 9.19/157.89 in front of 4,000 people on Thursday. Richer in Nesbit Car 9.49/153.84, Cortopassi Glass Slipper ran 9.84/142.38, then local guy Longie Gandall ran 10.33/136. Second day - Bruce Geisler - sports car day two - Fred Watanabe - motorcycle - promoter Jimmy Sujiyama. - Bret Kepner (we need to confirm if it was 10.33 or 10.23).
