Notes: Car was originally named "Rollin Thunder", but someone else on i believe the left coast was using that moniker, so the name eventually became the "Thunderin "Okie. " Suburban in the background was still in dads possession until just a couple of years ago, the pushbar is still under the bench, and the "Okie from Muskogee license plate is on the back of his current race car trailer, thats dad bent over the motor, mom sittin in the passenger side of the burban, don't know who the other person is. I probably had a pocket full of hot wheels, and was playin in a mud hole somewhere. |

Notes: Bill was at Green Valley Raceway on April 10 for the third NHRA Division Four race. His 6.96/200.44 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field. Unfortunately, the run came at a price as he hurt the engine and could not run eliminations. James Brown took his place in the field. Wendt ran the WWCS Amarillo race in May. Wendt ran 7.29/200.65 in qualifying and 7.22/197.71 losing in the first round. At the AHRA Grandnationals, Bill ran 7.97/133.53 for the bump spot. Wendt fell to Dal Denton 6.80/201.73 to 7.89 118.28. Former War Eagle, Bandit, and Double Trouble. | My only non Mo- Par body. Yep I crashed Smokey Bear and had a match race 2 weeks later at San Angelo. The car was totaled but I knew that the former war Eagle was for sale. On Monday I drove and picked up the car and had a Smokey Bear race ready in two weeks - Bill Wendt |

Notes: Dick qualified #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.80/242.58. He beat Dick Phillips in the first round, with a 5.73/238.95, but another 5.73 at 240.89 lost to Don Garlits' 5.50/262 in the second round. Things went LaHaie's way at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he used a 5.63/244.56 to qualify #4. He beat an off-pace George Tolon with a 5.72/247.93, and in the second round, he improved to 5.62/252.50 over Connie Kalitta. Dick cut a good light in the semifinals, where his 5.70/250.00 held off Gary Ormsby's quicker 5.57/259. This put LaHaie into the final against Joe Amato. It was a close race, but Dick got the win light with a 5.65/248.69, beating Joe's 5.69/243. The next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Qualifying was challenging as it was an eight-car show with seventeen cars attempting to qualify. Dick made the show with a 5.65/249.85 that put him in the #5 spot in the field. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Garlits. LaHaie ran well in their match, but his 5.75/249.03 finished second best to Don's 5.62/261. He then made a stop at Tulsa for the ADRA Springnationals, where he won over an eight-car field. He beat Chris Karamesines in the final with a 5.87 Low ET of the meet. LaHaie then went to Alamo Dragway for another eight-car show on May 19. He qualified #1 with a 5.86/238.09 and another 5.86 at 226.70 in the first round beat Bruce Burleson. He picked up slightly to 5.83/236.84 in the semifinals to beat a tire-smoking Karamesines. He got Low ET of the meet with a final round victory over Buddy Warren with a 5.75/223.32. With all his success, it was surprising that the following week (May 26), he failed to qualify at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His best of 5.78/240.00 was good for the first alternate. Dick made up for his non-qualifier by running a career-best (to this point) 5.59/253.52 to qualify #2 behind Amato's 5.58 at the NHRA Springnationals. He had some tough competition here as his first-round 5.65/251.81 beat Frank Bradley's 5.73/246. In round two, a 5.66/253.52 beat Darrell Gwynn's 5.69/216. Even his semifinal 5.66/251.81 was good, but he lost to a quick-leaving Bill Mullins, who won with a 5.71/258. LaHaie then followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with his 5.62/259.36, and in the opening round, his slightly better 5.60/259.96 fell to eventual winner Garlits' 5.54/260. Dick ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.470 at 259.36 to qualify #2 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals behind Garlits' 5.43/260. In round one, he beat Dan Pastorini before his 5.62/250.83 lost to Darrell Gwynn's 5.59/253 in a very close race. He then went to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but his 5.83/233.16 failed to qualify for the eight-car show (second alternate). He did not compete at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals as he blew an engine at Kansas City on the Wednesday before the race. He had lots of trouble keeping all eight cylinders lit at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. All three of his qualifying passes came on seven cylinders. He ran 5.67, 5.61, and a 5.60/255.24 that put him into the show in the #6 spot. In the first round, his 5.64/247.66 defeated Pastorini's 5.73/241. In round two, his 5.70/251.25 lost to Gary Ormsby's 5.63/256. Even his two runs in eliminations came on seven cylinders. Dick must have gotten things straightened out by the time he got to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He broke 260 for the first time when he ran 5.51/260.26 and 5.54/261.17 in qualifying. The 5.51 placed him #6 in the eight-car field. In the opening round, a troubled, shut-off 8.37/87.09 lost to Gwynn's 5.60/232. Dick ran 5.51/259 at ADRA Kansas City. |

Notes: The team raced Division 4 races and AHRA National events. The car was built on a Pinto jig by Don Hardy. Hilger qualified #5 at Green Valley Raceway for the NHRA Division Four race on April 16, with an 8.96. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Lee Shepherd. Kenny tried hard in their race, but his 9.02/148.76 was no match for the Camaro's 8.63/155. Kenny was at Tulsa early in May for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 9.16/147.29. In the first round, his 9.10/149.50 lost to eventual winner Sonny Bryant's 8.79/153. In June, he was at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio for the AHRA Nationals. A 9.10/145 qualified #6, but he shut off to 10.18 in the opening round against Jerry Janke. They also ran 9.13 at AHRA West Salem, OH, 1978. |

Notes: Smith ran two Monzas this year. The Wilson-Franklin-Greer car ran at the Gators and IHRA Miami. Smith was driving the "Entertainer" on May 9 at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One opener. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field and faced low qualifier Dodger Glenn in the first round. Smith had problems and shut down at 8.42, while Dodger advanced with a 6.32. Shortly after that, he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. This was another eight-car field, and once again, he qualified #5. This time, Jake Crimmins had qualified #1, and in their first-round race, Smith's 6.49/215.31 lost a close one to Crimmins' 6.48/214. He was at Houston for an eight-car show at the end of May. He qualified #2, making it into the final only to foul against Johnny White. Paul qualified #15 at Columbus at 6.625/207.85. He beat Ed McCullouch in round one, 6.656/196.00 to 11.63, but he lost to Shirl Greer in round two, 6.94/229 to 7.702/158.00. Paul did a huge wheelstand at Englishtown after qualifying #12 at 6.556/206.89. He could not return for the first round. Paul was the 7th alternate at Indy at 6.500/187.89. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. We need to confirm the 6.19/229.59 times. |
