Notes: Garlits was at Tucson Dragway in mid-January for the AHRA Winternationals. He dominated the event. He started by setting a track record 5.85 to qualify low for the eight-car field. In eliminations, no one else ran in the five-second zone. In the first round, he beat Frank Bradley with a 5.94/240.00. He then reset both ends of the track record in the semi-final with a 5.79/247.24 that easily covered Dick Lahaie's 6.15. In the final, he faced the second qualifier, Shirley Muldowney, and she fouled while Don ran 5.94/240.64 for the victory. He did not race at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he was at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 5.78/247.25 qualified #5. In the opening round, his 6.02/244.56 beat Lucille Lee's 6.44/221. He improved to 5.72/249 in round two to defeat Johnny Abbott, and a semi-final 5.94/234.37 dropped Jim Barnard's 6.02/231. He faced Muldowney in the final, and this time her 5.82/240 beat Don's 6.18/231.95 runner-up effort. Shortly after, he qualified #7 for the Bakersfield March Meet with a 5.88/247.93. But he was gone after the first round as his tire-shaking 6.59 lost to Bradley's 6.19. He was at Green Valley Raceway for the NHRA Division Four race in April. He ran well, dropping Keith Craig in the semi-final with a 5.90/230.76, but a final round 6.04/235.60 lost to Gene Snow's 5.80/240. Another win came his way in the first week of May at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. There, his 6.44 qualified second to Jerry Ruth's 6.39. These two would work their way into the final. Garlits ran a much-improved 6.26/225.56 in the first round over Muldowney's 6.30/234. He had a close race with Bradley in the semi-final that saw Don's 6.24/237.46 (Top Speed) beat Bradley's 6.25/230. In the final, Ruth slowed to 6.65/189 while Garlits ran 6.17/237.46 for the win. High gear only car. The car weighed only 1353 lbs. On 7/11/82, Don became the first in the AHRA to go 260 mph at Gary, Indiana. he also went 255.54 mph. Don only raced one NHRA event in 1982, the Gatornationals, where he was runner-up to Shirley Muldowney. His best times at the event were 5.724/249.30. We list those as his best times of the year as the Gary speed clocks were often invalid.

Notes: Karamesines was at Fremont for its East/West meet early in the year. While he didn't reach the final, he set Low ET at 5.85 in a field that included Don Garlits and Jerry Ruth. In May, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified second behind Garlits and just ahead of Shirley Muldowney. He lasted until the final, where he finished runner-up to "Big Daddy." In June, he also raced at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, but his 6.79/207.38 in the opening round fell to Fred Snavely's 6.73/192. Chris did not race at any NHRA national events this year.

Notes: Chris ran well in '85. He was at Pomona for the Winternationals, where he ran 5.82/218.55 to qualify #9. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Larry Minor which Chris lost. The next event was the Gatornationals, and once again, he qualified well. A 5.64/226.69 qualified #6, but he slipped to a 6.18/234 in the first round, that lost to Frank Bradley's 5.84/251. Karamesines attempted to qualify in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, but his best of 5.81/242.06 left him the third alternate for the eight-car show. He did better at the Springnationals, qualifying #11 with a 5.74/246.84, but his parachute deployed during his first-round race against Gary Beck. He ran 5.653/240.64 in a round one win over Ron Smith at ADRA Spokane. Did Chris run 5.62/250.65 somewhere this year (ADRA)? The best NHRA times were 5.648 at Gainesville (#6 qualifier) and 246.84 at Columbus.

Notes: Duplicated his 240.64 best speed at the NHRA World Finals. | Jerry "The King" Ruth lived up nationwide to his nickname into the 80s, when he designed the "Swindhahl F-86," followed by Terry Capp/Bernie. In an online interview, Ruth explains the still-influential chassis designed for launching faster from static to dynamic weight. R/U to Bruins/Markley at the car's 5/80 WWCS SIR debut. Ruth and Lee Beard also won the Mile-Highs that year. Went to the 2nd round of the Fallnationals when the blower exploded against Allen. YouTube. I was at the '80 Falls, seeing Ruth go rounds, and AA/Dale's Billy-Meyer-Motor-assisted Final against the Blue Max. Belching sheets of fire, sounded very different. I got a picture card that day, and close up on the body, smaller lettering said, "The Amazing" Speed Racer. - Joe Moore

Notes: Smart qualified #10 at the NHRA Winternationals at 5.945/243.90. A first-round 5.99/210 lost to Dave Settles' 5.90/242.58. At the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals, a career-best of 5.749/247.25, qualified #3. In the first round, a 5.814/245.23 just nipped Dick LaHaie's 5.92/234. In the second round, he upset Richard Tharp with a 5.875/245.90, beating the Candies and Hughes driver's 5.91/243. A 5.937/239.99 beat Butch Osmon's 6.01/239 in the Jim and Allison Lee car in the semifinal. In the final, he met Shirley Muldowney, and his good 5.896/245.23 still lost to the lady's 5.81/247. He went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals on March 22 and qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 5.92 (Low ET) at 243. A first-round 5.98/238 beat Mark Oswald (6.14/230), and in the semis, a 6.05/243 beat Jeb Allen (6.39/209). He broke in the final against Richard Tharp, resulting in another runner-up finish. In April, he raced at Green Valley for the NHRA Western Regional points race. A 6.80/231.36 qualified #5 in the eight-car show and a tire-smoking 6.38/233.76 loss to Muldowney in the first round, gave Smart nothing more than Top Speed of the meet. It was on to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where again he set Top Speed of the meet at 243.90 at 5.829 in qualifying #3. He got past the first-round with a 5.847/241.93 to beat Frank Bradley's 5.94/236, but he broke against Terry Capp in the semifinal. On May 3, he set Low ET at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am race. A first-round 5.77/247.25 got the mark in a win over Osmon (6.07/231). In the semifinal, a quicker 5.87/243.90 lost to Oswald's 5.92/242. He ran at Bristol on May 17 for the IHRA Springnationals, where his 5.90/245.23 just made the bump in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he hurt some parts and could not run, allowing alternate Mike Tarter into the show. Later in May, at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, he qualified #5 in the eight-car field at 5.890/246.57 and beat low qualifier David Pace in the first round, with a 5.91/243.90. In the semis, he smoked the tires to a 6.11/245.23 and lost to Capp's 6.06/237. He again ran well at the NHRA Springnationals, where a 5.884/242.58 qualified #2, but Osmon put him on the trailer in the first round, with a slight holeshot aided 6.124/229.9 to his 6.115/230.17. The race was a theoretical dead heat - .000 seconds! Jody qualified #3 at Englishtown with a 5.781/248.61. In round one, he beat Shirley Muldowney, 5.822/245.23 to 5.882/234.24, but lost to Gary Beck in round two, 5.80/238 to 5.945/243.24. He was the first alternate at the Molson Grandnationals at 5.919/241.93. At Indy, he set a personal best elapsed time with a #7 qualifying 5.738 at 247.25. Billy Williams upset him in round one, however, 5.89/243 to 5.956/246.57. He qualified #7 at Fremont as well, hitting 5.771/242.58. In round one, he beat Doug Kerhulas, 5.79/245.90 to 5.84/241, but broke against Jeb Allen in round two. Jody just missed the field at the NHRA World Finals. His 5.914/243.24 was the second alternate. Where did Smart run 249.30?

Notes: Steve Stephens and Dick Venables had Ed Mabry build them this 215" wheelbase car for '72. Buddy Warren did the bodywork. It ran a Donovan 417 that was overbored .110" to give it a displacement of 428. The stock-stroke crank came from Velasco. Howards rods held Brooks pistons in place, and the cam was also from Howards. Donovan ported and polished the steel '58 Hemi heads that used Donovan 2" stainless steel valves. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold, and Marc Danekas reworked the GMC 6/71. Up top sat an Enderle injection unit. The transmission was a Lenco-two speed that fed the power back to a Mopar rear with 4.10 gears. The overall weight of the car was 1,370 lbs. The dragster was gold, red, orange, and blue, sprayed on by Brian Hildebrand. An interesting helper on the crew was 18 year old Rahn Tobler. We need confirmation of the 224 mph run. Ran confirmed 6.468/221.13 at Tulsa PRA National Challenge. The team also ran 6.53 at LaPlace. They ran a funny car, too.

Notes: The team had a great year on the NHRA national event trail in 1980. Ran 6.16/234.37 third alternate at Gainesville. Ran 5.970/243.24 #5 qualifier at Baton Rouge, losing to Jeb Allen in round one, 5.95/240 to 6.15/235.60. Ran #10 qualifier at Columbus with a 6.02/236.22, and he beat Marvin Graham in round one, with a 6.25/209.79. Steve then took out Gary Beck in round two, 6.19/203 to 6.25/219. Larry Brown finally ended Steve's day in the semis, 6.21/234.98 to 6.39/221. It was a nice showing. Steve qualified #17 at Indy with his best times of the year, 5.940/244.56. But #1 qualifier Marvin Graham got some revenge for the Columbus first-round loss to Steve, 5.94/245.90 to 6.03/241.28. Steve ended the year at the Ontario World FInals, qualifying #12 at 6.00/239.36. He fell to Johnny Abbott in round one, 5.91/238 to 6.22/230.76. A solid year on the NHRA trail!

Notes: Qualified first at the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson with a 6.17. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Ron Attebury. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 5.988/243.24 qualified #5. He was upset in the first round, by Ron Correnti, 6.17 to a shut off 8.71. Shortly after this, John sold his dragster and equipment to Rick Ramsey and he retired from racing. Did John run a 5.95 at Orange County this year? Removing that until we get confirmation.
