Notes: Number 3 qualifier at Indy 82 at 7.784 and then runner up to Frank Iaconio at Indy, 7.803 to 7.809. #3 qualifier at first 500-inch pro stock race at the Winters, 7.899/174.08. This car was being built by Don Hardy with the intent to run a 351 Cleveland motor. When NHRA switched to the 500 ci rules format, Ford wanted Bob to run the EXP anyway. Glidden had to shove a Boss 429 into the little 92" wheelbase car and hope for the best. He stated after he retired that it was the worst car he ever drove and that it handled like a fuel altered. Even with his limited experience with the 429 (he had tried a small cubic inch Boss motor in testing in '81) he managed to qualify #3 at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals with a 7.89/174.08. He stayed in the sevens during eliminations, running a 7.94/172.74 over Don Campanello in the first round, and a 7.95/173.41 over Jim Meyer in round two, but going up against Lee Shepherd in the semifinals, Bob fouled. The Gatornationals showed how far behind the Glidden's were with the little car. His mph readings were great, third highest in qualifying at 174.41. But the car wouldn't ET. His 7.97 qualified #9 in the field setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Shepherd. In that race, Bob's 8.09/171.75 finished second to Lee's 7.86/175. Things went slightly better in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Glidden's 8.03/174 got past a fouling Frank Iaconio in the first round, and in the semifinal, a 7.89/173 beat Joe Lepone's 8.00/170 in Bill Jenkins' Camaro. The EXP was in its first final round appearance, but an 8.02/174.41 performance gave Bob a runner-up finish to Shepherd's 7.81/174. A 7.90 qualified #3 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He beat Andy Mannarino in the first round, but facing Shepherd in the semifinal Bob fouled out. Somehow the car got down the track straight in four runs to win the NHRA Springnationals. This was Bob's only NHRA win of '82. He qualified #2 with a 7.82/175.43. He had a little luck in the semifinals when Warren Johnson fouled away a 7.96 to Glidden's 8.01. But in the final, he met Shepherd again. This time Bob outran the Texas Camaro with a 7.92/170.77 to Lee's 7.93/172. He got another runner-up finish to Shepherd at the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver. An 8.31 qualified #2 and in the first round, an 8.35/162.45 beat Bubba Corzine. In the semifinals, he beat Don Coonce, but his final round 8.30/156.79 lost to Lee's 8.27/164. Glidden made it as far as the semifinals at the NHRA Grandnationals. There he lost a 7.84 to 7.85 decision to WJ. At the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, a 7.83/177.86 (Top Speed) qualified #2. He ran a 7.94 in the first round, over Mannarino, but an off pace 8.10/154 lost in round two to Lepone. In August, he was at US 131 for the PHR Championships. He ran a 7.83/172.74 to qualify #3. In the first round, a 7.85/173.41 beat Lepone's 7.99/169. But in the semifinals, once again his nemesis Shepherd downed him with a 7.85/174 over Bob's 7.94/173.07. He got his first pole of the year at the next NHRA event, the Northstar Nationals. Bob ran 7.87 (Low ET) at 174.75 to get the spot. Unfortunately, in the first round, both he and Iaconio ran 7.92 with Frank getting the win at 168 mph over Glidden's hard-charging 174.08. At Indy for the US Nationals, the EXP dipped into the 7.7's for the first time, qualifying #3 with a 7.78. Bob made it into yet another final (his fourth of the year), but this time it wasn't against Shepherd. Iaconio had taken Lee out in the semifinal, so it was Frank facing off against Bob this time. Both ran 7.80's in the final, with the EXP hitting 175.78 to the Camaro's 173. But Iaconio got the win and Bob had to settle for another runner-up spot. Bob qualified third in the eight-car field at Fremont with a best-ever 7.680 at 178.92 for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals on October 3. He beat Lepone's 7.85/172 in the first round, with a 7.70/178.21. In the semifinals, he lost to Shepherd.

Notes: Set national record twice in 1988: 7.319 at Seafair Nats, then 7.277 at Super Nats. Photo from Milan, Mich. -1988. Also 7.318 at IHRA Ennis. | Just heard of Glidden's passing (December 2017). It's hard to believe. Because of him, I became interested in drag racing. He was an amazing, hard-working individual. So, I had to do a Glidden entry. After a great '87 season, Bob followed it up with another championship in '88. The season didn't start the best at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. It started OK when he set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.39/189.27, but he was upset by Morris Johnson Jr. in the first round. He then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where his 7.37/188.67 qualified #1. A first-round 7.39/187 beat a fouling Carlos Gonzalez, and a 7.45/187 in round two beat Terry Adams. He moved into the final by running a 7.42/187 in the semifinals to beat Tim Nabors. In the final, he was up against the Ford mountain motor of Rickie Smith. The two Motorcraft-backed T-Birds had a good battle, but Smith's 7.39/190 came out on top over Bob's 7.43/185.56. At the IHRA Supernationals, he qualified #4 and ran 7.47 and 7.56 to meet Smith in the semifinals. Once again, Rickie had Bob's number as his 7.41/189 beat Glidden's 7.49/187. He had more bad luck at the next NHRA race, the Gatornationals, where he only qualified #11 with a 7.40/189.31. Bob smoked the tires in the first round, and shut down to a 7.67/177 loss to Kenny Delco. He qualified #1 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 7.47 (Low ET). Bob lasted until the second round before he got out of shape and shut off against Tony Christian. Bob then won the IHRA Texas Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 7.31/189.43, and in round one, his 7.36/187 beat Gonzalez. In the second round, a 7.32/187.03 beat Adam's 7.42/186, and in the semifinals, he reset IHRA's ET record to 7.30 at 189.27 while beating Smith's close 7.33/190. A final round 7.31/184.50 sewed up the victory over Tim Nabors' 7.36/188. At Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals, a 7.46 qualified #5, and he had Top Speed of the meet at 188.29. But after beating Alban Gauthier in the first round, he again lost to Christian in round two. It was then off to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Glidden qualified #2 and lasted until round two, where his 7.54/184.27 lost to Johnson Jr's holeshot 7.58/182. NHRA's fifth race of the year was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. Johnson Jr. stopped Bob in round two. Another win came at the IHRA Summernationals at Atco. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.316 190.27. Bob beat Dempsey Hardy in round one, and in round two, his 7.37/187.89 beat Delco's 7.47/185. A semifinal 7.36/187.89 took out Frank Iaconio and set up another all Motorcraft T-Bird final with Rickie. Bob got the victory with a 7.37/187.50 over Smith's 7.46/188. It was surprising that Glidden hadn't even reached the semifinals in the first five NHRA races, but he changed all that at the Springnationals. He qualified #1 with a 7.44 and beat Johnson Jr. in the first round, and Nick Nikolis in round two. This put him in the semifinals for the first time in '88, where he faced Joe Lepone Jr. A 7.46/186 put Joe on the trailer, and Bob moved into the final where he met Bruce Allen in the Reher-Morrison Beretta. Bob set Low ET of the meet with a final round 7.42 at 188.08 to beat Allen's 7.49/186. He then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 7.37/188.75 qualified #2. But in the first round, the car got out of shape, and Bob lost to Christian. The shit hit the fan at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Bob qualified #2 with a 7.47 behind Allen's 7.46. After hitting the scales after a qualifying run, one of the IHRA officials told Glidden that they would pull a head and check for nitrous. Bob said that was fine and to meet him at his trailer to do it. The official said no that they were going to do it right there. There was no way Glidden was going to pull a cylinder head at the scale in front of all the Pro Stock teams. Once again, he stated he would gladly let them pull the cylinder in his trailer. At this point, another official walked up, telling Bob he should leave and not come back. So, Glidden and his family started to pack up and leave. Just before they were ready to pull out, another official comes by and says that they decided to check the engines in the trailers. Glidden told him it was too late and that they were leaving. Glidden was not alone as the Reher and Morrison team also packed up and left as they were also asked to pull a head at the scales. The owner and president of IHRA, Billy Meyer, was asked why he thought the top two qualifiers left, and his response was, "They were probably cheating.” So, both teams were banned from any more IHRA events for '88. Later, Meyer denied saying that and said, "There's no doubt in my mind they weren't cheating.” It was a bold move on Glidden to pull out as his sponsor, Motorcraft, also sponsored the race. Bob would never race at another IHRA event. He had 20 victories in IHRA competition and was the organization's '76 Pro Stock world champion. After that fiasco, he went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He ran Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.38/188.12. An opening round 7.49/185 beat Dempsey Hardy and he then beat Delco and Mark Pawuk to reach the final. He ran Jerry Eckman in the final, and Bob's 7.46/185.91 got the victory over Eckman's 7.54/183. Another win followed at Seattle early in August for the NHRA Seafair Nationals. He qualified #1 with a track record (and NHRA record) of 7.31 at 189.59 (Top Speed). He ran 7.3s throughout eliminations. A 7.35/189 beat Eckman in round two, and a semifinal 7.37/188 beat Butch Leal. This time, his final-round opponent was Warren Johnson. Bob took the win with a 7.37/188.52 over Johnson's 7.42/186.

Notes: Leal started the 1988 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 7.42/186.14 qualified #8. He worked his way to the final, stopping Tony Christian in the semis with a 7.47/186, setting him up to face Mark Pawuk. A final round 7.45/186.95 gave Butch the victory. It was a great way to start the season. He almost doubled up at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #13 with a 7.40/188.12. It was a tough show to make as 55 cars attempted to qualify. He again reached the final, but a 7.41/187.22 finished runner-up to Bruce Allen's 7.36/189. He did not race at any IHRA events. His next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Things didn't go too well there as he lost to Allen in the opening round. At the NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis, his 7.49/186.06 qualified #12. He beat Larry Morgan and Jerry Eckman before losing a 7.52 decision to Kenny Delco's 7.50. It was then off to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Unfortunately, Leal failed to qualify. He was the first alternate at 7.51/185.22. He rebounded by making it into the semis at the NHRA Springnationals, where he lost to Allen. The seventh NHRA race of the season was the Grandnationals in Canada. Butch qualified #12 for the show with a 7.44/186.02. He beat Harry Scribner in round one, and in round two, his 7.50/184 beat Frank Iaconio's quicker 7.46. He had a close race with Christian in the semifinals that saw both drivers hit 7.48 (Leal at 184), but Butch got the win light. He faced Morris Johnson Jr. in the final, but his car broke. He then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, failing to qualify.

Notes: Photo from Ennis 87. Ran 7.733/180.36 at NHRA Grandnational Molson 87, which was the fifth alternate for the show. He was the nineteenth alternate at Englishtown for the Summernationals with a 7.69/180.54 best. He then went to Denver for the Mile High Nationals where his 8.10/170.13 was good for the fourth alternate. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Brainerd for the Northstar Nationals. There he was the eighth alternate with a 7.74/178.14. Sway was making some big end power at Indy for the US Nationals, but it was a tough field to crack into and his 7.59/186.52 best (twelfth alternate) didn't. Joe was only one spot away from making the field at Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. His 7.57/181.92 best was the first alternate. At Texas for the Chief Nationals, Sway ran 7.43/183.93 to qualify in the top half of the field (#8). In the opening round his 7.46/183.48 beat Tony Christian's 7.49/185, but a 7.52/183.44 in the second round lost to Jerry Eckman's 7.44/185. After running so well at Texas, it was surprising to see his name among the non-qualifiers at the Fallnationals. His 7.62/182.11 was the fourth alternate there. He ended his NHRA season back at Pomona for the World Finals. It didn't end as he would have liked as he was the fourth alternate again with a 7.51/183.59 best.

Notes: Lee Shepherd and Bob Glidden waged war in Pro Stock unlike any had seen before in the class. Glidden started the season in his Arrow, in which he had won the NHRA Pro Stock championship the year before. It wasn't cutting it in 1980. Lee won the first two NHRA events of the season, with Glidden's best showing being a runner-up at the Gatornationals. Bob had Don Hardy build him a new Fairmont that debuted at Suffolk for a match race against Bill Jenkins. He had just delivered the Arrow to its new owner. Glidden was happy to be back in a Ford as he defeated Jenkins three straight with times of 8.35/158, 8.37/158, and 8.51/153. He then took it to Indianapolis for the NHRA Division Three opener. During qualifying, he reset the NHRA speed record to 162.16. The accompanying ET of 8.43 (Low ET) gave him the pole. In the first round, he ran 8.52/153.32 to beat Don Coonce's 8.74/153, and an 8.46/154.10 in the semi-final beat Jim Mikel's 8.85/153. In the final, he blasted out a 8.51/158.17 for the victory over Sam Gianino's off-pace 9.29/154. He was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals the following week. He qualified #1 with a Low ET of the meet 8.41 at 160.71 while Shepherd qualified #5 in the eight-car show with an 8.54, meaning that the two would meet in the first round. In that first-round match-up, Lee ran another 8.54/158 that beat Glidden's quicker 8.49/160.71. Lee went on to win his third straight national event. Bob had to get his act together quickly if he was to win another championship. On May 4, he won the second Division 3 race at Edgewater, setting Low ET and Top Speed while qualifying #1 with a 8.48/158.45. He beat Andy Mannarino in the final with an 8.50/153.32. He then made a move on Shepherd at the NHRA Springnationals. An 8.52/158.45 qualified #1, while Lee's 8.57 was second in the now big block Camaro. Bob set Low ET in the first round with an 8.49/157.61 single when Roy Hill broke on the line. He got another solo in round two went "Dyno Don's" Mustang broke on the line. Bob advanced with an 8.54. He then stopped Frank Iaconio's 8.60/156 in the semi-final with an 8.53/154. In the final, Bob got his first national event win of the year with an 8.53/155.70 stopping Shepherd's 8.62/155. He then went to Martin, Michigan, for the next NHRA Division Three race and won that as well, beating Joe Satmary in the final. Another win followed on June 28 at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Bob qualified #1 with a Low ET of the Meet 8.99 (Bandimere's first eight), while the Reher-Morrison Camaro was second with a 9.02. Together they mowed down the competition to meet again in the final, where Bob ran another 8.99/149.50 to win over Shepherd's close 9.01/147. Going into the Summernationals, Bob was 3,000 points behind Shepherd. In qualifying, Glidden looked good, running an 8.41/159.29 for the #1 spot. Lee was second with an 8.48/159. Once again, they ran through the field to meet in the final. Bob ran a best of 8.48/159.85 in eliminations while Lee's best was an 8.50/162. In the final, Shepherd ran an 8.54/158 that beat Bob's 8.53/159.29. Glidden won the NHRA Division 3 race at Union Grove and set Low ET and Top Speed. He qualified #1 at the PHR Championships with an 8.59 while his nemesis ran an 8.67 for third. Both got past the first-round with Glidden setting Low ET at 8.52 in beating Paul Gentilozzi. Gidden and Shepherd met with the Camaro breaking at half-track in the semifinals and Bob winning with an 8.53/158.17. Bob went on to win the event with a final round 8.58 over Jim Kinnett. The NHRA tour traveled up to Canada for the Grandnationals where an 8.47/159.29 (Top Speed) by Glidden was good for #2 in qualifying as Shepherd got the pole. Once again, the two raced through the field to meet in the final for the fifth time this year. Unfortunately, Bob's line lock was faulty so he rushed through his burnout. In a rush, he left the Lenco in third gear so when the light turned green, the car just bogged off the line. He could only watch as Lee ran an 8.44/159 for his fifth win of the year. Bob also won the final NHRA Division Three race held at Beech Bend near the middle of August. That made it a clean sweep as he won all the Division three races. At the last event, he qualified #1, got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round and ran 8.58/157.61. He then beat Coonce's 8.75/153 in the semi-final with a 8.55/157.61. He faced Andy Mannarino in the final and Andy's 8.74/155 finished runner-up to Glidden's 8.54/160.42 (Low ET, Top Speed, and new track records). Bob was kicking himself after Indy for the US Nationals. He qualified #1 with Low ET and Top Speed at 8.43/161.29. Both he and the second qualifier (8.45) worked their way to the final. Bob was running much quicker than Shepherd during eliminations. His 8.48/161.00 in the opening round beat Alban Gauthier's 8.85/156. A round two 8.51/158.87 took out Dempsey Hardy's 8.76/154 and in the semi-final, he ran 8.46/160.71 to defeat Iaconio's 8.53/160. By comparison, Lee ran 8.54 in his semi-final race. It looked as though Bob had the edge, but he fouled away an 8.48/154 while Lee got his sixth win with an 8.50/159. Bob was now 426 markers behind Shepherd. Glidden had to do something fast and he did at the next event, the NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle. He showed up with a new destroked Cleveland of 327 cubic inches. He qualified #1 with an 8.35/159.85 while Shepherd was unusually farther back with an 8.52/157 qualifying #4. Glidden set an 8.324 national record in the semifinal while Lee stayed in the game with an 8.44/158 beating Iaconio and putting the two in yet another final round. This time, Glidden took his fourth NHRA national event win of the year and 30th overall, with an 8.41/159.85 beating Lee's 8.51/158. This tightened up the points chase considerably, but Bob was still a long shot going into the season finale. At the Ontario World Finals, Shepherd and Glidden qualified #1 and #2 at 8.433/159.17 and 8.465/158.17, respectively. Both won in round one, but Shepherd had troubles and slowed to a 16-second shutoff in round two, sending Andy Mannarino on to the third round. Glidden marched through the field and beat Frank Iaconio in the final. His 8.428/159.85 defeated Frank's 8.55/159, set Low ET and Top Speed of the Meet, and claimed Bob the 1980 NHRA Pro Stock championship.

Notes: First Pro Stock with struts built by SRD. | From mid-'73 until the NHRA rulebook caught up to them at the end of the '75 season, the Ford's owned Pro Stock competition. A lot of finals saw just two blue oval cars racing for the title. Chevy lovers had this man to root for. Jenkins was by far the strongest Chevy campaigner during this time. The '75 season was no different. He showed up at Pomona running a dry sump oiling system. In qualifying, his 8.84/154.90 was #3 behind the Fords of Wayne Gapp and Bob Glidden. Bill’s opening round 8.87/155.44 beat alternate Mickey Mills' 9.25/145 and he ran 8.80/155.44 (again) in round two to beat Scott Shafiroff who had just switched from a Chevy to a Ford. Jenkins' speed was a new NHRA record. He faced yet another Ford in the semifinals, this time it was low qualifier, Gapp’s new four-door Maverick. Bill must have been a little concerned about the car as he fouled against him. As it turned out, Wayne had clutch problems on the run and Jenkins probably would have won. It was also probably because of his light at Pomona that he let Larry Lombardo drive his car at the NHRA Gatornationals. Larry qualified third behind the same two Fords and ironically, he fouled against Glidden in the semifinals. Bill was back behind the wheel for a best of three match race against Gapp at Cayuga. Things didn't go his way as he lost three straight with a best of 8.89/152.02. At the NHRA Springnationals, of course, Bill qualified #3 with a 9.01/150.75, but this time only Gapp's Ford was ahead of him. Dave Kanners slipped his Hornet into the #2 spot. Bill started eliminations with a 9.04/151.00 over Charlie Reed while a second round 9.03/150.50 beat Wally Booth's 9.09/149. In the semifinals, his 9.01 beat future superstar Warren Johnson's 9.08 and moved him into the final against Roy Hill. Jenkins was the favorite as Hill qualified #16 and was at least a tenth off the pace and it showed in the final where the "Grump's" 8.98/152.28 got the victory over Hill's 9.16/149. Jenkins moved up a spot in qualifying at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 8.92/152.02 was second to Gapp's 8.89/152. These two would meet in the final. Bill started by running an 8.97/152.80 over Larry Huff's 9.15. A round two 8.92/154.63 beat Johnson's 9.11/149 and in the semifinals his 8.94/152.54 advanced when Shafiroff's Mustang II broke. Bill tried really hard in the final as he must have left a dent in the floorboard by the gas pedal. His 8.93/154.90 (Top Speed) lost to Gapp's 8.80/154.63. He was at Maryland soon after that, for the US Pro Stock Open. Bill set Low ET in the first round, with an 8.83 that beat Pat Musi. But in round two the car broke while beating Bob Ingles and he was unable to return for the semifinal. He expected his new Monza to be ready for the NHRA Grandnationals and he had sold both his Vegas. Unfortunately, the Monza was not done and Jenkins had to skip the Grandnationals as he had no car to race. The new Monza debuted in time for the PHR Championships later in August.

Notes: Kinnett qualified on the "bump" at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with an 8.74/153.06. In the opening round, his 8.77/155.17 beat alternate Lamar Walden's 8.92/151. In round two, his 8.87/152.80 fell to Don Campanello's 8.68/156. Jim was at DeSoto for the NHRA Division Two opener at the beginning of April. Only six cars showed, and his 8.93/152.02 in the first round beat Bill Robertson. In the semi-final, an 8.85/155.05 beat Wyman Barnett, who blew an engine. He faced "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the final, and despite running an 8.83/153.52, he finished runner-up to Don's 8.63/151. He was in Baton Rouge near the end of the month for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Rain delayed the running of the race until May 2, and he fouled against eventual winner Bob Glidden in the first round. Kinnett had one of the four Mopar Pro Stockers to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 8.86 sat on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. His 8.94/151.00 in the opening round advanced when Alban Gauthier fouled. But in round two, he fouled at 8.96/151.51 against "Dyno Don's" 8.82/152. He qualified #13 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with an 8.73, but he lost to Glidden in round two. Next came a runner-up finish to Lee Shepherd at the NHRA Division Four race at Baton Rouge. Kinnett also ran well at the final NHRA Division Three race held at Beech Bend. While he didn't reach the final, he set Top Speed at 155.17. In August, Jim was one of only three Pro Stock cars at Richmond Dragway for the NHRA Division Two race. He qualified #1 with an 8.72/153.84 (Low ET and Top Speed) and got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round. In the final, his 8.73/151.00 easily beat Morris Johnson's 9.43/123. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, he was unfortunate as his 8.721/153.84 qualified #9. It was unfortunate as he had to race low qualifier Glidden in the opening round of eliminations. Glidden's 8.58/157 easily beat Jim's 8.77/153.38. The final NHRA Division Two race was held at Gainesville. Unfortunately, his late 8.79/151.00 in the first round lost to Johnson's 9.07/147. Jim ran 8.72 in the first round of the Summernationals to beat Don Campanello. We see an 8.720 on the results sheet, but that may be dropping the third digit. We are listing that 8.720 as his best for now, but otherwise, his 8.721 at Indy is Jim's quickest confirmed ET of the year. We need validation of the several 8.72s he ran in 1979. Former Vanke, Castaldo 1973 car reskinned as a Volare.
