Notes: During this season, they used two engines-a Merc flathead owned by Vincent and a 306ci Chevy owned by Santos. Al Hubbard had built the Chev motor. Whichever engine was giving the best results at any given meet was the motor they went with. For instance, they alternated between both motors at the 2-day Smokers World Championships at Bakersfield on Sep. 1/2. When difficulties developed in the flathead, they installed the Chevy and went with it all the way through, taking a Top Eliminator victory. It was popularly called Top Banana but also was called the City Garage Special. They ran at tracks throughout Northern California-from Kingdon to Half Moon Bay to Vacaville, doing well at each. They took Top Eliminator at Half Moon Bay on Aug. 11 and at Kingdon on Oct. 6. Photo: Hanford Sentinel, Sep. 3, 1957 - MB
