Notes: Hank was at Bremerton on May 24 for the NHRA Division Six race. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 7.35/158.17. He got to solo in the first round when Terry Kniss broke. Hank ran 6.93/207.84 to advance. He ran another 6.93/207.84 in the semi-final, but it wasn't enough as he lost to the eventual winner, Walt Johnson's 6.71/217. Near the end of July, he was at Spokane for the fourth NHRA Division Six race. A 7.09/220.04 qualified #6 for the eight-car show. The race where Jerry Ruth and Herm Petersen both failed to qualify at. But Hank didn't hang around long in eliminations as he lost to the eventual winner, Dick Kalivoda, in the opening round. Mike Gagnon info. |

Notes: I built my chassis at Haulin Chassis Winter of 64/65. None of the uprights were welded to the bottom frame rails from the firewall forward to the torsion tube. Mid 1965, I started to build my own slider clutches. This caused me to get behind the wheel for the 1966 season. I only ran a 354 CI Hemi that was .030" over along with a lower gear. Our MPH was usually between 202 MPH and 210 MPH because of the gearing, but ETs were as low as 7.50. |

Notes: Herm had his new streamliner out for the first time at Irwindale in January. He made two easy passes before getting on it and running a 6.78/205. The car was a 6.300 fifth alternate (speed unavailable) at Pomona. Shortly after that, he went to Rocket City Raceway for a best-of-three-match race against Don Garlits. He lost all three races, turning a 6.78/188.67 best. The track had not been used for two years, and the cold weather also kept the cars from getting any traction. Still, Garlits had run a best of 6.26/198 in their match. Because he was the defending race winner of the NHRA Gatornationals, all he had to do was make a pass to qualify. Petersen's 6.634/221.13 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. He lost first-round to Carl Olson's holeshot-aided 6.730/186.72 to Herm's 6.637/218.44. Herm had realized before this that he had to switch back to a more conventional car. The beautiful Can-Am-inspired body looked great but was too heavy for the car to pull. Don Ewald and others have said that if the team had tried this with one of the powerful new 426 aluminum motors instead of the 392-based motor, it is possible the experiment would have worked. |

Notes: Chip set Top Fuel ET record on 5/72 at Epping NH (6.27) (after Clayton Harris' 6.25 record was retired after a rules change). We need to confirm that it was this car and not the Gene Snow machine. |

Notes: Gene Snow built this Top Fuel car for the '72 season. The 225" chassis was built by Woody Gilmore (RCE), and a Keith Black Hemi powered it. Internals include Crower cam, M/T rods, and Forgedtrue 6.5:1 pistons. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold while the 76% nitro was fed to the engine by Enderle injection. The GMC 6/71 was built by Don Hampton. Don Kirby did the paint, and Nat Quick did the lettering. Snow picked 21-year-old Chip Woodall, who had recently been driving for Jackie Peebles to handle the dragster. He debuted at Pomona and qualified at 6.71/194 but lost the first-round on a fouling 7.27/204. He won NHRA Columbus with best times of 6.396/225.00. The 6.396 was low et and #1 qualifier. In round two, he ran 6.490/227.27 at the Amarillo World Finals but lost to a Herm Petersen holeshot 6.52. Those three were the only NHRA national events for the team in 1972. Chip was injured in an accident in Hope, Arkansas, on the way to the Summernationals, and the car was destroyed. Did Chip earlier run 6.20 at NED? Where were the 6.11/233 numbers run? |
