Notes: Is the photo from '75 or '76? - JB | Tom ran really well in his Duster in '75, especially on the AHRA Grand American Series. It didn't start so well when he failed to qualify at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, but at Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran 6.32 to qualify #5. In the first round, he beat Ed McCulloch with a 6.61/206.89 over Ed's 6.72/197. He lost to Bill Leavitt in the second round. At the Bakersfield March Meet on March second, only 12 Funny Car's showed. Tom qualified #9 with a 6.46/203.16. He fell off to a 6.88 at 164.23 in the first round, and lost to McCulloch. Tom went to OCIR for the AHRA Grand American in March. He ran 6.57 (Low ET) to qualify first. In the first round, a 6.62/216.86 beat Roger Garten in the "Warhorse" Mustang. In the semifinals, he beat Neil Leffler with a 6.58/210.77. The final saw him facing Jake Johnston in the "Pisano & Matsubara" car. It was a close race, but Tom's 6.77/213.27 won over Jake's 6.78/220. He did not enter the NHRA Gatornationals as it was run on the same weekend as the AHRA race. McEwen was at Irwindale in April for the National Funny Car Championships. He beat Gary Southern in the first round, but then failed to appear for his second-round call and was replaced by Southern. In May, McEwen was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #8 in the sixteen-car show. He and his opponent, Tripp Shumake, smoked the tires in the first round, but Tom's 6.98 came out on top. In the second round, his 6.84/199.11 lost to Dick Custy's 6.74. The AHRA Springnationals was held at St. Louis, and Tom was there running 6.60/201.35 to qualify #4. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. A 6.55/203.16 qualified #10 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. In the first round, he went into heavy tire smoke and lost to McCulloch. Tom was the second alternate at Ontario on 10/12/75 at 6.406/230.76. Ran 6.365 205.47 at the US 131 PHR Championships. ET from Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/01/75 |

Notes: Great looking red, white, and blue car. - Danny White | Featured on the cover of the 2/72 Drag Times after its debut at Englishtown, NJ. - RT | Sam Miller entered the Funny Car wars in '71 by buying Don Prudhomme's old 'Cuda from '70. He graduated to a Duster that he scored a win with at the NHRA Grandnationals in '71. Unfortunately, a few weeks after his win the car had a blower failure at Epping, New Hampshire, that blew the body off the car. For the '72 season, Sam had John Buttera build him this 114" Mustang bodied car. The body came from Fiberglass Ltd. and the tinwork was handled by S&W. The engine was a Fred Forkner built 426 Hemi. It used a stock crank that was balanced and clearanced. M/T rods were used as well as 6.5:1 Forgedtrue pistons. Isky was the choice for the cam. The GMC 6/71 was prepared by Keith Black and it sat on a Cragar manifold. Cragar was also responsible for the blower drive. Going against the grain, Sam used a Crower injection unit to feed the engine the 90% nitro. The power was transmitted back to a 5.14 Ford rear end by a Lenco two-speed. Best times reported by September. '72 Rodder and Super Stock magazine were 6.63/219. He was back at Sanair for the NHRA Grandnationals where he qualified for the field with a 6.86. But an off-pace 7.66/151.51 in the opening round lost to eventual winner Don Schumacher's 6.75/206. | Confirmed 6.68 at Epping 72. Times from (Rodder & Super Stock 9/72) |

Notes: 121" wheelbase car retained stock unitized steel body; with glass front end weighed a portly 2400 lbs. Four-page feature in Feb/March '68 Drag Parts Illustrated. - RT | Confirmed 8.63/168.22 at OCIR Manufacturer's Meet 11/25/67. | Joe Pisano wanted to build a Camaro Funny Car after watching the crowd reaction to the class at the '66 NHRA Nationals. The Camaro had just been released and there were no fiberglass bodies yet being made. So, Joe and his brother Frank bought a brand new six-cylinder Camaro and drove it back to Doug Kruse Engineering. The factory fresh car was stripped down to begin its new life as a drag racer. Kruse then built a custom chassis that had the rear wheels moved forward 9" from their stock location. The one-piece fiberglass front end had 22" added to its length. That and the trunk lid were provided by Fiberglass Trends. The rest of the body including the doors was still factory steel. Pisano's engine experience was with the early Chrysler Hemi. This was his first Chevy "Rat" motor. It was a stock sized 427 that used a Reath crank. Howards rods were used along with 7:1 Venolia pistons. Howards also supplied the cam. Mondello reworked the cylinder heads. A four-port Hilborn Injection unit sat on top a Don Hampton blower. A Mopar rear end with 3.90 gears was used. Weight on the car was 2,440 and early runs saw Frank hit 8.23/174.84. Frank ran 8.23/167.59 at Lions on August 12. |

Notes: Dale was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 5.465/274.39 to qualify #11. He improved to a 5.366/269.70 to beat Tom Hoover's close 5.37/275 in the first round. In round two, he ran 5.378/268.97 over Art Hendey's 5.66/225. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.89/235. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Dale ran 5.386/270.51 to qualify #7. He beat Scott Kalitta in round one, 5.335/262.39 to 5.43/263, and in the second round, his 5.329/268.81 beat Hoover's 5.47/266. Pulde moved into the final by getting around John Force in the semifinals. It was a close race as both drivers ran 5.33 (Dale at 5.330/260.86, John at 5.334/274), but the "In-N-Out Burger" car got the win. In the final, Dale was up against the '89 NHRA Champ, Bruce Larson. Bruce had problems and shut off while Pulde motored to a 5.371/266.27 for the victory. The team also ran at Sonoma (5.665/262.46 Q16 and a first-round loss to Larson, 5.30/276 to 5.672/247.04), Seattle (5.703/262.92 Q15 and a first-round loss to Jim White, 5.44/262 to 7.30/112), and the Pomona Finals (5.672/261.39 second alternate). |

Notes: 1974 Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars car. Destroyed 6/74 in a top-end crash at Lebanon Valley Dragway, NY | Car owner Mike Burkhart built this car for David Ray to drive for the '74 season. His second car, built in '72, was still being campaigned and driven by Charlie Therwhanger. Unfortunately, this car didn't last the whole year. Tony Casarez built the 115" chassis. Burkhart had always been a Chevy guy, and his early cars always used Chevy engines, but by the '70s, you had to have a Hemi or pack it in. This Vega used an Ed Pink-built Hemi. The Velasco 1/2 stroker crank gave it a 480 cubic inch displacement. Howards supplied the rods and cam while the pistons were from Forgedtrue. Air Research reworked the GMC 6/71, and up top sat an Enderle injection unit that fed 90% nitro through a Hilborn pump. A Lenco transmission delivered the power to a Ford rear with 4.10 gears. Crump Brothers of Crump Brother's Custom painting was responsible for the flamed paint job, and the lettering was by Jack Downey. As mentioned, David had this car destroyed at a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race at Lebanon Valley in July. He won his first-round race with a 6.96/196 over Larry LaDue, and his 6.86/186 beat Roger Lindamood in the semifinals, but when he pulled his 'chute, the rear end ripped off the chassis. The Vega body flew off while the rest of the car headed into the woods. It then hit a few trees, and the engine separated from the chassis. The roll cage and the remains of the chassis came to a stop on the far end of the track. Ray was OK. |

Notes: By the time Larry Reyes began driving the "Hawaiian" in 1969, he was a true funny car standout. Reyes had driven the "Super Cuda" Barracuda, the "King Fish" Barracuda, Larry Coleman's Coronet, Phil Bonner's "Daddy Warbucks, " and his own Barracuda. Reyes became the first of many funny car drivers for Roland Leong, who jumped on the funny car bandwagon after having success in dragsters with such drivers as Don Prudhomme, Mike Snively, Mike Sorokin, and Danny Ongais. Leong had a Logghe-built Stage II chassis with a full-size Ron Pellegrini-built Charger body, and Keith Black built the engine. Larry qualified on the bump spot at 8.331/180.72 at Pomona. Larry won his first-round race against Mike Hamby, 8.14/181.45 to 8.58/167, but the car literally flew and crashed, signaling the end of the full-size funny car. Leong debuted a new mini Charger shortly after that. The new "Hawaiian" won all three races it entered the first weekend with Reyes driving. Reyes drove the car to a reported best of 7.35 at 208.31 by the end of 1969. Larry left Leong and later drove for Candies and Hughes, Prock and Howell, and the last "Super Cuda." Reyes suffered an accident at the wheel of the "Super Cuda" that left him in a wheelchair. Larry returned to race 20 years later in Super Gas. Leong went on to race and tune funny cars for the next 25 years with a seemingly endless list of drivers. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info from James Ibusuki) |
