Notes: Dick Harrell was known as Mr. Chevrolet, sticking with the brand long after the rest of the top Chevy-bodied teams had gone to 426 elephant power. From www.dickharrell.com: "Dick even entered a full season of competition knowing he couldn't win any big meets when he stuck with Chevrolet power in 1970 simply because he felt his fans expected him to remain loyal." The popular racer was forced to switch to a Hemi in 1971 to remain competitive, but his fan base did not abandon him. - RT | Dick's new Camaro for '70 was 300 lbs. lighter than his '69 car. The body alone was 100 lbs. lighter, and it only weighed 1,980 lbs. He continued to run the Chevy engine. The heads were from Mondello and used 2.20-inch intakes and 1.90 exhaust valves. He used Venolia pistons and Howard's rods as well as camshaft. A Cragar manifold rested a Don Hampton-built blower that was overdriven between 24 to 27%. At high altitude tracks, it went as high as 34%. An Enderle injection was used up top. Dick used a B&M-built Turbohydro automatic transmission, and it was claimed to be able to last between 70-80 runs. He had used a Pontiac rear end in his '69 car, but for '70, he switched to a Mopar unit with 3.90 gears. On May 17, he was at Frontier International for the fourth AHRA Grand American race. He blew a transmission during qualifying and had to swap out a new one. But after all that work, the car's ailing 8.23/176.12 in the opening round loss to Jay Howell's 7.82/170. His next stop was at Detroit for the next AHRA Grand American. Unfortunately, he also lost early there. Harrell ran pretty well at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. His first-round 7.60/176.41 advanced when Tommy Smith broke. In the second round, his 7.64/176.47 upset Tom McEwen's 7.79/171. He was to face Fritz Callier in the semifinals, but the Camaro lost fire, and Dick could only watch as Callier soloed into the final with a 9.10. LaPlace held a Top Fuel vs. Funny Car race that saw the FC's get a half-second handicap. In the first round, he ran 7.69 to beat a fouling Richard Tharp. Dick lost a transmission in his second race and slowed to a 12.10 while losing to Ronnie Martin's 7.22. In the last race, a troubled 10.55 lost to Preston Davis' 7.09. Harrell raced at Green Valley Raceway for AHRA's Labor Day Weekend race. He beat Art Ward in the first round, with a 7.73, and a 7.70 in the second round beat Bill Rogers. In the semifinals, he came up against Jake Johnston, driving the "Blue Max." Dick tried hard, but his 7.58/192.70 was no match for Jake's 7.07/191. |

Notes: Higginbotham was at Green Valley Raceway on September 3. It was a day that he would never forget. He had won his first-round race with a 7.49. Everything seemed good for his second-round race. His opponent was running a Chrysler Hemi. The Chevy engines would heat up quickly, so the two competitors agreed to do two burnouts and then stage. While Mart did his two burnouts and pulled to the line. He looked over as the other driver was in the process of doing his third. Higginbotham checked his temperature gauge, and it was creeping up. He was getting frustrated as his opponent pulled to the line and did one more short burnout. By now, the engine was hot. When the two finally raced, Mart got out on him and was in the lead, but coming up to the finish line, the car exploded into a ball of fire. He couldn't see anything and reached around for the fire bottle. He didn't know if he was on or off the track, and the parachute had burned off shortly after he deployed it. He was having a tough time getting the mess stopped, and five feet from the end of the track, he finally did. Harry Schmidt was the first to get to him as he had been down at the end of the track. The ambulance arrived, and they flipped the body's remains off the chassis. Mart's arm had been badly burnt. The fire extinguisher system had been installed only three weeks before this race. He did not like to race with his fire boots as he found them too uncomfortable and bulky to use. He hadn't worn them on his first pass but had them on for the second. He also was wearing his goggles for the first time. Usually, he wore his glasses. It was a wake-up call for him as he always wore them after that. Not long after (September 6), Mart raced at LaPlace for a four-car round-robin. He was unable to get the car to run in the sevens. He lost to Leonard Hughes' 7.33/205 in the first race with an 8.01/184.42. He singled in his second race with an 8.20/157.61. In the last race, Al Vanderwoulde's 7.98/150 beat his 8.24/158.42. He ran an eight-car show in Dallas on September 20 but popped a blower in the first round and lost. He did much better the following week (September 28) at Rockingham for the AHRA US Open, where he made it to the final before losing to Gene Snow's 7.13. He got a big win at Tulsa for the AHRA Points Finals on October 19. He qualified second with a 7.60 and ran an even quicker 7.56 over Paula Murphy in the first round. In the second round, a 7.72 beat John Dekker's 8.22. Snow fouled against him in the semifinals. In the final, he ran another good run of 7.57, but it wasn't needed as Connie Kalitta broke, giving Mart his first big victory. Sid Foster met Mart at Carlisle ark for a best two out of three match race. A 7.97/193.20 lost to Sid's 7.92/198 in the first race, but he picked it up to a 7.33/193 in the second race to beat Foster's 7.51/199. In the tiebreaker, Mart broke a rear end on the burnout letting Foster single for the match race win. He was the quickest qualifier (7.30) at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet on November 7. The actual race was postponed by rain until November 16. In his first race, a 7.95/195.65 lost to Dick Bourgeois' 7.74/161. In his second race, he did his burnout and found that he had no reverse. That let Gene Snow run a 7.54/194 solo pass. Mart got it all together for his last race, beating Bob Bedell with a 7.64. Mart won at Irwindale on November 23 over a 32-car field. He ran 7.54/187.50 over Della Woods (8.44/174), an 8.68 over a blowing-up Paul Gordon, a 7.60/176.81 over Jess Tyree (8.23/182), and a 7.73/187.10 in the semifinals beat Fred Goeske's 7.81/184 Road Runner. In the final, he defeated Dave Beebe for the victory. - RH | BBC/TorqueFlite/Hardy combo. Featured in 1/71 issue of Super Stock & Funny Car. - RT | Ran 7.35 at Rockingham. |

Notes: Johnson started driving in mid-season and still finished second in the NHRA Division Five FC standings. He was also named Division Five's "Rookie Driver of the Year." In one of his earliest openings with the car, he was at Bison Dragways for a best of three match against Russell Long, who was driving the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the first race, his 7.78/177.07 lost to Long's 6.81. Rick then evened the score by running 6.76/206.42 to win the second race. But in the final run, both smoked the tires, and Russell recovered first to win at 10.61. He qualified at Englishtown, Seattle, and Ontario, with respective best times of 6.596/216.34, 6.550/218.44, and 6.313/228.42. Rick made it to the second round at Ontario. |

Notes: Ran 6.86 at Detroit. | Kalitta quit running the Ford engines in '70 when Ford pulled out of racing. For '71, he unveiled a new slippery Mustang powered by a 426 Hemi. On May 27, he was at Atco for a best of three match race against Tom Sneden in the Bob Banning Challenger. Kalitta won three straight with times of 7.26/204 on a solo when Sneden broke, 7.05/189.47, and 7.06/202.70. Conrad was at Tri-City in June for an eight-car race where all eight-cars were to make three runs. In his first race, a 7.35/191.89 lost to Mike Burkhart's 7.07/207. He won his second race with a 7.12/207.85 over Frank Oglesby's 7.54/201. In his third race, he lost with a 7.26/168.22 to Gordon Mineo's 7.04/193. |
