Notes: Early in '69, until the Danny Ongais-Mickey Thompson combo jelled, there were calling Rich Siroonian the killer of the funny cars. Like most other Funny Car drivers, he started the year at the Irwindale New Year's Day meet, where he qualified second with a 7.62 behind Don Schumacher's 7.50. He got crossed-up in the first round and shut down to 11.85, losing Norm Weekly's 8.10/192. Another first-round loss came at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 before losing to Dave Beebe in the "Super Chief" in the first round. At Pomona on February 2 for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #6 with an 8.22/185.11 and a first-round 8.45 beat Ed Schartman's quicker 8.39. In the second round, an 8.10 beat Schumacher's 8.12. But in the semifinal, both he and Ray Alley ran 8.27 (Siroonian at 184.42), with Alley winning. He won the second OCIR All-Pro race on February 9 after qualifying second with a 7.47/196.50 (Top Speed)behind Charlie Allen's 7.46/191. He got some "revenge" over Alley in the opening round, where his 7.55/193.12 topped Alley. He then improved to 7.44/19.80 in the semifinal to beat Dale Armstrong, driving Gary Crane's ailing Javelin. In the final, he met and defeated Schumacher's 7.62/192 with a 7.39/195.22. Another win came at an eight-car show at Lions on February 22. After qualifying second with a 7.72 behind Randy Walls' 7.70, Rich then beat Leroy Hales in the first round before running 7.71/188.28 in the semifinal over Jim Liberman's 7.82/185, and in the final, a 7.70/189.07 beat Alley. He seemed to have a habit of qualifying second, and at Bakersfield on March 2, his 7.73 qualified behind Danny Ongais' 7.63 in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. His opening round 8.50/181.45 beat alternate Hale's 9.06/165, and a semifinal 8.23/189.07 advanced when Dick Loehr broke. He met Ongais in the final. Danny ran a 7.56/193 Low ET of the meet to stop Rich's 7.74/192.71. At Riverside on March 16 for the HRM Championships, a 7.73 qualified Rich #5, and he beat Rusty Delling in the first round, with a speed of 191.89. He broke and could not make the second round. On March 29, for the final OCIR All-Pro event, he ran a first-round 7.62/193.80 over Gordon Mineo, but Charlie Allen's 7.62/191 stopped his 7.68/192.70 in the semis. Irwindale held an eight-car show on April 13, and a 7.58/191.88 (Top Speed) qualified the 'Cuda #2 behind Ongais' 7.48. In the first round, Mike Van Sant fouled against him, and Rich still ran a 7.64/190.66. In the semifinal, against Steve Bovan, it was his turn to foul. On May 3 at the OCIR Manufacturer's Funny Car Open, he qualified #1 for the Mopar team with a 7.68/190.26 (third overall). Ongais' 7.55/192 beat his 7.61/194.80 in the first race, and not only did he foul in his second race against Jim Ward's Javelin, but he blew his trans as well. In his third race, an 8.71/168.53 beat Mike Van Sant. For the title, it was Ongais against Siroonian, but the 'Cuda broke another transmission, and Danny's 7.88/188 won. On May 10, Lions held an eight-car show, and Rich's 7.70 (Low ET) qualified #1. He singled with a 7.71/189.43 in the first round when Bob Hightower shut down in Doug Thorley's Javelin. He shut down with no oil pressure against Gordon Mineo in the semifinal. Another win came his way on May 17 over an eight-car field at Irwindale. A first-round 7.74/192.30 beat Walls' 7.81/180, and a semifinal 7.70/195.22 beat Johnny Wright's ailing "Hellfire "Corvette. In the final, Rich's 7.79/190.26 beat low qualifier Beebe's quicker 7.77/196. Shortly after this, the team revamped the car with a Keith Black 426 installed farther back in the chassis, replacing the 392. |

Notes: Therwhanger was at Miami-Hollywood on Jan 9 for a sixteen-car show. Nineteen cars attempted to qualify, and while Therwhanger didn't win or even make the finals, the "pure" Chevy-powered Camaro did run a best of 7.11, giving a good account of itself. |

Notes: Bonin started the season with a big win at the Irwindale Grand Premiere on January 12. He qualified #6 with a 6.59. In the first round his 6.61 beat Mike Van Sant in the "Stone, Woods and Cooke" Mustang. Another 6.59 in the second round beat Gerry Glenn in the "Plueger and Gyger" Mustang. In the semifinal he got past Gordon Swearingen in Jim Terry's Mustang who fouled. In the final, he met Don Prudhomme. A 6.61/207.85 beat the Snake's up-in-smoke 8.19. On January 27, at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, a 6.58 qualified #15, but a first-round 6.49/225 by Jim Nicoll beat Bonin's 6.73/188.00. He failed in his bid to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.678/198.23 falling short of the 6.66 bump. Gordie started driving the Pacemaker Vega and by the middle of March Mike Van Sant was in the seat of the Hawaiian. | The former Ray Alley car after Roland's '73 Buttera car was stolen in Gary, Indiana. - Joe Moore |
