Notes: "Fast Eddie" Schartman was one of the racers chosen to receive one of the Logghe-built Comet Cyclones from Ford Motor Company. Schartman had worked his way up the racing ranks before getting into funny car racing. In 1966, he was one of the top funny car racers with the advanced machines. In 1967, he was already on his third paint job when he received the Air Lift sponsorship. The Air Lift Rattler featured the updated Logghe chassis and kept on winning. With Amos Satterlee tuning, Schartman won the Manufacturer's Funny Car Championship at Orange County with runs of 8.17/184.08, 7.85/185.18 (Low ET), and 7.87/185.56. - BS | 427 SOHC, C-6 auto combo. | Ran 8.65/164 at AHRA Winters on January 29. Eddie first ran a blower late in the year at Fremont's Third Annual exhibition Car Championships in Oct. They ran 30% nitro and beat Ronnie Runyan and Pat Minick, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the semifinals with an 8.20/179. He won the race beating Terry Hedrick's Corvair in the final with an 8.08 (Low ET). A week later, he was at Irwindale for the experimental Stock Invitational. Eddie won this race, too. He beat Doug Thorley and Roger Lindamood in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, his 7.97/181.08 beat Butch Leal's 8.28/150. Schartman faced Ron O'Donnell in the final, and he set Low ET with a 7.93 at 181.36 to win. He was at Lions in the first week of November for the East-West Funny Car Championships. Unfortunately, he exploded a blower in the opening round and lost to Leal. He wasn't down and out for long as he then won the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet. All cars ran three rounds of racing, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. An opening round 8.17/184.04 beat Leal's 8.22/176. His second round 7.85/185.18 won over Thorley, and a 7.87/185.56 in round three assured him a spot in the final. There he faced surprise finalist Roy Gay. - Ron Howard Manufacturers Meet, Orange County, CA 11/25/67 |

Notes: Kelly Chadwick is well known in two different fields. In Texas, Kelly is well known as a girls’ basketball coach. Chadwick is also known as a premier drag racer in Texas and beyond. Kelly worked his way through a series of race cars until he reached the funny car ranks. Don Hardy built all of Kelly Chadwick's cars, including the pictured Camaro. The beautiful '69 Camaro was Chadwick's third funny car and his first with a fliptop tube chassis. Kelly had raced the "Wild Thing I" Chevy II and the "Wild Thing II" Camaro, mostly in the southwest. The 1969 Camaro was the first car he took on a national tour. Chadwick joined the original Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars and was said to be the champion in 1969. The Camaro’s best times were 7.10 at 209 by the end of 1970. (Photos provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info provided by James Ibusuki) | Kelly Chadwick was always a Chevy guy. He ran really well even into '70 using the Chevy engine against the more powerful Mopar Hemis. The Hardy built 124" wheelbase Camaro used a stock sized 427 "Rat.” It used a Bowers built GMC 6/71 that was 22% overdriven. He used Hilborn injection and as much as he was a Chevy guy he did use a TorqueFlite transmission. What was unusual was the fact that he was still running a Chevy rear end with 3.70 gears. Most of this info was taken from the September. 70 S/S Magazine. The article claimed at the time of the writing a best of 7.26/207. His season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #9 with a 7.70. An opening round 7.76 beat low qualifier Dick Bourgeois who was driving Don Cook's Chevy-powered Corvette. Unfortunately, Kelly fouled against Larry Reyes in the "Hawaiian" in round two. Reyes would go on to win the race. The NHRA Gatornationals was only an eight-car show and Chadwick failed to qualify there. On March 15 he was at Dallas for the season opener. There were ten Funny Car's there and they all were to run three rounds. Kelly beat John Dekker in his first race with a 7.81 and in his second race, he again faced Dekker and he won again with a 7.75. His best time came in the third race where a 7.59/190.27 beat Bobby Steakley. He and Mike Burkhart were co-winners as both won all three of their races. In April he was at Amarillo for a best of three against the "Candies and Hughes" 'Cuda. Kelly lost the match when he lost the first two races, but he did win the third race with his 8.07 beating Leonard Hughes' 8.08. Chadwick won the Canadian Drag Race Championships held at Napierville in May. A final round 7.91/184 beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman for the money. He was one of the Coca-Cola Cavalcade of stars that raced from track to track. In early June he was at the Cavalcade race at Atco. He lost to Dale Pulde's 7.32/190 in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang in the first round, with a 7.69/174.75. In his second race, he beat Liberman's 7.57/181 with a quick-leaving 7.91/183.29. His times were not good enough to get to the final. The following week (June 13), he was at Great Meadows for another Coke race. A first-round 7.58 lost to Pulde's track record 7.45. But he beat Pulde in the semifinals and got to race Fred Goeske in the final. It was a weird final round as Chadwick lost fire and then Fred blew his engine and coasted across the line for the victory. By mid-'70, you had to run a Hemi to qualify at NHRA national events. At the NHRA Springnationals, every Funny Car qualifier ran one. But at the smaller tracks, where traction was difficult to get, the Chevys still had a chance. Kansas City held an eight-car show in the middle of June and Chadwick was there. But a first-round 7.57/178.92 was no match against Don Schumacher's 7.34/193. Suffolk held a Cavalcade race at the end of June and Kelly proved there was still a place for the "Rat" motor in Funny Car competition. His times weren't great, but he still took home the trophy. He started with a 7.50/182.92 over the ailing Mickey Thompson Mustang and n round two his 7.56 beat Bobby Wood. This put him into the final against Goeske's 'Cuda. Fred broke his transmission and Chadwick got the win with a 7.68. To show it was no fluke, he won the next Cavalcade race at Salem (Quaker City). There he ran 7.80/186.92 over Wood and he set Low ET in round two with a 7.64 at 185 while beating Johnny Wright (M/T Mustang). He again faced Goeske for the gold and this time the 'Cuda lost fire giving Kelly a 7.69/187 run for the win. The wins didn't stop as on July 5 he won the Cavalcade race at Blaney. There he beat Cliff Zink (Stone, Woods and Cook) in the final with a track record 7.50 at 199. Englishtown was the next stop for the Coca-Cola circuit and Chadwick ran well there, too. Zink beat him in the first round, with a 7.42/193 to his 7.54/192.71, but Chadwick then made runs of 7.62 and 7.50/182.92. He made another final at the Cavalcade race held at Cecil County, but he fouled against Wood. He got another big win at the PDA Funny Car Nationals held at Sunset Drag Strip, an eighth-mile track. He opened eliminations with a 5.04 over Paul Aray's 6.05. A second round 5.09 took out Jerry Caminito's SOHC-powered Mustang at 6.15 and a semifinal 5.05 beat Gordon Mineo. He met with another Chevy-powered car in a rare all-Chevy final. Bruce Larson had mirrored his times in his USA-1 Camaro. He had run 5.04, 5.08, and 5.05 to reach the final. It was sure to be a close race, and it was as both stepped it up, but Chadwick's track record 4.97 got him the victory over Larson's close 5.01. His next stop was at the Cavalcade race at Aquasco. He didn't win there. There were no Hemi-powered cars in the final at Cecil County for the Cars Magazine Championships. It was a good old Ford vs. Chevy match with Chadwick facing Tommy Grove's SOHC Mustang in the final. Grove was both quicker and faster at 7.21/196, but Kelly's 7.32/191.08 got there first, bringing home another trophy. He then faced off against the Stone, Woods and Cook Hemi-powered Mustang for a best of three match at Humboldt Country's 1,000 foot track. Chadwick won three straight, resetting the track record in the first two races with first a 5.85 and then a 5.81. A final 5.99 won the match when the Mustang blew a rear end. Yet another win came at the Niagara Cavalcade race where he stopped Steakley in the final. |

Notes: Waterman motor. This was Russell's first ride. He was a crewman for Don Schumacher before this. A 6.52 qualified #12 at the AHRA Winternationals on January 27. He shut off to a 9.45 in the first round, losing to Billy Meyer's 6.48/211. He was the sixth alternate at NHRA Pomona (times unknown). At Bakersfield on March 3, he qualified #7. The car was booked in for a best-of-three FC match against Billy Meyer at U.S. 30, Gary, Indiana, for April 21. The ad proclaimed he had run a best of 6.46/225 with the car. We need confirmation of those times. |

Notes: Chadwick had one of the last competitive Chevy-powered fuel Funny Cars. He was at Capitol Raceway in June for its Mr. Chevrolet Race. Kelly's first-round 6.90/211 beat Bruce Larson and in the semifinals, his 7.10/211 beat Mike Burkhart. He faced Butch Maas in the final and his 7.10/183 lost to Butch's 6.72/205. At the IHRA Nationals at Dallas, Kelly qualified eighth with a 6.64 in the sixteen-car field. Unfortunately, a wheelstanding 7.80 in the first round, lost to alternate Connie Kalitta's 7.10. He was at the NHRA World Finals at Amarillo. During a television interview, he stated that the car had run a best of 6.54/218 during the season. At Amarillo, his opening round 7.06 lost to Jake Johnston's 6.72. Kelly qualified at 6.679/204.54 at Tulsa PRA. Times 1972 (Tulsa TV Interview) |
