Notes: Texas ET Record. Hill's dragster was a very light 1075 pounds. He attended the NHRA National Championships at Oklahoma City, but newspapers didn't report his results. But when he returned to Texas, he emerged with successive wins that marked him as a force to be reckoned with. At the Texas State Championships at Caddo Mills on Sep. 6-7, he was runner-up to Jack Moss's twin Chevy-engined dragster in the finals for the A/D class. His best time of the meet was an impressive 9.95 seconds. On Oct. 5 at Freeway Drag Strip in Houston, he took top eliminator with 135 mph. He also got low ET of the meet. He repeated his top eliminator victory at Freeway Drag Strip on Oct. 19. He also set a new track record for A gas dragsters with 9.93 at 139.75 mph. In the first round of top eliminator, he beat Rodney Singer's blown Cad-engined dragster with 9.96 at 138 mph. He beat Linn Huit's Chrysler dragster in the next round with 10.07 at 136.36 mph. With his record-setting run, he beat J. F. Threadgill's Olds-engined A/FD in the top eliminator finals. He took a top eliminator win for the third consecutive time at Freeway Drag Strip on Nov. 9. He also clocked an unofficial 9.82-second run. En route to his TE win, he beat Mackey & Veselka (134.93 mph), Singer & Canton's blown Cad dragster (10.24 at 139.75 mph), and the final against Harold Stiefel's Pontiac dragster (10.19 at 135.95 mph). Afterward, Hill asked permission to make a single run and tied the strip's gas dragster record with 145.39 mph. (Photo: "Early drag racing photos," p.53, Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. - MB |

Notes: Potvin-blown Olds was pictured racing Jack Moss's Chevy twin on the cover of 10/18/58 Drag News. - RT | The Tulsa Tribune (3/10/58) reported he was rushing to finish his new Olds dragster in time to enter it in the Mar. 16 drag racing season opener at Tulsa North Airport. On Apr. 27, he got top eliminator and set a new track record of 127.88 mph in 11.8 seconds at Red River Drag Strip in Wichita Falls, Texas. On May 11 at Red River Drag Strip, he set a new track record with a speed of 131 mph. At the Drag News Open race at Chandler, Arizona, he bested the Masters Dragliner for top time and speed in the A/D class with 11.19 at 132.40 mph. He set a new track record during time trials at Red River during the 2-day Dragster Holiday race with 10.11 at 146 mph. The next day, he turned 147.25 mph. At the NHRA Nationals at Oklahoma City, he turned 155.17 mph in 10.45 seconds during a practice run on Aug. 28. On Nov. 2 at Walker AFB in Roswell, New Mexico, he set a new NHRA national record with 160.14 mph in 10.08 seconds. He towed his dragster to Arizona for the Arizona and Western States Championships at the Chandler Associated Drag Strip race on Nov. 30. He broke an axle. He lost to Glen Ward driving the twin-engined Howard Cam Special. Photo: "Early drag racing photos," p.55, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. -- MB |

Notes: After racing for seven years and generally getting runner-up slots at the big meets, Moss seriously considered giving up racing after a second runner-up at the NHRA National Championships at Detroit Dragway. He ran 9.74 at 165.44 mph to lose to Rodney Singer. Earlier in the year, he did well enough at smaller events. At Roswell, New Mexico, on Apr. 12, he got top eliminator with his twin 354-inch Chevies with 9.96 at 146.57 mph. At Wichita Falls on May 31, he got the top speed with 153 mph, but got runner-up in the top eliminator finals when he blew one of his engines. Notes: According to MotorTrend writer Rob Kinnan, the renowned twin-engine dragster that obliterated the AA/GD records in 1960 had its debut in 1958. Kinnan wrote, "Cam, crankshaft, and cylinder head manufacturer Howard Johansen's twin-engine rail ran a pair of poked and stroked 283 Chevys and sat in a rigid, homebuilt, 100-inch-wheelbase chassis. The car was built in 1958, originally with three two-barrels on each engine and weighing 1,350 pounds. After a few outings in that configuration, they stuck on two 4/71 blowers (each with four Stromberg 97 carbs), then put single AFBs on the blowers and finally two-hole Hilborn injectors by 1960." That is mostly correct. The right engine was 283 cubic inches, but the left engine was 330 inches or a total of 613 cubic inches. The dragster was owned, tuned, and built by Howard Johansen. By the end of December 1958, Phil Johnson owned the dragster, Johansen did the tuning, and Glen Ward was the driver. Ward wasn't the first driver, though. At its first outing at Long Beach, Lonnie Butts was driving. On its first pass, the dragster did a giant wheelstand. Butts didn't want any part of that, so they put the dragster on the trailer and looked for another driver. Glen Ward, a barber, had been driving a gas Oldsmobile dragster, and he jumped at their offer to have him drive the dual-engine dragster. They put him behind the wheel at a race at Lions on Nov. 16. They also put two 4/71 GMC superchargers on the engines for the first time, with good effect. Ward got top eliminator with 9.85 at 155.44 mph. The following week at Lions, he didn't get top eliminator because a rod got shoved through the pan on the right side engine. He did get the top time/speed of the meet with 9.84 at 155.70 mph. After repairing the engine, they towed the car to Bakersfield, and that's where the car showed its potential. Running with leveled carbs atop the blowers, he set a new world ET record of 9.10 and a track record of 166.05 mph. They would replace the carb set-up at the beginning of 1959 with Hilborn injectors. Ward would be the car's driver for the next year and a half before Jack Chrisman took the reins. Photo: Early Drag Racing Photos, p. 52, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. -- MB |

Notes: Johansen replaced the carb set-up on top of the blowers with Hilborn injectors to start the season. He also began experimenting with running the engines on straight alcohol. They did that at Bakersfield on Jan. 4, with Ward turning 8.92 at 171.42 mph. The following week, they returned to gas, running at two different tracks on the same day on Jan. 11. In the morning at Lions, Ward set a new track speed record with 162.16 mph at 9.48 seconds. They put the dragster on the trailer and towed to Santa Ana, where Ward promptly took top eliminator with 9.26 at 167.73 mph, both new track records. At Riverside the following week, on Jan. 18, Ward took gas top eliminator with 9.29 at 162.15 mph. They returned to Bakersfield two weeks later to run on straight alcohol again. Ward turned 9.29 at 169.17 mph. Two weeks later, they ran on alcohol again at Riverside, turning 8.94 at 170.45 mph. Then, two weeks later, they returned to Bakersfield and ran 8.93 at 174.08 mph before punching a rod through one of the motors on Mar. 1. This ended their experimenting with alcohol, and for the rest of the year, they only ran on gas. They were making a name in the drag racing world and were paid to come to Chandler Drag Strip in Arizona. Ward took top gas eliminator with a new track record time of 9.12 at 161 mph. Don Garlits beat them for top eliminator, but just by one car length. On Apr. 12 at Lions, they took a class win with 9.36 at 166.35 mph. A week later, at Santa Ana, they ran 9.19 at 157.87 mph on just one motor but blew a rod in the process. They repaired the engines and returned to Santa Ana a month later, getting top eliminator on May 24 with 9.71 at 152.54 mph. Then, they took several months off to prepare for the NHRA Nationals. They went to San Fernando on Aug. 11 for a shakedown run but turned just 9.27 at a slowing 153.58 mph. On about Aug. 20, they left California to go to the Nationals. They towed day and night for two days and got to Oklahoma City, where they entered the Mar-Car Invitational 1,000-foot drag races at the Fairgrounds. During eliminations, he beat the Green Monster with a run of 8.11 at 149.50 mph for the 1,000-foot distance. On the next run, the brakes failed, and Ward tried to broadslide the car, but it ran off the strip, turned over, and was destroyed. Ward was transported to the hospital in serious condition. He recovered, but they had to spend months building another dragster. It wouldn't be ready for Ward to drive until March 1960. Notes: White's dragster had a light front end, making for little wheelstands at every gear shift. At the Southern Invitational Drag Racing Championships at Red River Drag Strip in Wichita Falls on June 8, he won the B/GD class with 10.94 at 123.11 mph. At the 2-day Tri-State regionals warm-up race before the NHRA Nationals at Oklahoma City, he clocked 122.60 mph during time trials. He won top eliminator the following day with 11.57 at 123.28 mph.
