Notes: Glidden got an award before turning a wheel in '90 when he was awarded the "Racer of the Decade" by Motorweek Illustrated in January. He beat out some heavy competition for the award, including Bill Elliott, Rusty Wallace, Geoff Brabham, Steve Kinser, and Alain Prost. His 49 wins in the NHRA competition during the '80s were impressive. The NHRA season started in February at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Bob qualified #5 with a 7.33/189.27. He beat Stan Mizell in round one, with a 7.36/188.04, but in round two, his 7.36/187.73 lost to Darrell Alderman's 7.32/187. He got back into his winning ways at the NHRA Arizona Nationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with track records of 7.28/189.79. A 7.34/187.18 beat Butch Leal's 7.43/185 in the first round, while a 7.35/186.95 in round two took out Kenny Delco's 7.43/185. Jerry Eckman broke in the semifinals against him, and Bob advanced with a 7.40/186.25. He met Gordie Rivera in the final, and a 7.35/185.79 scored Glidden his 77th NHRA National event title over Rivera's 7.41/186. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Supernationals. Bob ran 7.25/190.15 (Top Speed) to qualify #3. Buddy Ingersoll fouled against him in the first round, and Bob's 7.27/189.71 advanced. In the second round, he slowed to 7.30/189.71, which lost to Delco's 7.28/188. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Bob qualified #8 with a 7.35/187.81. He beat Morris Johnson Jr. in the first round, and a 7.36/188 beat Ingersoll in round two, but he lost to Rickie Smith in the semifinals. Photo from Columbus 1989. |

Notes: Second of two 1965 race cars, this A990 car was received by the team in May 1965, raced in S/S at the NHRA Springnationals at Bristol. Dubbed 'Paper Tiger Too,' it was converted into match race trim soon after as the team's efforts and busy schedule allowed. Run primarily on gas, Sox used it as a back-up car or at events where he wanted to drive in two classes. Never acid dipped, it survived largely intact, ended up on the street in Detroit, and was found and saved by Steve Atwell and Mike Guffey. Restored, now in the collector of Todd Werner. Image is of restored car. |
