Notes: Duncan apparently ran this car in two classes -A/CC and B/CC - or he had two cars that were almost identical. At the 2-day race at Pomona on Apr. 3/4, the Duncan Doodle Bug in A Fuel Modified Coupe/Sedan won its class with 116.88 mph. At the same event, the Duncan Jitterbug in B Fuel Modified Coupe/Sedan won its class with 126.58 mph. It set a new track record in B/CC at Pomona on Dec. 12, 1954. The newspaper report identified it as Duncan No. 2. It is featured in a YouTube video ("Old School Hot Rodding") at Santa Ana in the early 1950s uploaded by Duncan's great-grandson. Notes: The Kreepin' Krips was a car club for handicapped people. The club was organized in about 1952 at the California Rehabilitation Center, treating mostly polio patients. Their first drag car was this coupe. In 1955, the club sponsored a trophy-winning '32 Ford roadster called "L'Ouragan." It was capable of running consistently over 120 mph. Myron Ort was a good friend of the younger brother of the driver of the coupe. His family lived on the same street. Myron Ort shared his memories (on 9/21/22) of watching this car being built in the early 1950s: "I lived up the street and watched the evolution of this project in the 1950s. At the time, I did not realize that the legendary Chrisman competition coupe inspired its design. I saw it go from a flathead front engine to mid-engine and then rear-engine with a Hemi, either an Olds or Chrysler. It was a beautiful car, metallic blue, chrome front axle, etc. It eventually was covered with fantastic Von Dutch pinstriping! I am wondering what happened to the car today. It should be in a museum. I saw it at the drags, too. There were three brothers. My friend, John, was the youngest. His older brothers were Bill and Dave. Their last name was Daigle, but I am not actually sure of the spelling. Bill is the one who would drive the car at the drags. The president of the club and the brains were in a wheelchair. Other members were able-bodied. The car went through many incarnations, and it had always been in the garage at their place down the street, Harper Ave. Los Angeles. When preparing to go to the drags, they tuned it up and drove around the neighborhood. It was loud! Many of the guys in the club were able-bodied, and my friend's older brother, Bill, drove it in competition. The car stayed at my friend's house down the street. I cannot remember how they spelled their name. It was something like Daigle pronounced "day-glee." They would tell me they knew Von Dutch and only needed to give him a bottle of vodka in exchange for his wonderful pinstriping. In addition to the fantastic pinstriping at the front of the car, the nose (two '40 Ford deluxe hoods welded together) was ingenious. At the time, I thought they were so ingenious, not realizing it had been inspired by the now legendary Chrisman coupe, which recently sold for over a million. The rear of the Krips car had a Von Dutch cartoon illustration of a V-8 powered hotrod wheelchair! Every time I have visited the Peterson museum in my old neighborhood, I think the Krips car should be in that museum. My family built the house on Harper Avenue in 1941 or thereabouts. My brothers and I still own that duplex, currently a rental. The "Dagli" family probably moved into the neighborhood shortly after 1950. I'm not sure if they owned or rented. They were there for many years. After high school, John Daigle (Dagli?) had a small business in Hollywood repairing electronic/audio equipment. Highland Ave? La Brea Ave? I am trying to find out what happened to this car today. Do you know any more information about this car?" With these clues, I was able to find the Degele and Ort families in the 1950 Census on Harper Avenue. I could identify some of the victories of this coupe and the driver's name. It ran at Pomona in B Fuel Modified Coupe-Sedan class. On Apr. 18, Bill Degele drove it to a class win with 111.54 mph. A week later, Bill again took a class victory with 112.54 mph. And on May 2, he won for the third straight week with 112.93 mph. Then Bill went into the Army but allowed his brother, David, to race it in the A fuel modified coupe class at Pomona on Nov. 21 for a 109.00 mph victory. The modifications that Myron Ort mentioned probably pushed him up into the higher class. Myron Ort recalled: "It was really Dave and Bill [not his friend, the younger brother, John] that were active in the car club, and often the pres[ident] was at their garage advising what to do next to get more speed. It seems like major modifications were made between every drag event at Pomona, and speeds kept improving. I remember Dave did drive it sometimes." Bill Degele died in Hawaii in 2012.
