Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Photo from the 1992 US Nationals. Jim started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #13 with a 5.06/273.22. He lucked out in round one, when Cory McClenathan had troubles and Head advanced with a 7.15/236.77. In the second round, Mike Brotherton broke and Jim advanced with a 23.26/63.76. He ran over eighteen seconds quicker in the semifinals when his 5.06/277.00 beat Pat Austin. In the final, he was up against Kenny Bernstein and despite running his best time of the meet, a 4.98/279.93 he lost to Kenny's 4.96/281. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 5.11/273.88 qualified #10. He beat McClenathan in the first round, with a 5.09/272.80. In round two his 5.14/268.25 lost to Austin's 5.08/286. Houston was NHRA's next stop for the Supernationals. Jim qualified #15 with a 5.04/279.93. He picked up to 4.99/280.46 in the first round, but it wasn't enough as he lost to eventual winner Joe Amato's 4.98/287. Jim had nothing, but problems at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals and he could only muster a best of 8.98/100.12 that obviously failed to qualify. He did not race at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.07/280.37 qualified #13. He fell off to 5.18/272.06 in the first round, that lost to Amato's 4.94/283. Memphis was NHRA's next stop for the Mid-South Nationals. Jim qualified #10 with a 5.07/279.32, but a first-round 5.23/273.30 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.09/284. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals with a best of 5.23/274.30 that was good for second alternate. Up in Canada at the end of June, he was at Sanair for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.20/279.24 qualified #11. Unfortunately, his first-round bad luck persisted and a 5.30/264.70 lost to Amato's 5.09/281. He failed to make the show at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 5.12/284.16 was the second alternate. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals or Sonoma for the California Nationals. |

Notes: Johnson started the year at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, his 4.94/288.64 best was the second alternate for the show. He did better at the NHRA Arizona National,s where his 4.91/298.01 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen car field. In the opening round, his 5.00/279.85 lost to low qualifier Cory McClenathan's 4.90/296. He then went to Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals and qualified #11 at 4.87/302.01. He lost to Shelly Anderson in the first round. Shortly after that (March 13), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.33/271.00 qualified #1. Bobby Lagana smoked the tires against him in round one, and Tommy advanced with a 5.45/264.75. He then set Low ET and a Top Speed in the semi-final with his 5.26/274.97 defeating Doug Foxworth's 5.35/269. He then went up against Jim Bailey in the final, and Bailey broke,e, so Johnson roared to a 5.27/271.00 in picking up his first IHRA victory. The following week (March 20) found the team at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 4.91/288.55 qualified #12. The competition was a lot tougher here as his 4.93/291.54 lost to Scott Kalitta's 4.85/295 in round one. The team also went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was an eight-car show, and his 4.89/292.96 qualified #6. Tommy was quick off the line in the first round and his 4.96/290.13 held on to win over Connie Kalitta's 4.93/288. But he smoked the tires in the semi-final and lost to McClenathan's 4.95/287. Atlanta turned out to be a costly race. He was then in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A great 4.88/294.88 qualified #3, and he beat Andy Woods in the first round with a 4.91/294.11. Clayton Harris fell to Johnson's 5.15/274.47 in round two. But things went to crap in the semi-final. He was racing the senior Kalitta when just as the light turned green, his rear axle housing was blown out of the dragster's frame by a tire exploding. The car barely got off the line and no one was hurt. A confused Johnson climbed out of the cockpit to see the rear axle and parts of the frame rails littered about the starting line. The car received lots of "air time" for the mishap, if nothing else. Surprisingly enough,he came back to win the next NHRA event, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. He had "only" qualified #14 with a 4.93/291.16. He then made runs of 4.88/286.44 over Jim Head,4.95/296.73 over Kenny Bernstein, and 4.77/305.08 over a tire-smoking Pat Austin. He went up against Mike Brotherton in the final and Tommy's 4.88/296 got the victory. The next NHRA race was the Mopar Parts Nationals held at Englishtown the following week. After qualifying #13 with a 4.87, he lost to Scott Kalitta in round one. Only in this sport do you go from hero to zero in one week.Back on the IHRA trail, he went to Bristol in the first week of June for the Springnationals. His 5.07/287.63 qualified #1 and a 5.15/282 beat Randy Myer in the first round. He then set Low ET and Top Speed with a 5.05/289.66 (track record speed) to defeat Rhonda Hartman in the semi-final. He faced Jim Bailey, and all the money was on Johnson to win as his times had been much better than Bailey's.But in the final, Tommy had problems and shut down to 5.72/169.39 in a runner-up finish to Jim's 5.33/242.110 IHRA. Confirmed best times at Topeka Spring at 4.772/306.64. Fourteenth member of the Slick 50 300 MPH Club on March 5, 1994, with a 302.01 at Houston. |

Notes: Dal was driving the Firebird at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #14 with a 5.883/236.90. Mark Oswald beat him in round one, 5.59/264 to 6.055/183.56. He also ran 5.96 at 245 at IHRA St. Louis 1990, then was the first alternate at Denver at 6.258/215.31. He ran a great 5.637/257.14 to qualify #15 at Ennis Fall but fouled against Jim White in round one, tossing out a 5.607/253.95. That was Dal's last NHRA event of the year. |

Notes: It had been ten years since a Mopar had won in Pro Stock. Not since Bob Glidden had won the season-ending World Finals in his Arrow in '79. The Dodge Division hadn't won since 1971 when Mike Fons won the World Finals in a Challenger. So it was good to see a Dodge back in competition in NHRA Pro Stock racing with this Alderman-driven Daytona. The season didn't start so well when the team failed to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals, but things got much better at the Supernationals at Houston where Darrell ran a 7.34 to qualify #7. He improved to a 7.31 in the first round, that beat Don Coonce, but in round two he fouled against Morris Johnson Jr. Alderman got his first ever NHRA win at the next event, the Gatornationals. He qualified #3 with a 7.34/187.51. He beat Kenny Delco and Reid Whisnant in the first two rounds before coming up against Glidden in the semifinals. In that race, both cars recorded 7.38's, but the Dodge got the win putting him in the final against Frank Iaconio. Darrell used a slight holeshot to take his win with a 7.39/186.25 beating Frank's 7.38/186. At the fourth event of the season, the Southern Nationals, a 7.41/185.98 qualified #8. He beat Mark Pawuk in the first round, but a 7.49/184.69 lost to Bruce Allen's 7.42/185 in round two. At Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals, Alderman ran 7.38/187.65 to qualify #11. A first-round 7.40 beat Whisnant and a 7.38/187 beat Don Beverley in round two. Unfortunately, he lost to Glidden in the semifinal. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 7.45/184.91 qualified #7, but he was upset in the first round, by Joe Folgore. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals on May 21. Alderman qualified well and he beat Jerry Haas in the first round, with a 7.50/183.22. In round two, he beat Mark Pawuk with a 7.53/182.91 and a semifinal 7.54/182.16 beat low qualifier Larry Morgan's quicker 7.49/184. In the final, he met Warren Johnson. Alderman ran a 7.56/181.32 that finished runner up to WJ's 7.50/184. The NHRA Springnationals wasn't a good race for the teams as Alderman's best of 7.45/183.71 failed to qualify (first alternate). Things went better at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada where a 7.44/185.07 qualified #11. A first-round 7.43/184.64 beat WJ's right there 7.43/184. In the second round, a 7.49/184.12 lost to Rickie Smith's 7.48/183. Darrell when to Milan International in Michigan for the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 2. He ran well, beating Larry Morgan's Oldsmobile in round two before losing to Smith in the semifinal. The following week (July 9), he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.38/187.57 and lasted until the second round before losing to Ken Koretsky. The next NHRA race was the Mile High Nationals in Denver in July. A 7.87/174.99 qualified #7 in the all seven second field. He beat Coonce in the first round, but in round two, Bruce Allen out drove him running a 7.87/175 to win over Alderman's quicker 7.85/175. At Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals, Darrell qualified #6 with a 7.36/187.30. A first-round 7.39/186.72 beat Gary Herman, but once again he lost in the second round when his 7.44/186.64 lost to Jerry Eckman's 7.45/185. Seattle International was NHRA's next stop for the Seafair Nationals. The Dodge ran a 7.38/187.38 to qualify in the dreaded #9 spot. He faced low qualifier Beverley in the first round, and both ran 7.39's with Darrell coming out on top. After losing in the second round to holeshots at the last two events, Alderman jumped the gun in round two and fouled away a 7.41 against Glidden who ran a 7.40/185 to win. | Photo from 1989 Gatornationals. |

Notes: Rettell's 6.19/222.44 qualified #13 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He improved to 6.09/226.30 in the first round to beat Stan Sipos. In round two, his 6.13/224.49 dropped Ron Scott's better-but-later 6.07/231. He got a bit of luck on his side in the semi-final, where low qualifier Pat Austin crossed the centerline against him and was disqualified. Gary's 6.22/190.59 advanced. He faced Bob Newberry in the final and ran a 6.13/226.30, but Newberry was long gone for the win with a 6.00/231. Shortly after that (April 8), he was at Rockingham for the NHRA Division Two race. A 6.06/227.15 qualified #3. In round one, his 6.11/223.54 lost to Frank Madden's 6.14/226. In May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 6.17/226.13 qualified #7. His opponent, Steve Fox, broke in the first round, so Gary made a 6.20/226.98 solo to advance. In round two, his 6.12/227.50 lost to low qualifier Austin's 6.11/231. He scored a victory at Bristol the following week at the IHRA Springnationals. He stopped a tire-shaking Newberry in the final. In the first week of June, he was one of just four drivers that showed up at Moroso Motorsports Park for the NHRA Division Two race. His 6.34/212.26 qualified #1, but he was upset in the first round. Greg Moss got out on him, and his 6.36/217 held off Rettell's Low ET effort of 6.30 at 218.44. Gary was at the Texas Motorplex in October for the NHRA Chief Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.97/236.84 (Top Speed). In the opening round, his 6.01/232.73 beat Pete Duhart. In the second round, his 6.03/235.10 fell to Dave Sebring's 6.01/231.
