Notes: Roland got the sponsor, but no money ever changed hands. That is why Roland parked the car after this race. The team switched between two beautiful bodies on this car in '93: a purple one and the aqua, blue one pictured here at Columbus 1993. One half of the quickest side-by-side race in history at Houston Slick 50 Nats with John Force, Gordie 5.131, and Force 5.156. This team made its NHRA debut at the Supernationals. Car owner Roland Leong turned the wrenches over to Leonard Hughes, and he hired "240 MPH" Gordie Bonin to drive. Things started slowly when they failed to qualify at Houston, but things went much better at the NHRA Gatornationals. Bonin qualified #9 with a 5.36/286.35. He improved to 5.28/281.86 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Chuck Etchells' 5.21/274. NHRA's next event was the non-points Winston Invitational at Rockingham. A 5.37/276.32 qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and in round one, his 5.42/268.01 advanced when Etchells broke. In the semifinals, Gordie had a bit more luck when Wyatt Radke broke against him, and his 5.33/237.34 advanced into the final. There he met Al Hofmann, and this time Bonin had problems and slowed to a 10.14/80.97 while Al got the victory with a 5.18/288. The team really picked up the pace at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where Gordie's 5.14/286.53 qualified #3. Unfortunately, the throttle linkage broke in the first round, and his 6.58/134.60 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.72/195. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. A 5.30/282.22 qualified #5. Bonin picked up to a 5.23/279.76 in the first round to beat Jim Epler, and in round two, his 5.26/285.89 got around Etchells close 5.27/274. In the semifinals, Bonin slowed to 5.53/242.71, which lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.27/284. At Englishtown for the Mopar Parts Nationals, a great 5.08 at 285.80 qualified #3. He beat Gordon Mineo in round one, with a 5.23/277.60, but in the second round, he lost to Hoover. It had been twelve years since Bonin's last NHRA victory, but at the Springnationals, he got another. In qualifying, a 5.23/289.48 (Top Speed) had placed him #4 on the grid. A first-round 5.27/282.39 took out Gary Densham, while in round two, his 5.24/288.73 beat Hofmann's 5.25/281 in a close one. Bonin had to do a bit of driving in the semifinals as his 5.31/284.90 beat Radke's slightly quicker 5.30/278. He beat Mineo in the final with a 5.60/194.34. He almost made it two in a row when he reached the final at the next NHRA race, the Western Nationals. There he qualified #2 with a 5.27/282.75. A first-round 5.40/280.46 beat Densham. He lost a blower belt in round two, and the car slowed to 6.48/144.92, but it was still enough to beat a tire-smoking Hoover who registered a 9.80 in losing. Gordie had a close semifinal race with Cruz Pedregon, where his 5.37/271.98 narrowly beat Pedregon's 5.39/268. This set up a final-round meeting with Force. This was Force's race as he qualified #1, set Low ET and Top Speed, and in the final, his 5.25/283 got the victory over Bonin's troubled, shut off 9.97/82.16. Another final round appearance came at the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver. Hughes tuned the car to a 5.45/259.44 in qualifying #4 in the thin air. Bonin made his way to the finals by stopping Jerry Caminito in the first round, with a 5.52/265.33 and a second-round 5.45/273.55 beat Bruce Nilson. Etchells smoked his tires against him in the semifinals, and Bonin's 5.60/240.96 got him into the final. He faced Pedregon, and Gordie's 5.71/253.23 was no match for Cruz at 5.48/263. After all those good runs, Sonoma was a bit of a disappointment. The team qualified #8 for the NHRA California Nationals with a 5.35/281.51, but Hofmann beat them in the first round. |

Notes: Caminito made the switch from Dodge bodied cars to Oldsmobile for '89. Jerry qualified on the "bump" at the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.56/248.07. He lost to Chuck Etchells in the first round. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals in June. A 5.66/252.66 qualified #13, but another 5.66/255.82 in the first round, lost to Tom Hoover's 5.57/251. He then went to Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 2. Jerry qualified for the eight-car show and then beat Art Hendey in the first round. In the semifinals, his 5.75/238.65 advanced when Tom McEwen broke. In the final, he met Doc Halladay. Both cars had problems, but Caminito's tire-smoking 6.56/155.24 won out over Doc's 8.98/95. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.485, but he lost to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round. That was his best NHRA national event ET of the year. He qualified for the show at Indy with a 5.529/261.24, his best speed of the year. 1986 McKinney chassis. Photo from Columbus 1989. Did this car run 5.45 in 1989? |

Notes: Gary qualified #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.337/276.49. Unfortunately, the car broke in the first round against eventual winner K.C. Spurlock. He went to Arizona for the NHRA Quality Care Nationals but was the second alternate with a 5.704/253.02 best. He qualified #10 at Houston Spring at 5.286/279.24 and went to the semifinals. Gary qualified #15 at the Gators at 5.322/272.47 but lost to John Force in round one. He qualified #14 at Atlanta at 5.361/252.31 and went two rounds. Gary qualified #11 at Atlanta at 5.360/280.46 and improved to 5.344/280.11 in a round one win over Gary Bolger. He beat Jim Epler in round two with a 5.472/274.72 before losing round three to Gordie Bonin. Gary qualified #12 at the Mopar Parts Nationals at 5.328 but lost in round one. He also qualified #12 at Columbus (5.366/274.72) and lost in round one, again. He ran 5.374/272.14 in qualifying #11 at Topeka but lost to Kenji Okazaki in round one. Gary also had similar results at Bandimere (5.749/246.44) and Sonoma (5.359/270.59). He ran 5.285/272.97 to qualify #14 at Seattle, but his round one losses continued. But Gary went all the way to the finals at Brainerd in August, losing to John Force there with best times of 5.335/277.94. He was a disappointing DNQ at Indy (5.641/207.37) but ran 5.317/275.31 at Maple Grove to qualify #9. Gary Bolger got a measure of revenge with a first-round win. He went 5.270/283.01 (#10) at Topeka Fall but did not get past round one again. The same thing happened at the Chief Auto Parts Nationals, although Gary went 5.258 to qualify. He also made the field at the World Finals with a 5.281/282.48 but fell in round one, again. All year, it was a gutsy performance as the independent mixed it up with the big boys. |

Notes: Scott used a 5.40/279.06 to qualify #6 at Pomona for the Winternationals. A first-round 5.78/218.44 lost to Art Hendey's 5.54/260. He broke through with his first-ever NHRA national event win at the Supernationals on March 5, defeating Bruce Larson in the final. He qualified #6 with a 5.32 and set Top Speed at 279.58. Scott was one of 21 Funny Car drivers at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals attempting to qualify for the eight-car field. It was a tough weekend for Scott as he had used up two engines in qualifying. He qualified #4 and then beat R.C. Sherman in round one, with a 5.69/256.71. He defeated a blower-popping Ed McCulloch in the semifinal with a 5.85/241.65. Still, it cost him another engine, and Kalitta never showed up for his race against Tony McCallum in the final. The following weekend (May 29), he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.57 qualified #8. He lasted until round two before smoking the tires and losing to John Martin. The next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Sprignationals. His 5.50/272.97 qualified #11. In round one, his 5.59/240.32 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.33/272. His best times were a 5.281 at Ennis Fall and 279.58 (Top Speed) at Houston Spring. Photo from Columbus 1989. |

Notes: Tony had a great NHRA season, qualifying nearly everywhere and running some stout numbers. He drove a Thunderbird through Columbus, where a blower explosion destroyed that body. Was the Daytona just a new body? It probably debuted at Englishtown, where Tony qualified with a 5.429/243.27 and lost to Don Prudhomme in round one. | At the IHRA Loctite Nationwise World Nationals in Norwalk, McCallum qualified #4 for the 8 car field with a 5.568/238.73 & Faced #5 qualifier Doc Halladay in Round 1 where McCallum would lose. | Tony died in a car crash (later this year?) Notes: Ed was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.48/272.14 qualified #7. He beat Mark Oswald in the first round, with a 5.50/274.55 and a second-round 5.45/273.63 beat Jim White's 5.50/272 in the "Hawaiian." But in the semifinals, his 5.41/273.22 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.31/272. He qualified #3 with a 5.33/274.64 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, and an opening-round 5.27/282.57 stopped Jim Murphy. But he smoked the tires in round two and lost to Del Worsham. He ran really well at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. A 5.28/282.39 qualified #3, and he beat Gary Densham in round one. In round two, Mike Dunn's 5.46/251 lost to Ed's 5.30/278.29. He fell off to 5.40/276.32 in the semifinals, but it was still enough to beat Oswald. He faced Force in the final for the money. Unfortunately, McCulloch smoked the tires and shut off to 6.11/159.37 while John picked up the win with a 5.21/278. Ed continued to qualify well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There, a 5.29/272.06 got the #3 spot. He beat Gary Bolger in round one, with a 5.40/270.43, but he lost to Tom Hoover in the second round. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Once again, Ed qualified #3, this time with a 5.31/276.24. He beat Freddie Neely in round one before smoking the tires and losing to White in round two. At Memphis, for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Ed slipped to #4 in qualifying with a 5.32/276.07. In the first round, Paula Martin lost an engine against him, and Ed advanced with a 5.54/256.70. A second round 5.52/267.77 beat Al Hofmann. But 5.5s were not going to get the job done, and, in the semifinal, Ed's 5.56/273.05 lost to Hoover's 5.48. The seventh race of the season was the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. McCulloch returned to his #3 qualifying spot with a 5.34/272.06. He beat Murphy in round one, with a 5.48/271.73, but a round two 5.41/259.44 lost to Force's 5.35/267. He followed the tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he "only" qualified #7 with a 5.48/265.01. In the opening round, he beat Martin's 5.69/245 with a 5.57/258.69, but he lost to eventual winner White in round two. He then made a stop at Kansas City International for its Summernationals. Ed set Low ET there at 5.62, and he reached the final against Force. The two had a good race, but John's 5.68/261 beat Ed's late leaving 5.65/257.50. Back on the NHRA trail at Englishtown for the Summernationals. McCulloch ran 5.26/271.82 to qualify #4. He stopped Martin again in round one, with a 5.40/266.58. But a second-round 5.47/263.08 lost to Worsham's 5.34/272. Worsham would go on to win the race. McCulloch was way overdue for a win. It almost came at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.43. His speed on the run was 257.80. He beat rookie Len Seroka in round one, with a 5.82/252.31, and a second-round 5.55/256.19 beat Densham's 5.69/218. In the semifinals, his 5.59/257.14 trailered Hofmann at 5.76/253. This put Ed in his second NHRA final of the year. He faced Mike Dunn, who had been running just about a tenth quicker than Ed was throughout eliminations. Sure enough, Mike's 5.47/257 got the victory over Ed, who tried to make up the difference and fouled away a 5.54/255.82. Ed's best NHRA times were 5.237 from Maple Grove and the 282.57 from Phoenix. |

Notes: Gordon was at Pomona for the season-opening NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 5.44/272.72 to qualify #15. He lost to Cruz Pedregon in the first round. Mineo skipped the second NHRA event of the season, the Arizona Nationals, but he was back on tour at Houston for the Supernationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.31/282.57 and a first-round 5.33/276.92, taking out Gary Clapshaw's 5.37/267. In the second round, a 5.37/248.41 advanced over Jerry Caminito. In the semifinal, his 5.34/250.20 beat Tom Hoover's off pace 5.78/183. In the final, he faced another first-time finalist in Cruz Pedregon. Unfortunately, Gordon had problems and shut off to a 17.43/54.59 loss to Pedregon's 5.14/284. The next NHRA event was the Gatornationals on March 22. A 5.38/283.37 qualified #10, but Mark Oswald's 5.24/283 in the first round beat his 5.40/252.52. Atlanta was the next stop for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Once again, Gordon had little trouble qualifying, running a 5.31/246.64 for the #7 spot. In the first round, his 5.42/209.71 fell to Paul Smith's 5.33/236. At Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Mineo opened some eyes when he qualified #3 with a 5.31/283.55 (Top Speed). He improved to a Low ET of the meet 5.24 at 259.59 in the first round while beating Gary Litton. In the second round, he slowed to a 5.46/266.19 that lost to John Force's 5.43/271. He qualified #5 with a 5.32/280.46 at the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.43/268.97 got past Gary Bolger in the first round, but in round two, he fouled away a 5.48/272.31 against Hofmann's 5.31/274. Mineo did not follow the tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, but he was at Englishtown for NHRA's ninth race of the season, the Summernationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.25/284.36 and a first-round 5.34/262.31 beat Caminito, but he was again stopped in round two. This time Chuck Etchells got him with a 5.25/277 beating Mineo's 5.44/236.65. Gordon had a great year with 5.20s at 280 plus at many events, including best times of 5.172 at the Finals and 285.35 at Indy. He was runner up at the 1992 Houston Supernationals and the low qualifier at Sonoma in 1992. |

Notes: Tharp was at the Texas Motorplex in April for the IHRA Texas Nationals. His 5.80/242.45 qualified #14, but he lost to Mike Dunn in the first round, of competition. On May 15, he was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. There, his 5.61 qualified #6, but he lost to R.C. Sherman in the opening round. Photo from Columbus 1988. Richard drove the 'Max for most of the NHRA season, although Ronny Young took over at the World Finals. Richard's best NHRA times were a 5.569 in eliminations at Seattle and 259.94 in a second alternate effort at Columbus. Where did Richard run 5.40/270? We may need to remove those times. |
