Notes: Also ran 6.69 at Opelousas. | Raymond Godman and driver Preston Davis had a very successful year in '69. At the NHRA Southeastern Division Opener at Phenix, Preston ran well. A track record 7.00 qualified #1 and in round one, he beat Ken Kelly with a 7.48/213.28. In the semifinals, he got the "odd-lot" solo and ran a motor saving 8.85/105.63. In the final he raced Dave Chenevert. Dave was also running well and his 7.26/217 in the final deprived Davis' 7.44/214.78 of the victory. He won over a sixteen-car field at LaPlace on May 4 for a Pro Circuit race. Davis set Top Speed at 215.82 and in the semifinals, he got back at Chenevert by beating him with a 7.15. A 7.20/199.10 in the final got him the victory. Another victory came at the Pro Circuit race at Oklahoma City on May 18. There he qualified #4 in the eight-car field. A 7.47 in the first round, beat Norm Gingrass while in the semifinals, his 7.40 beat Vance Hunt's much better 7.24. In the final, he laid down a 7.35/203.22 to beat Larry Brown in the Boyd-Brown car. |

Notes: Won NHRA Division 3 in 1969. Won the AHRA Winternationals and Springnationals, and was runner-up at the AHRA US Open and World Points Finale. Photo from 1969 World Finals in Dallas. Also 6.55/220.04 at Smokers Meet, NY National 1969. Ran 222.77 at NHRA Indianapolis 69. | Goldstein had a great season in the "Ramchargers" Top Fuel dragster in '69. It started with a win at the AHRA Winternationals. In the 32 car show he had beaten Vern Anderson, Bennie Osborn, Ron Goodsell, and in the semifinals, he soloed when Chris Karamesines was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. In the final, he beat Cliff Zink with Low ET and a track record 6.89. At Pomona for NHRA's version of the Winternationals, Leroy qualified #3 with a 6.98/214.34. In the first round Dennis Baca fouled against him and Goldstein advanced to round two with a 7.10. In round two, Connie Kalitta was unable to repair his Boss 429 powered car and Leroy ran another single, this time, a 7.30. In round three he slowed down a tenth to a 7.40, but still advanced over a tire-smoking Jerry Ruth. But in the semifinals, he got oil on the tires and slowed to an 8.01/136 letting John Mulligan's 6.93/217 advance to the final. In March they were at Riverside for the HRM Championships. Leroy qualified #10 in the 32 car field with a 7.01. In the first round, his 7.29/207.86 lost to Jeep Hampshire's 7.18/223. Goldstein didn't do so well at National Trail on May 4 where he faced Don Cook in a best of three match race. He broke in the first race and then fouled in the next two races to lose the match three straight. Another win came at Bristol on June 8 for the AHRA Springnationals. In the first round, a 7.05 advanced when Zink fouled. In the second round, Leroy's 6.97 narrowly beat a blower popping Don Cook. In the semifinal, a 6.91 beat Karamesines' 7.24. In the final, he met the "Snake" Don Prudhomme. Goldstein pounded out a strong 6.80/217.38 (Top Speed) for the win. The following week (June 15) with he was at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.73/217.91 qualified #2. In the first round, he beat Gary Cochran with a 6.79/216.34. But in round two he lost fire on the line giving the eventual winner Hank Westmoreland, a single into round three. On June 22 he faced off against Dwight Salisbury in a best two out of three match race at LaPlace. Dwight pulled a huge holeshot in the first race and won with a 7.01/210 to Goldstein's much better 6.89/212.26. Leroy won the next race with a 6.86/211.26 when Dwight fouled, and another 6.86/219.85 (track speed record) won the match when the "Beach Boys" car lost fire on the line. At New York for the "Smoker's Meet" on June 29, Goldstein finished runner-up to Don Garlits. The "Ramchargers" car had been strong in eliminations, running a 6.73/213.76 in the first round, and a 6.61/217.90 single in round three. In the semifinal, he beat Fred Forkner with a 6.60/217. In the final against Garlits, he ran 6.55 (Low ET) at 220.04, but still lost to Garlits' 6.70/228. On July 4 the "Ramchargers" were at Martin, Michigan, for an eight-car show. There were two eight-car fields on dragsters racing, the UDRA Circuit and an All-Star Top Fuel race. Leroy won his first-round race over Ron Rivero with a 6.95, but in the semifinal against Dave Powers, he fouled away a 6.96/203. On July 13 Goldstein won the NHRA Division 3 race at Indianapolis. He set Low ET at 6.60 and beat Mulligan in the final. |

Notes: Arne Roberts body with covered roll cage. Kent Fuller built it for himself in 1963, but when Jeep crashed at Fresno in late '63, Kent sold his car to the team. This car is on everybody's short list of most beautiful dragsters ever. Third qualifier at 64 March Meet at 7.97/189.06. Car was featured in the movie Bikini Beach. The 7.60/204 numbers need to be confirmed. Seem very quick. |

Notes: Last of the weed burners. Used a hearse to tow and push. Confirmed 8.08 at Bakersfield 3/64. There is a question about the chassis builder. We need confirmation. | On January 12, Red Lang was at Pomona for a scheduled match race against Don Moody. The two were supposed to race the previous week, but the weather failed to cooperate. Moody failed to show, so Lang ran a solo 8.25/185.18 and then raced Jeep Hampshire "just for kicks" and his 8.32/185.56 lost to Hampshire's 7.94/192. Red was at Dragway 42 in West Salem for a best of three match against Joe Schubeck on August 16. He ran a fouling 9.49/184.80 in the first race that lost to Joe's engine blowing 8.41/176. Schubeck was out after that, so Al MacInerney offered to race Lang with his little 289 Ford powered dragster. Red won the next race with an 8.42/185.18 over Al's 8.64/171. In the last race, Lang ran 8.14/190.66 for the match race victory. At this match he was using a 354 Hemi. |

Notes: Tom was driving for Ed Donovan on June 14 at Lions for the UDRA Fueler race. It was an eight-car field and Tom qualified #7 with an 8.42. He picked up to 8.20/185.18 in the first round, to beat Don Moody's quicker 8.17/190. An easy 8.34 advanced in the semifinals when Frank Cannon was unable to run after blowing his engine in the first round. In the final, McEwen was to face James Warren's little Chevy. Unfortunately, the Chevy lost fire and Tom singled for the win with an 8.46/179.28. |

Notes: All new chassis. Finished second in Divison 6. Info from National Dragster, 10/29/71. | Herm qualified seventh with a 7.03/213.76 at Bremerton on June 1 for a Division 6 race. Dan Higgins beat him in the first round. He then went to Seattle for the Travelon's Fuel Championships on June 8. His first-round opponent fouled against him and in the semifinals, his 6.99/224.42 (Top Speed and track record) beat Dick Kalivoda. In the final, a 6.96/222.42 failed to beat Jerry Ruth's 6.87/221. He set Top Speed again, this time at 217.39, at the third Division 6 race at Mission City, BC. Ron Rolstad fouled against him in the opening round, but he lost to Hank Johnson in the semis. The stars aligned on July 27 for the fourth Division 6 race where he beat low qualifier Dwight Salisbury with a holeshot win in the first round; his 7.12/215.82 beat Dwight's quicker 7.08/220. Herm went on to win with a 7.14/210.76 beating Jerry Ruth in the final. At the final Division 6 race at Seattle on August 24, Ruth got pay-back with a first-round 6.88/226 drubbing of Herm's 7.68/213.28. |

Notes: Had Top Fuel Record for 2 Years. Won Division 1 69/70. The photo is the '68 car; the '69 car was longer. Ran 6.50s at Indy, but lost in semis. | Raley was at the Gainesville Opener on February 16. It was an eight-car show and he won the show with a final round 7.19/223.88 over Dave Chenevert. He was at Miami-Hollywood for the Miami Winter Championships, and although he failed to win he gave a good account of himself, qualifying third with a 7.35. Raley set Low ET at 6.94 on the way to winning the NHRA Division 1 race at York US 30. He beat Larry Bucher in the final with a 7.02/206. Another Division 1 victory came at Budds Creek in June. Raley set Low ET and Top Speed when he beat Carey Jones in the first round, with a 6.99/212.26. He soloed to the win with a 7.12/206.88 when Marvin Schwartz shut off with no oil pressure in the final. He continued to run strong in Division 1 when they ran at Maple Grove. He qualified #1 with a 6.92/214.78 (Low ET & Top Speed). A first-round 7.07/210.76 advanced when Will Zack lost fire on the line. In the semifinals, a 7.06/210.76 beat Joe Jacono's better 6.95/204. In the final, he again showed his driving ability when he beat Bucher's 7.00/193 with a 7.11/211.76. Tom was real strong at Indy for the US Nationals, but you wouldn't have known it during qualifying. He qualified #18 in the 32 car show with a 6.69/223.58, but in the first round, he stepped up to a 6.59/209.37 over Norman Gingrass' 6.69/219. He ran an easy solo (7.45) in round two. In the third round, he and Steve Carbone had a good race with Raley's 6.51 stopping Carbone's 6.54. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Don Prudhomme. National Trail hosted the first Annual National Dragster Invitationals on October 4. Tom was there running strong. It was an eight-car event and in round one, Raley's 6.84/221.26 beat Darryl Hunt. In the semifinals, a 6.87/208.32 advanced when Chuck Kurzawa fouled. In the final he ran a strong 6.83/214.28, but unfortunately, he fouled, giving the win to Al Goodman's 7.04. At the NHRA World Finals at Dallas on October 26, Tom qualified #13 in the 16-car field with a 6.86/205.01. He advanced past the first-round with a 7.25 when John Wiebe fouled. He lost to Chenevert's 6.78/215 in round two with a 7.01/199.55. |

Notes: World's quickest Olds, Safford-Gaide-Ratican. Set Top Speed at 1964 NHRA Winternationals at 195.22 mph. 1964 NHRA Winternationals entry list shows A/FD. Also ran 8.13/191.88 at Bakersfield 3/64. | This big, bad Oldsmobile gave the Hemis a hard time early in the year. Started the season by winning at Fontana on January 1. He ran a best of 7.99/193.96 on his way to the final where his 8.10/188.28 got the victory over Mike Snively. He was at Pomona on January 12 for an eight-car show. He reached the final by running 8.13/180.00 and 8.10/191.48. He faced Bill Alexander in the final and even though Safford had been running quicker throughout eliminations, he got anxious and fouled away a potentially winning 8.15/181.80 while Alexander ran 8.25/191 for the victory. As mentioned, he showed his Olds top end horsepower by setting Top Speed at the NHRA Winternationals. He had one of only two non-Chryslers to qualify for the race (James Warren's Chevy was the other). He was at Fremont on March 15 for the West Coast Championships, but he lost to Denny Miliani in the first round. On April 18, Safford was at Lions for an eight-car show and in round one, his 8.40/189.46 beat Chuck Griffith, but he lost in the semifinals. The Oldsmobile powered car was having a harder and harder time keeping pace with the Hemis as the year went on, but it was still competitive. Pomona held a twelve car show on April 26 and Ken's first-round 8.07/189.46 beat Goob Tuller, but an 8.25/189.06 lost to eventual winner Frank Cannon's 8.03/199. |

Notes: Photo from 1969 World Finals, Dallas, Tex. Confirmed 6.629/221.67 from NHRA US Nationals 9/69. | John was at Lions on February 9 for an eight-car show, but he had problems and his best of 7.79 failed to qualify. Wiebe won a sixteen-car show at Continental Divide Raceway on April 13. He ran 7.54 and 7.51 in the first two rounds before stepping it up to a 7.47 (Low ET) at 191.88 over Joe McKee's 7.66/183 in the semifinal. In the final he copped Top Speed of the meet as well with a 7.62/213.28 beating Doc Halladay's 7.89/207. Another win came at the Division 5 opener at Omaha Dragway on May 4, where he set Low ET in the first round, at 7.16 on his way to the final where a 7.22/198.22 beat Bud Dabler. Another win came at the AHRA Southern Nationals in Memphis on May 31. A final 6.95/221.46 won him that title. He qualified seventh at the NHRA Springnationals at Dallas with a 6.80/231.36 (Top Speed). He beat Tom McEwen in round one, with a 6.90/225.56, but he fouled against George Cox in round two. It was back into the winner's circle the following week on June 21 at Donnybrooke Speedway for the Division 5 race. Halladay fouled against him in the first round, and John ran an easy 7.39/163.93. In the semifinal, a 7.03/218.54 (Top Speed) beat Bob Stuart who got crossed up. He ran a single at 6.90/218.46 for the win when Norm Gingrass had blown his motor while winning his semifinal race and was unable to repair in time for the final. 15 cars showed up for the eight available positions at Oklahoma City on July 5. Wiebe not only qualified, but he made it into the final. A first-round 7.12 beat Jimmy Nix and another 7.12/201.34 beat Larry Brown in the semifinals. In the final, Wiebe's 7.14/221.12 lost to upstart Kenny Bernstein's slower 7.16 in Prentiss Cunningham's car. He suffered a rare first-round loss on July 13 at the fourth Division 5 race at Thunder Road Dragway in Denver. Mike Snively's 7.20/207 beat John's 7.35/198.66. |

Notes: Won PHR Top Fuel 1969. Also 6.88 at Bakersfield March Meet 3/69 and 6.99 at Riverside Hot Rod Magazine Championship. | Steve lost to Bennie Osborn in the first round, at the AHRA Winternationals and then traveled to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where the team failed to qualify. They did much better on February 9 when a 6.94 qualified second at OCIR's second All-Pro race. 35 cars tried to get into the eight-car show. An easy 7.94 advanced when Jeep Hampshire fouled in the first round, and Osborn did likewise in the semifinal, putting Steve in the final. Larry Dixon's 7.24/220 beat his 7.52/216.34 in the final giving the team runner-up money. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a first-round 6.94/218.66 beat a tire-smoking Don Garlits. In round two, John Mulligan lost a blower advancing Steve into the third round where he was to face Dwight Salisbury, Dwight had won his second round race, but had also lost a blower and was unable to repair in time so Steve singled into the semifinal where Dave Babler's 6.96/213 nipped Carbone's 6.96/220.04. On March 16, a 6.99 qualified seventh at the HRM Championships. James Warren fouled against him in the first round, and in the second a 6.80 (Low ET) at 218.97 beat Hank Clark. In round three, another strong run at 6.81/218.97 beat an ailing Stan Shiroma. In the semis he met Don Prudhomme and Don's 7.16/220 was no match for Steve's 6.82/220.58. In the final, he went up in smoke and lost to Dixon's 7.23/205. Another strong run came on March 29, at the final OCIR All-Pro race. A 6.94/206.88 qualified second, and a first-round 6.95/218.44 that beat Dixon's 7.15/203 felt good. He beat Kelly Brown in the semis before meeting Prudhomme in the final. Once again Steve took runner-up honors as the Snake beat him in the final. The next day (March 30), a 7.39 qualified sixth at the Sacramento Top Fuel Championships, but Gary Ormsby's 7.29 beat his off pace 7.60 in the first round. On April 20, NHRA held a South Central Pro Fuel Dragster Circuit race at Amarillo. It was an eight-car show and Steve ran 7.08 over Bryan Teal in the first round, and in the semifinal, Jimmy Nix fouled against him. In the final, he set a 6.99 track record while beating Junior Collins for all the marbles. At the LaPlace Division 4 race on April 27, Steve lost to Dan Rightsell in the first round. The team had an interesting day on May 11 at Tulsa for the second Division 4 race. In qualifying, Steve pulled a gigantic wheelstand that damaged the front end and wrecked the body of their dragster. The team thrashed and repaired the car, running a 7.02 to qualify first. Steve went on to beat Bennie Osborn in the final with a track record 6.87. At the third Division 4 race on May 18 at Corpus Christi, he won his first-round race over Floyd Head, but he slept against Pete Robinson in round two. Pete's 7.42 beat Steve's much quicker 7.24. The team ran well at US 131 Martin, Mich., for a UDRA race on May 30. A first-round 6.89/203.46 beat Jim Lutz and a 6.92/215.20 beat Ron Colson's 6.96/214. But he shut off just a little too early in the semifinals letting Don Cook's 6.87/216 get past his 6.90/197.36. On June 8, the team was at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. Carbone qualified #1 with a 6.79, but smoked the tires to a 7.31 first-round loss to Prudhomme's 6.96. A week later (June 15) they went to Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. A best of 6.98/201.79 failed to make the 32 car show. The team rebounded by winning the Cecil County East-West meet the following week on June 21. It was an eight-car show. It didn't start so well when Steve fouled in the first round, but his opponent Bub Reese got off the track and was disqualified. Carbone was reinstated and made the best of it by running a 6.94/201.78 over a fouling Tom McEwen in the semifinal. In the final, he faced John Mulligan. Carbone set a track record 6.67 to win the event over a motor blowing Mulligan at 8.85/92. |
