Notes: Walt qualified second at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.64/198.67 behind Mark Pieri's 7.57/201. Another 7.64 at 198.23 in the opening round beat Mike Snively's 7.70/193. In the second round, he fouled against Cliff Smith. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 at the Bakersfield March Meet. He then ran 7.45/200 in the first round over Jack Jones, and in round two, his 7.49/198.23 defeated Don Hampton. Rhoades got an easy pass in the semifinal, where Walt Stevens fouled against him. He faced Don Enriquez in the final, and there was no stopping the "Gas House Gang" as his 7.47/201.84 (Top Speed) got the victory. Shortly after that (March 16), he was at Riverside for the HRM Championships. This was an eight-car field, and his 7.75/200.00 (Top Speed) qualified #4. Art LaColst fouled against him in round one, and Walt advanced with a 7.97/156.52. In the semifinal, he and Jones had a great race that saw both drivers run 7.64 (Rhoades at 197.80), but Jack got the "win" light. He was at OCIR on May 10 for an eight-car show. A 7.65 qualified #4, and in round one, he ran 7.89/158.73 to advance when Norm Wilcox fouled. In the semifinal, Dick Rosberg's late 7.72/198 fell to his 7.74/198.66. He faced Jones in the final, and Jack caught an excellent light, and his 7.64/195 beat Walt's better 7.61/200. He also ran 7.65 at the Springnats in Dallas and 7.59/195.22 at the Indy Nationals. |

Notes: Don was at Riverside in mid-March for the HRM Championships. The car was run in Super eliminator, and his 7.73 qualified #3 for the class. His 7.84/196.93 won in round one, but he fouled in the second round. He won over an eight-car field at Lions on April 26. There, his 7.68 qualified second behind Billy Tidwell's 7.66. In the first round, his 7.83/186.33 easily advanced. He picked up to 7.63/200.44 in the semifinal to drop Bob Downey's 7.69/188. He faced Jimmy Ige in the final, and Enriquez ran 7.58/198.67 for the victory over Ige's 7.62/186. On May 10, OCIR held an eight-car show. Don qualified #1 with a 7.67/176.47. He made runs of 7.57/196.50 and a track record 7.50 at 190.66 to beat Fred Kraemer and Ed Allen to advance into the final. A final round 7.57/194.80 beat Downey's 8.18/158 for the money. He won over another eight-car field at Lions on May 31. There he "only" qualified #3 with a 7.78. He had to out-drive Ted Thurber in the first round, as his 7.96/193.96 beat Ted's quicker 7.91/194. Gene Adams must have flipped the switch in the semifinals as Enriquez picked up to a 7.60 (Low ET) at 194.80 to drop Tidwell's 7.70/193. Another 7.60/194.80 in the final took out Downey at 7.79/181. He also won the PDA Championships held at OCIR on July 19. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 7.47 qualified #1. In round one, he beat Les Allen and set a track ET record with a 7.34/202.70. He then reset the track's mph record in the second round, where he ran 7.37/203.61 to defeat Larry Bright's 7.95/187. He ran another 7.34 in the semifinal to drop Bill Landon's 7.98. To make sure that he backed up his records, Enriquez went 7.34/203.61 in the final to beat Barry Kaplan's 7.68/191. Enriquez was back at OCIR early in August for an eight-car show. His 7.54 qualified #1, and the car just kept on running quicker in eliminations. An opening round 7.47/199.11 beat Roger Pellor's 8.18/183. Bob McFarland fouled against him in the semifinal, and Don still pushed the little DeSoto to 7.40/200.89 (Top Speed) to advance. In the final, he also set Low ET with his 7.38/199.11 getting the measure of Tidwell's 7.68/198. In September, Don ran 7.46 (National Record) at OCIR with a Chrysler motor. He won a sixteen-car combo eliminator (Top Gas and Jr. Fuel) at OCIR on October 4. He beat Bob Downey in the final with a 7.50 (Low ET) at 195.65. Photo from 1969 World Finals, Dallas, Tex. |

Notes: On April 4, George was at Lions for an eight-car show. He qualified on the "bump" with an 8.60, but in the first round, he picked up to an 8.45/183.28 to win. There was no semifinal since first-round winners Larry Faust and Zane Schubert broke. So the final was between Bolthoff and Earl Canavan's Lincoln powered car. George won the final with an 8.23/183.28. |

Notes: Runner up at 1969 NHRA Nationals. Destroked iron Keith Black 426. Photo from 1969 World Finals, Dallas, TX. After Lou Baney's accident with the Folger Ford car at the PDA Championships on July 19, Brown was without a ride. Leland Kolb stepped in and gave Brown a job driving for him. They were very successful the rest of the year. On August 9, they raced at the OCIR Anniversary Race. Kelly singled in the first round, when Bob Williams shut off on the line and in a twin tire-smoking battle in the semifinals, his 7.01/204.08 beat Gary Cochran's 7.54. In the final, James Warren fouled away Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.87/222.77 giving Brown's close 6.88/204.54 the victory. At Indy, a 6.66/222.22 qualified #16. In the first round, Doc Halladay fouled against him. In round two, John Wiebe fouled against him. In the third round, Dave Powers slept against him, running a 6.59/225 that lost to Kelly's 6.71/210.28. In the semifinal, Jim Paoli's clutch exploded and Kelly was in the final. In the final, he faced Don Prudhomme. Don ran a 6.51/223 for the win to Kelly's 6.78/205.01 runner-up effort. He won the Division 7 race at Irwindale over a sixteen-car field on September 14. He set Low ET and a track record, in the final with a 6.91/214 that beat Don Argee. And at the Division 7 final at OCIR the following week (September 20), he won again. A semifinal 6.79 over Dwight Salisbury stood for Low ET. In the final, a 6.82/222.22 beat Carl Olson's tire smoking 7.26/201.79. He ran the Irwindale Grand Prix on October 4 where a 7.09/172.74 got past the first-round. He singled in the second round when Pat Foster broke. Don Soltz fouled against him in round three (32 car field), and another foul by Dwight Salisbury put him into the final against Olson. This time, Olson came out on top with a 7.13/196 over Kelly's 7.28/216.34 in a tire-smoking race. A 6.80/213.27 qualified #6 at the NHRA World Finals on October 26. Kelly singled in the first round, when Ken Bernstein's engine wouldn't stay lit, but in the second round, it was his own engine that lost fire giving Bennie Osborn a single. On November 9, he suffered a rare first-round loss at Carlsbad for the PDA Race of Champions event. Salisbury's holeshot 7.71/211 beat Kelly's 7.55/209.78. He more than made up for the first-round loss by winning the next PDA Race of Champions event at Sacramento on November 16, beating James Warren in the final with a 6.75/209.30. |
