Notes: Cyr & Hopper raced gas dragsters, then went to fuel, then returned to gas during the 1959 season, per the 4/11/59 Drag News. In that issue, with a cover headline shouting "158.75 ON GAS - CYR," it was reported that his Five Cycle Special set a new gas record at Long Beach: 9.61/158.75. We have a previously entered but unattributed 9.51/160.14. Was that on fuel or later in the year on gas? - RT; Photo: "'50s Drags in Color," Pat Ganahl's Rod & Custom website - MB |

Notes: This innovative dragster could be a poster child for 1950s homemade drag racing engineering. But as such, it had its ups and downs, being difficult to handle and inconsistent. It sported hydraulic front end suspension and a home-built centrifugal blower pumping into a 6/2 manifold converted to fuel injection. Notes: Right out of the gate, this dragster looked to be something special. It made a good showing at the U.S. Nationals in 1958 at Oklahoma City. In its first outing in '59 at Santa Ana, it clocked 163.63 mph in 9.61, its fastest run of the season. On Feb. 15 at Santa Ana, Nelson took Top Eliminator. On Mar. 8 at San Gabriel, Nelson took Top Eliminator and set track records with 9.70 and 149.25 mph. On Apr. 5 at San Gabriel, it set a strip speed record with 155.97 mph. In early July at Santa Ana, Nelson was seriously injured when he crashed. While he recovered, Dode Martin took over driving duties. He had driven a time or two before, but Nelson had been the primary driver before the crash. At Oklahoma City in August, Martin won top gas eliminator at the Mar-Car 1,000-Foot Invitational, winning a $500 savings bond. Dode drove at the Detroit National Championships, setting a national time mark at 9.03. The success of this original Dragmaster dragster brought success to Martin and Nelson as other racers wanted these well-built chassis. They began building them for the growing drag racing community. Notes: Chrisman ended the 1958 season on a high note and kept it rolling into 1959. At one of these early-season meets (possibly the Feb. 15 Riverside event), his blower exploded, blowing some of the body off and torching the rest. The exquisite paint job that it had when it appeared on the front cover of the Jan. 1959 issue of Hot Rod Magazine required a redo. On Feb. 15 at Riverside, he took Top Eliminator with a world record time of 8.54 and a speed of 181.81 mph. Two weeks later, he took Top Eliminator at the Bakersfield March Meet. Another feather in his cap. He took another TE win at Riverside on Apr. 19. Could he win the big meets? You're dang right! At Bakersfield on May 3, he clocked 8.41. Hustler I was really cooking. At Riverside on May 10, he ran 8.65 and 180.00 mph. He turned 8.80 at 176.81 on May 24 at Vaca Valley. On a return visit to Vaca Valley, he ran 176.81 mph but cracked a cylinder head. Not to worry. Chrisman-Cannon had another trick up their sleeve-Hustler II was in the wings. The Hustler II was an open-bodied car with the engine exposed, very different in appearance than Hustler I. Art drove Hustler II to a TE victory at Riverside on July 26 on the car's first time out. Things looked very promising with the new car. But after a disappointing outing at Lions and blowing the motor at Fremont, Art went back to racing Hustler I. But misfortune stalked him. He made a run at Fremont in Hustler I on Sep. 13 at 169.17 mph during time trials, but a ring and pinion gear gave out and put him on the trailer. At a 2-day meet at Kingdon the following week, he was beaten by Ted Cyr in the early rounds of eliminations. That was it for the season. Notes: Gary Cagle's life is worthy of a movie or book. An L.A. policeman, he had been in a wheelchair since 1948 after getting polio. Before he got into his top fuel car, he had raced on the salt flats and dry lakes and raced a fuel roadster on drag strips. A member of the Gear Grinders, he brought out his A/FD with a blown '57 Chrysler motor to Riverside at an SCTA 1/2 mile drag racing event on Jan. 11. He called his dragster "Half Fast IV." He set an SCTA record for the half-mile at that meet with 172.74 mph. The next week he returned to Riverside for quarter-mile racing but was beaten by Chrisman-Cannon's Hustler. But he had caught the eye of Chet Herbert, and they formed a racing partnership. So with Cagle driving the Herbert Cam Special, They went to Pomona on Jan. 25, just the third time out for the car. Cagle won Top Eliminator and set a new strip speed record with 168.22 mph. At Bakersfield on Feb. 1, he clocked some best times of 9.21 and 175.78 mph. He was making the rounds of Southern California tracks. In mid-February, he broke a blower belt, sending him home after a 9.14 at 167.91 mph run. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he got the meet's Top Speed of 180.36 mph. He also was timed at 180.00 mph, being the only car in the country to have turned over 180 mph twice in the same event. At Vaca Valley, he set a strip record of 175.43 mph on Apr. 12. At Bakersfield on May 3, he was Top Eliminator runner-up with 8.86 and best speed of 178.57 mph. Interestingly, to cure his front end from floating around, he removed the front fairing and chained and wired a heavy floor jack to the front end to give it some weight. In early June, Cagle and Herbert towed their dragster to the first Drag News Invitational at Great Bend, Kansas. This was to have been the beginning of a cross-country tour to strips in Kansas, Texas, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Minnesota, and Washington. His first run off the trailer was a stout 9.24 at 169.81 mph, the latter a track record. While making his second run, he was clocked at 162 mph when he veered slowly to the right into the dirt. The car flipped end over end seven times. It was a horrible crash, literally driving Cagle through the seat. The vehicle was totally demolished. Cagle suffered critical injuries from the crash that kept him hospitalized for weeks. Bob Sullivan put Cagle's engine into his dragster, continuing the tour that Cagle was to have taken. Notes: Mickey Brown, only 21 years old at the start of the season, was a drag racer on the rise. In '58, he became the first man to go over 150 MPH in a gas dragster. In 1959 he wracked up class wins, TE victories, and set strip and national records racing at tracks in Southern California. May was an especially fruitful month. On May 3 at Santa Maria, he set a strip Top Speed record of 163.63 mph. On May 9 at Lions, he set a strip and national Drag News 1320 speed record of 161.29 mph. Three weeks later, at Lions on May 30, he improved that national record mark with a 161.87 mph clocking. It was evident that young Mickey was an ascending star in the gas dragster ranks. But that came to an abrupt end for the young man on Sep. 12. On that fateful day, Ronnie Scrima and Mort Smith were testing a new short wheelbase (93") dragster at Lions. They had dropped Gene Adams's Oldsmobile engine in the car but were having a hard time getting it down the track. Mickey Brown had left his own Olds-powered dragster at home, and he offered to see if he could drive the car. About 100 feet from the starting line, he lost control and flipped upside down, suffering fatal injuries because his head got outside the confines of the roll bar. Racers remembered him as a kind of wild but fun-loving kid. Photo: "'50s Drags in Color," Pat Ganahl's Rod & Custom website - MB |

Notes: In '59, they mounted a blower on their Merc OHV engine. On Apr. 5 at Bakersfield, they won top gas eliminator with 149 mph but lost to Jack Chrisman driving the Spaghetti Benders A/FD in the top eliminator run.
