Notes: On July 22, Bill was at Muncie for a best of five match race against Charlie Allen's Dart. In their first race, Allen's 9.52 easily beat the Chevelle's 10.18. It was the same thing in the next race where even though Churchfield leaped out to a good lead, Allen drove around him to win. But the Mopar blew the engine while entering the traps and could not continue the match. Bill came back out and ran a 9.99. Injected fuel. Tom Jacobson also drove this car in 1965. Bill ran this car in 1966 until he built a Corvair funny car. In June, when the Corvair was destroyed at Union Hill, Sturm-Churchfield brought this car back out to finish the season. 427 punched out to 480 inches. Notes: John was at US 30 Gary, Indiana, for an FC show on September 11. His 9.52/142.85 beat Hardin and Cannon's Corvair in the first round. He got completely out of shape in round two and shut off to a 13.14/92.73 that lost to Malcolm Durham's 9.54/132. | Injected fuel AWB. Acid-dipped, 2700 lbs. Ran car in '65 and '66. Have read that car was a total loss when it rolled at Millersville, MD, in August 1966. Have also heard the car still exists. - DD | Answer: Drag Times for 9/02/66 reported that the car flipped at Capitol and was a "total loss." The car was found and restored. It exists today. The cause of the flip was given as a broken motor mount. Many cars have been declared totaled at the scene of the accident and later rebuilt. It may well have never RACED again. - Norm Hechtkoff | The Golden Commandos are reported to have been the first team of match racers to swap their carburetors for Hilborn injectors (in 1965). - RT Motor City 1966 (8/26/66 Drag Times) |

Notes: Injected fuel. Durham started the 1966 season with the Chevelle he ran in 1965. Then he came out with this Corvair. Partway through the 1966 season, he had the car stretched. He ran the stretched Corvair into the 1968 season. Durham sold this Corvair to Gene Altizer, who ran the car as the "Weasel" in 1969 as an A/FC. - DD | Best ET for '66 was 8.61. - RH | Malcolm debuted the Corvair for the first time at a best two out of three match race against Phil Bonner on May 1 at Cecil County. He didn't do so well the first time out as he lost all three races. In the first race, he fouled. In the second race, the car stalled and refused to refire. And in the third race, he had the windshield pop out on a 9.36/117.34 pass that lost to Bonner's 9.02/143. More bad luck followed at Great Meadows on May 15 when he faced off against Bob Harrop. Once again, he lost all three races with a best of 9.9/142. On August 13, he was at Cecil County for a four-car race. In his first race, his 9.36/150 lost to Dick Landy's 8.76/144. Durham turned in the first "eight" by a Chevy at Cecil in the next race when he ran 8.96/157 only to lose to Mike Buckel's 8.63/163 in the "Ramchargers" car. In the final race, Durham ran 9.09/155 to turn back Del Heinelt's 9.21/150 in the "Seaton's Shaker" Chevelle. Later in the year, he had the Corvair running well enough to beat Ronnie Sox at Aquasco on August 14 in a best of five match. Sox had the best times in winning the first two races running in the eights, while Durham lost with 9.28/153.84 and 9.21/155.70 times. In the third race, Sox slept and lost to a 9.27/152.80 with a motor destroying 9.15/150. This let Malcolm solo in the last two races for the match race win. Durham faced off against Roger Lindamood's "Color Me Gone" Charger at National Trail on September 10. Lindamood had troubles, and Durham won two straight with times of 9.13/152.86 and 9.16/149. In October, the Corvair was in the eights, beating Bill Flynn in a best of five match race at Englishtown. He lost the first race but came back to win the next three with runs of 8.89/160, an 8.86 best also at 160, and a 9.00/160 to win the match. |

Notes: Blown fuel. This is the car Chrisman ran in 1964, upgraded in 1965. Keaton ran this car early in 1966 for Chrisman, bought it outright. Late in 1966, Chrisman borrowed it back when he crashed his own car. Car was still around in 1969, for sale by Inglewood Service Center. Keaton started 1966 in Chevy II, went to this, then ran this under his own name. Later in 1966 drove Sheldon Konblett's "Peanuts" LTD, and late in 1966 had new flip-top Comet under construction. Notes: Injected gas here, also ran fuel. Ran car in 1965, and very early in 1966. Sold this to Jim Wetton, and started running his Dart. Dart ran blown and unblown. Landy also drove Shirley Shahan's "Drag On Lady" Plymouth a few times in 1966. |

Notes: Injected gas here. Also ran on fuel. - Dennis Doubleday. | I have photos of the build process and the original paint scheme when the car had a 396 in it. The 427 came out of his Corvette. The 427 had an one of a kind fuel injection system and my fathers ties to GM were so strong it featured a prototype cam build just for my fathers car. I also have some old photos of him racing it and some old newspaper clippings. - Matthew McLean |
