Notes: Burkhart was a big guy - 6'10" tall and over 300 pounds. He was an electrician by trade. In the 1957 season, he teamed up with Mike Burns as his driver and Erdman to compete in both gas and fuel roadster classes. They generally ran at San Gabriel and San Fernando, with occasional forays to Colton or Bakersfield. In May, Reath Automotive joined them as a sponsor. The various tracks had different classifications, but they could generally be called a C Roadster, employing a flathead Ardun-Merc motor. At San Fernand on Mar. 3, they ran in K class as a Gas Roadster Flathead, turning 113.92 mph. Two weeks later, they ran 112.50 mph at San Gabriel to win the A/R class. On Apr. 7 at Bakersfield, they ran in A Hot Roadster class (a fuel class), where they turned 131 mph. Back at San Gabe on Apr. 14, they turned 11.99 at 112.50 mph to win the C/R class. At San Gabe on May 7, they took a class win at 111.53 mph. At San Fernando on May 26, with Joe Reath joining the team, they took a K class win in Gas Roadsters at 113.92 mph. On June 2 at San Gabe, they won C/R with 111.63 mph. They repeated their C/R win at 111.38 mph at San Gabe a week later. At Lions on June 15/16 at the Drag News Open Invitational, they took a C/R win at 112.92 mph. At Bakersfield on July 7, running in B Hot Roadster on fuel, they won with 128.68 mph. On July 14 at San Gabe, they ran 113.49 mph for a C/R win. On Aug. 4 at San Gabe, they won C/R on gas with 113.38 mph. A week later, they set a track record in the gas roadster class at San Fernando at 114.64 mph. At Colton on Sep. 2, they turned 123.62 mph to take an A/HR win. At San Gabe on Sep. 8, they won C/R class with 109.89 mph. At San Gabe on Sep. 29, they won C/R with 111.63 mph. They finished the season at Bakersfield with a win in A/HR with 127.62 mph. They were among the most active drag racing roadsters on the SoCal scene in 1957. Photo: Early Drag Racing Photos, p. 25, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. - MB
