Notes: Don Gay had his GTO at Green Valley Raceway on February 18 to take on Gene Snow's Dart in a best of three match race. Gay won the first race when Gene broke, but the GTO broke in the second race to even the score. In the final deciding race, both ran 8-second times, but Snow got the win. | Listing 8.95 until we get validated times. |

Notes: Hughes started his season at the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field. He beat Larry Arnold in the "Super Ford," but he lost to Clare Sanders in round two in the first round. The team ran at the NHRA Winternationals on February 2 and, due to the poor track surface, ran an 8.31/187.89 that still qualified them #13. Hughes ran Low ET of the first-round with an 8.01/193.96 that beat Randy Walls' 8.22. He again had Low ET of round two with a 7.86/198.23 (Top Speed) that beat Marv Eldridge's 8.25/183. But in the semifinal, Leonard had trouble and shut down to an 11.30 while Clare Sanders motored on to a 7.80 for the win.The team had problems at Riverside and failed to qualify for the HRM Championships. On May 4, they raced at the fourth annual Aquasco Funny Car Invitational, but Leonard got out of shape and lost against Frank Oglesby in the first round. They set a track record 197.63 at Miami-Hollywood's mid-May Funny Car race but failed to get into the finals. On May 18, four FCs were scheduled to race at LaPlace. Mike Burkhart's tow rig had problems, and he was late arriving. So in the first round of racing, Steve Puneky filled in with Charlie Durel's AA/GD. The gasser ran Hughes, and Leonard got out of shape and hit the newly installed guardrail. The damage was light, and in his second race, Hughes ran 7.71/192.76 to defeat Dee Keaton's 7.99/156 in Fred Goeske's "Hemi-'Cuda." He faced Ed Schartman in the last race, and the 'Cuda hit some water on the track and shut off while Schartman ran 7.7/182 to win. Back at Aquasco on May 27 for an eight-car show, Hughes' 7.83/197.36 (track speed record) beat Tommy Grove's 8.10/188 in the first round. Unfortunately, Hughes fouled against Jim Liberman in the semifinal. At Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals on June 8, a 7.65/201.78 qualified fourth. Burkhart fouled against him in the opening round, so Hughes ran an easy 8.04 to advance. In round two, Ronnie Runyan also fouled against the 'Cuda. In the semifinal, a Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 7.52/202.70 put Tom McEwen on the trailer. In the final, he faced Danny Ongais and fouled. He was not happy. A 7.89/203.61 (Top Speed) qualified the team sixth at the NHRA Springnationals on June 15. A first-round 7.58/198.67 over Cogo Eads lead to a second-round meeting with Ongais. Leonard was hoping to correct his loss from the week before by dumping the MT Mustang, but in a straight-up race, Danny's 7.64/190 beat Hughes oh so close 7.65/201.79. The Candies and Hughes team was getting known for putting up the big numbers being one of the few cars to hit 200 mph consistently. This was happening more and more, especially after the team put on the new "zoomie" headers shortly after the Springnationals. On July 4, they were at Southland Dragway, Houma, where Leonard faced Roy Gay's GTO in a best two out of three match. Hughes won the match two straight with runs of 7.80/194 and 7.64/195. Roy was unable to run any better than an 8.53. On July 6, Hughes was back at LaPlace for a match race against Henry Garcia driving the "Car Shop" Camaro. Hughes won two straight with times of 7.78/196.06 and 7.70/196.50. The Camaro could only run an 8.02 best. Another match race was run at Memphis on July 11 against Bobby Woods Nova. This race did not go according to plan for the "Candies and Hughes" team. The car got out of shape in their first race, and Leonard lost to Woods' 7.59/191. In the second race, the Chevy just flat outran the Mopar as Woods' 7.61/191 topped the 'Cuda's 7.65/202.70 (speed was a new track record). Hughes won the final race with a 7.71/195.64 over Bobby's 7.78. Dallas ran an eight-car show on July 26. Hughes' 7.50/206.42 beat a blower-popping Mart Higginbotham in the first round. In the semifinal, a 7.47 (Low ET) at 204.84 beat Dick Harrell's 7.76/196. A 7.67/207 (Top Speed) beat Mike Burkhart in the final. The following day, the team was at Southland Dragway for a match race against Sid Foster, who was now behind the wheel of the "Super Ford." Foster won the first race with an 8.15 when the "Cuda broke a transmission. But Hughes evened things up in the second race where his 7.48/203.16 (track speed record) got the better of the Torino's 7.83/191. Hughes won the match with a 7.57/203 in the final race over Sid's 7.67. If there was any doubt about this team, it was erased at Indy, where Hughes qualified #1 with a 7.24/208.81 (Top Speed) and ran 7.28/207.37 in the first round over Dick Bourgeois' Javelin at 7.45. Another run of 7.25 beat Jack Chrisman's 7.72 in the second round, but a 7.28 in the semifinal lost to Rich Siroonian's 7.25. The team still left on a high note, setting Low ET and Top Speed. The following week, LaPlace hosted a four-car show. Hughes ran really well. In the first race, his 7.33/205.94 (track speed record) beat Mart Higginbotham's 8.01/184. In his second race, Al Vanderwoulde's 8.10/155 fell to his 7.81/154.10. He took his only loss in the third race, where his 7.45/202.24 was beaten by Kelly Chadwick's 7.42/193. Leonard showed up at Gainesville on September 14, gunning for the NHRA Funny Car speed record of 190.26. He made a 7.15/201.34 pass but blew the blower off, so he could not make any other runs. Without a backup run within 2% of his speed, the old record stood. Buckhart was Hughes's next victim on the match race trail. The two met up at Southland on September 28. Hughes lost the first race when his linkage broke, but he returned to score the next two races and the match race victory with times of 7.56/189.64 and 7.46/184.04. Mike's best was 8.13/172. | The team held the Fremont track record at the end of 1969 with a 7.25/202.54. - Danny White | Won first Annual Manufacturers Championship at Rockford (Ill.) Dragway with three sequential 7.37, 7.37, 7.39 passes, setting a track record 7.37/205.46. - RT |

Notes: We need more info on this racer, this is Eddie Baumann in the photo | North Star Dodge in San Antonio sponsored a Pro Stock Challenger in 1970, driven by Donna Kottler also of San Antonio TX. Her husband Ray Kottler and his brother Kent wrenched on the car. She won a couple of open field events at San Antonio Raceway and she had at least one match race against Shay Nichols' Camaro. Eddie Baumann, an ex-Top Gas Dragster racer took over the driving in 1971 (pictured). |

Notes: Mike Burkhart's first funny car was this steel Chevy II match basher. Burkhart was a terror with his Super Stock '57 Chevrolet Bel Air in the Dallas area. In 1965, Mike built the steel Chevrolet with big block injected Chevy power. Friendly Chevrolet sponsored the stretched wheelbased car. Burkhart won many match races with the strangely painted Chevy II (it was red on one side and blue on the other). Mike was a regular in Texas match races with the Chevy II in 1966, but retired the car at the end of the season to build a Camaro for 1967. |

Notes: AWB, Hilborn-injected fuel. This photo depicts car as it ran prior to paint. Ted DeTar broke this car in. Ran in 1966 this way until getting stretched by T-Bar, and '66 nose was aded. Snow ran car through 1968, when he sold it to Mike Brown. Car was then run in brackets in 1970s by Richardson family. |
