Notes: Roy Hill had a great year driving for Joe Penny in '87. He started his IHRA Campaign at the Winternationals, qualifying eighth with a 7.41/185. The car kept on running quicker. In round one, his 7.38/189 beat Bob Harris' 7.51/190. A second round 7.34/190 beat Jim Ruth's "Party Time" Firebird. In the semifinals, he ran his best of the weekend, a 7.30/191 to beat Billy Ewing's 7.43/191. That set up an all-Ford final against Rickie Smith. In the final, Roy's car was unable to stage as it kept creeping forward before fouling. Roy hesitated and then hammered it getting a strange 7.83 time at a speed of 194.80. Rickie won with a 7.17/191. At the Rockingham Pro-Am race, he qualified second with a 7.40/188.67, but he had problems in the first round, and his 8.01/187.11 lost to alternate Kenny Tripp's 7.93/173. Terry Adams' holeshot 7.53/190 beat Hill's quicker 7.44/188 in the semis at the Springnationals. At Atco for the Summernationals, he qualified with a 7.21/192. Hill ran 7.30/191 over Rickie Smith's quicker 7.26 in the semis before losing to Bob Glidden's 7.23 with a 7.27 in the final. Roy set Low ET at 7.25 and ran a career best speed of 196.07 at Milan for the Northern Nationals. He made it into the semifinals before his 7.31/192.30 lost to Smith's 7.28/193. But he won the next race, the World Nationals at Norwalk. There, he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.31. A first-round 7.32/188 beat Smith while a round two 7.37/189.08 beat Glidden's out of shape machine. A 7.33/190.27 in the semifinals stopped Tim Nabors' 7.44/189 from advancing. In the final he faced Jerry Haas. Jerry fouled and Hill ran 7.32/189.87 for the victory. |

Notes: Check out the dual rear wing. Lee was in Atlanta on April 21 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.43/214.79 qualified #1. In the opening round, he slowed to an off-pace 6.92/194.30 that fell to Billy Williams' 6.57/208. A week later (April 28), he was at Indianapolis for the NHRA Division Three opener. It was another eight-car show, and Lee's 6.52/212.26 qualified #4. He improved to 6.49/212.76 in the opening round to defeat Tony Zizzo's 6.56/209. But in the semifinal, he slowed to 6.91/207.85, which lost to eventual winner Butch Osmon's 6.60/205. He raced at Baton Rouge in May for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 6.51/212.86 qualified #3. Young had a close race with Kirk Lawrence in round one, that saw his 6,64/209.20 lose to Kirk's 6.62/211. His next stop was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Sportsnationals. He qualified right in the middle (eighth) of the sixteen-car field with a 6.56/214.38. In the first round, he fouled away a 6.62 against Doug McCan, who advanced at 7.63. | At the NHRA US Nationals, Young qualified #2 with a 6.412/215.20. He would defeat #10 qualifier Don Irvin in round 1 6.542/213.67 to 6.908/198.15. #14 qualifier Mike Kosky in round 2 6.540/214.38 to 6.657/194.21 & #16 qualifier Ken Murray in the semis with a 6.504/213.39 after Murray red lit. In the Final Young faced #1 Qualifier Bill Walsh. While Young was consistently in the 6.50s & did it again with a 6.525/216.03, It was a losing effort to the 6.40 consistent Walsh & his 6.428/215.41 time to the US Nationals Victory. |

Notes: In May, Joe was still racing his Firebird when he went to Atco for its FC show. It was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, his 7.07/200.44 beat Joe Shubert's 7.58/192. He improved to 7.00/200.44 in round two to beat Tommy Musselman's 7.08/197. I do not have the semi-final results, but he advanced into the final to run Peter Gallen. Peter had problems and shut down to a nine-second time while Amato got the victory with a 7.08/200.44 (again)! |

Notes: Joe started the '86 season by qualifying #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.47/269.46 (Top Speed and a new NHRA record). Another 5.47 at 263.15 beat a blower tossing Chris Karamesines in the first round. In round two, his 5.46/261.62 advanced when Earl Whiting broke. In the semifinals, he slowed to 5.59/260.11 and lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.54/265. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified well back in the field (#13) with a 5.64/261.17. His first-round 5.78/243.63 beat Gene Snow's 5.84/231, but in round two he lost to eventual winner Don Garlits' 5.46/246 with an early shut off 5.84/197.80. He followed the NHRA tour to Atlanta for the Southern Nationals where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.48/262.39. He took out Kalitta in round one, with a 5.61/253.87 before losing a close one to Snow in round two where both ran 5.64 (Amato at 250.41). NHRA's next stop was at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. A 5.56/261.17 qualified #3. A quick-leaving 5.66/255.46 beat Ray Stutz's 5.64/242 in the first round, but in round two his 5.69/249.51 lost to Gary Beck's 5.68/245. After all those second round losses, it was good to make it into the final at the NHRA Springnationals. Joe qualified #6 with a 5.57/256.70 and in the first round, his 5.64/256.41 beat Richard Holcomb. Round two saw Amato's 5.75/207.66 take out Snow's 5.81/200 while a semifinal 5.60/253.73 beat a tire-smoking Stutz. This put Amato into the final against Kalitta. Unfortunately, Joe broke and Kalitta singled for the victory. After that, it was off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.60/254.86 and an improved 5.54/256.41 in the first round, beat Bob Simmons. Once again, he lost in round two where his 5.59/255.24 lost to Darrell Gwynn's 5.51/260. Joe also ran 271.16 at 1986 Cragar Classic. |
