Notes: Photo from Indy 1991. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Chuck qualified #6 for the show and in the first round, beat Ron Sutherland with a 5.65/266.11. He picked up to a 5.55/260.34 in round two, but it wasn't enough as he lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.41/253. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #13 and lost in the first round. Things didn't look much better at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals where his 5.55 qualified on the "bump" spot. But he got around low qualified Jim White and in round two his 10.66/71.63 advanced when Richard Hartman broke. In the semifinals, he ran 5.40/267.61, but lost to eventual winner Force's 5.32/270. The next NHRA event was the Gatornationals where Chuck qualified #9. He lost to Mark Oswald in the first round.

Notes: Tim started the season with a runner-up finish at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 at 5.918/225.00. Tim and Steve Chrisman lost traction in the first round, but his 6.728/162.16 held off Steve's 6.86/220. In round two, he advanced with a 5.959/241.93 when Frank Hawley had severe tire shake and crossed the centerline in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the semifinals, another 5.959/241.93 beat a tire-smoking 6.97/154 by Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Tim's final round 6.039/247.93 finished second best to Al Segrini's 5.96/234. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.780/238.72. Unfortunately, Tim blew a motor in the first round, and his 6.798/142.40 lost to John Force's tire-smoking 6.55/245. The following week (March 25), he was at Darlington, racing his Corvette for the last time before his new Firebird was finished. He qualified #15 with a 6.29 and in the opening round, the car broke against Roy Harris.

Notes: Beat four "high dollar" cars, messed up the points chase, and won the NHRA World Finals - all in one day. Photo from Indy 1984. | Sherm did not qualify at the NHRA Winters (times not reported). He qualified #14 at Atlanta with a 6.021/241.28 but shut off and lost to Dale Pulde's 5.90 in round one. He next ran at the NHRA Cajun Nationals and qualified #10 at 6.049/240.64. Pulde got him again in round one, but it was closer, 5.92 to 6.27/205. Sherm found the fives at the Springnationals, running 5.989/236.22 to qualify #12. He surprised Kenny Bernstein in round one, 6.14/226, to a 12-second shutoff. Raymond Beadle ended Sherm's day in round two, 5.93 to 6.28/191. Sherm qualified #13 at Brainerd at 6.017/239.36. Mark Oswald got around him in round one, but Sherm was competitive, 5.83/226 to 6.012/241.93. Sherm qualified #15 at Indy with a nice 5.931/250.00, but Bernstein got revenge in round one, 5.91, to Sherm's 10-second shutoff. Sherm's next race was the season-ending NHRA World Finals at Pomona. It was his finest hour. Sherm qualified #11 at 5.898/250.69. He started his day of giant-killing with a first-round 5.959/239.36 to 5.898/249.30 holeshot to defeat Kenny Bernstein by .005 seconds. Round two placed Sherm against legend Don Prudhomme, but Sherm bit the Snake with a consistent 5.980/224.43 as Prudhomme shut off at 11 seconds. Sherm was up against Billy Meyer in the semi-finals. This time, he had to drive around a holeshot as Meyer got out first. But Sherm stayed consistent to win at 5.915/243.90 to Meyer's close 5.991/221.67. In the final, Gunn lined up against yet another monster, Mark Oswald, in the mighty Candies and Hughes Firebird, which had leveraged 5.70s all day. But this was Sherm Gunn's day in the sun, as he ran an even quicker 5.877/248.61 as the C&H car lost a motor and faded to an 11-second shutoff. | Sherm Gunn/Mark Dentler Funny Car took the win. Dentler was the CC of Mike Miller's Mustang II in the late 70s. The 5.89 in late Saturday qualifying beat McEwen's 5.97 to the finish line. ND after-report said Tom Prock was trying different gear ratios in the 'Goose's Coors Corvette. - Joe Moore

Notes: Frank started the year by winning the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He qualified #2 with a 5.976/241.28. He ran his slowest time of eliminations in the first round, a 6.08/236.84, but it was still enough to beat Jim Dunn's 6.18/227. In round two, Hawley picked up to a 5.93/239.36 to beat a tire-smoking Don Prudhomme, while another 5.93 in the semifinals beat Tom McEwen. He faced low qualifier Tom Anderson in the final, and the "Chi-Town" car churned out yet another 5.93 at 249.30 (Top Speed) to get the victory. Tom lost with a 6.02/241. In March, he won the next NHRA race as well, the Gatornationals. Frank qualified #9 with a 5.93/208.81, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Mark smoked his tires in their race, and Hawley advanced with a 5.90/245.90. In round two, his 5.93/241.93 beat Raymond Beadle's 6.19/213 in the "Blue Max." In the semifinals, Frank ran 5.94/240.65 to beat Mike Dunn's 6.06/233 in the "Hawaiian." The final was between him and Dale Pulde. Dale ran a good 5.98/242 but lost to Frank's 5.92/242.58. The "Chi-Town Hustler" team won its third NHRA race in a row when Frank won the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 5.95/243.90, but in the first round, Oswald fouled against him, and he advanced with a 5.99. He got past Ken Veney in the semifinals and met with Al Segrini in the final. Hawley got the victory with a 5.99/240.64 over Segrini's 6.07/214. The team then went to a UDRA meet at Byron and won that as well, setting a track record 6.02. They did not compete at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but the "Chi-Town" car was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.95/234.98 qualified #3, but in the opening round, Hawley's 6.03/235.60 lost to Anderson's 5.97/240. The team then traveled to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Hawley qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.98/238.09. In round one, a controversial 5.716 beat Segrini, but he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Don Prudhomme. It should be noted that NHRA listed Prudhomme's 5.91 from qualifying at Low ET. (Event winner Mark Oswald actually got a 5.621 in round one, quicker than Top Fuel Low ET of 5.662 by Richard Tharp). Photo from booked in Funny Car show at GVRC WWCS meet in April of 1983. Hawley won the show and set Low ET at 6.03. | The car was repainted in Team Strange colors in mid 1983. - Danny White

Hoover set Low ET in qualifying #1 at Houston's third NHRA Division 4 race. There were only three FCs at the race, and Tom soloed due to his top qualifying spot and ran 6.37/225.56 to advance to the final against John White. In the final, Hoover's Corvette developed problems, and he shut down, giving White the victory. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 6.10/236.84 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. In round one, he ran 6.27/220.04 but lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.25/234. Hoover ran really well at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.20/231.95 qualified #8, and in the first round, he beat Roy Harris, 6.22/230.76 to 6.60/186. Another 6.22/227.84 in round two topped Rick Johnson's 6.25/236, while in the semifinals, his 6.30/224.43 advanced when Ed McCulloch had a header come loose and shut down. He faced Beadle in the final, and Tom smoked the tires to a runner-up finish to the "Max's" 6.09/235. He then went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. There he qualified #2 with a 6.51/209.80. He then went on to win by beating Dale Tuter and Henry Harrison before stopping Larry Fullerton in the final with a 6.63/212.27. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, choosing to go to Alamo Dragway in San Antonio, Texas, for the AHRA Nationals. His 6.11 qualified #2 behind Prudhomme's 5.92. But in the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.89 that lost to John Collins' 6.29. He also didn't go to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Things went his way at Union Grove on July 27 for the NHRA Division Three race. A 6.21 qualified #2, and he went on to win, running 6.24 in the final to beat Frank Hawley. Tom's next NHRA national event was Indy, where he qualified #3 at 6.021/243.90. Unfortunately, he broke on the burnout against McCulloch in round one. He qualified well at Seattle, hitting 6.045/230.76 for the second slot. But again, first-round troubles set in, and he shut off against Gordie Bonin in the first round. Tom's qualifying prowess continued at Ontario, as his 6.123/234.98 grabbed the #2 spot. He beat John Collins in round one, 6.173/221.13 to 6.83/188, but Raymond Beadle got him in round two, 6.13/237 to 6.32/222.27.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1984. After starting the year with a crash and explosion on a qualifying run at Pomona during the NHRA Winternationals, Mert came back in this Tempo. On June 3, he won an eight-car show at Carlsbad. Littlefield had never run at Carlsbad before this. He ran 6.16/231 in his first-round race to beat Henry Harrison's quicker 6.06/206, and in his next race, he set Low ET with a 6.05 at 223.22 to beat Jim Holtz. The final was run between the two Low ET cars, so Harrison was again lined up against Littlefield. Once again, Mert had the "win" light come on in his lane; a 6.18/235 got him the victory. Littlefield's best of 6.026/235.60 was the fourth alternate at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He qualified #15 at the World Finals with a 5.963/239.36. He lost a round one match to Don Prudhomme, 6.80/250 to Mert's 6.142/242.58. DId Mert run 5.93 somewhere this year?

Notes: The "Goose" had one of his best seasons in '84. It didn't start so well at the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #8 in an eight-car show with a 6.52 and lost to Mike Dunn's 6.28/230 in the first round, with another 6.52/214. But at the next event, the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at Firebird Raceway, he finished runner up to Kenny Bernstein's 5.98/248 with a 6.07/236.84. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he lost to John Lombardo in the first round. He then ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.83 at 247.25 to qualify #4 at the NHRA Gatornationals. Another 5.83/253.52 in the first round, beat Bob Gottschalk, but in the second round, the Corvette broke, advancing Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." He clicked at the next race, the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington, although he only ran a 5.98 to qualify #6. He eased past the first-round but then picked up the pace with a 5.87/245 in the second round that beat Kenny Bernstein's 6.04/245. In the semifinals, a 5.89 beat Billy Meyer's 5.88. In the final, he ran his old teammate, Don Prudhomme, and the "Snake" had problems while Tom motored to a 5.91/248.61 victory. At the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, Tom qualified #5 with a 5.86/252.10. He beat Jim Head in the first round, but broke on the line in the second round, advancing Bernstein. He ran well at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships but failed to reach the finals. Tom ran several 5.80s at 250 plus this year, but his best times came in qualifying at Indy with a 5.804/254.23. A first-round 6.03 beat John Martin, but in round two he lost a close won to Al Segrini. His 5.95 lost to Al's 5.94. He lasted until the second round at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals as well. There he smoked the tires and lost to Kenny Bernstein. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he barely made the show, qualifying #16 with a 5.92/249.58. A consistent 5.94/246.17 in the first round, beat Segrini, but once again he lost in round two. This time John Lombardo stopped him in the "Blue Max."

Notes: The car had that wild "shovel" nose on it, also ran it in '86. This car is the one Billy used 3 spark plugs per cylinder on until outlawed by NHRA. Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. At the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at Firebird Raceway in January, Meyer had his supercharger explode on a 5.84/218.44 qualifier. The brand-new Mustang body was blown to pieces, and he received slight burns to his forehead. He was done for the day. Billy started the '85 NHRA season by qualifying #15 at Pomona for the Winternationals with final attempt, 6.03/239.36. Billy lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. He destroyed another Mustang body at Atlanta on March 10. He was there for an eight-car show where he qualified #8 with a 6.42/223.88. In the first round, he beat a tire-smoking Pulde with a 5.82/240.00, but in the lights, the blower exploded and took the Mustang body with it. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, Billy lasted until round two where Ed McCulloch's 5.91/254 beat his 5.97/243. A best of 5.93/229.00 failed to qualify at the Gatornationals, but he rebounded with a runner-up finish at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. In the semifinal, he stopped Kenny Bernstein's 5.95/243 with a 5.88/250. In the final, he faced Pulde, and they both ran 5.80 (Billy at Top Speed of the meet, 261.62), but Dale got the win. His next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where he qualified #8 with a 5.93/208.04. A 5.99/250.00 beat Tom Hoover's 6.12/224. In round two, he got out of shape and shut off in a loss to John Lombardo's 5.91/246 in the "Blue Max.” Meyer lost early at the next NHRA race as well, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. He qualified #3 with a 5.84/247.38, but in the first round, he crossed the centerline while racing Ron Correnti. Things weren't much better at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where he lost to Don Prudhomme in round two. Billy made another final round appearance at the NHRA Springnationals in June. He qualified #6 with a 5.83/236.22 and beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.89/231.60. A second-round 5.81/242.06 beat a tire-smoking John Force and in the semifinals, a 5.82/241.54 beat John Collins' 5.94/244. In the final, Bernstein's 5.81/251 beat Meyer tire-smoking run. Only 15 cars showed up for the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, but Billy still ran hard in qualifying running a 5.704/256.70 for the #2 spot. He smoked the tires hard in the first round, with a 6.05/254.09, but still beat Head, who blew an engine. He lost to eventual winner Rick Johnson driving the "Hawaiian" in round two. He was at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals where he lasted until the semifinals. After that, he made the trip to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #10 with a 5.80, but he lost to Tim Grose in the opening round. It was then off to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Meyer's 5.96 at only 205.94 qualified #7. He beat Cal Jackson in the first round, with a 6.59/153.73 before losing to John Force's 5.95/243 with a 5.99/222.77 in the next round. He then went to Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. Billy qualified #4 and ran 5.806/250.00 and 5.889/245.23 to reach the semifinals where he lost to Pulde.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1984. Ran 5.94/240 at ADRA Dragway 42 1984. | Prudhomme had an interesting season. He was one of only six drivers to run in the 5.60s. In six IHRA starts, he made the final round in four of them, but in NHRA competition, he was winless for the second straight year. In fact, he failed to make an NHRA final. The last time that happened was in '72. Don started the season in the best way, by winning. He won the AHRA Winternationals in January. He qualified #1 with a 6.23 on the tricky surface. He advanced past the first-round when opponent Bill McCahill crossed the centerline. In the semifinals, a 6.46/218 beat Bryan Raines in the "Impulse" Mustang. A final round 6.66/208 took the victory over Henry Harrison who had earlier set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.15/232. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A first-round 5.95/217.91 beat Ed McCulloch's quicker 5.90/243, but he shut off with problems in the second round, letting John Force single. At the Gatornationals, 24 cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Don ran 5.94/240.64 to qualify #13. Once again, he had problems and shut off, this time in the first round, advancing John Collins. Things went much better the following week (March 25) at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. The track record going into this race was a 6.02 by Raymond Beadle. Prudhomme broke both ends of the track record in qualifying #1 with a 5.79/254.23. He got past the first-round easily and then beat Force's 6.00/241 in the second round with a 5.93/241. In the semifinals, both Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car and Don ran 5.96, but the "Snake" got the win. In the final, he met up with his old friend, Tom McEwen. Don had problems and limped across with a 15.58/58.17 while McEwen ran 5.91/248 for the victory. At the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, Don qualified #10 with a 5.92, but he lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. Also in May, he ran at Famoso for the Bakersfield meet. An eight-car Funny Car show was run and 10 cars attempted to qualify. Don ran 5.81 to qualify #2. A first-round 5.72 at a career-best speed of 257.14 beat Gary Thompson, but he hurt his motor and was out of the competition. We needless to say, that pass was good for Low ET and Top Speed. Don failed to qualify for the eight-car show at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #1 at Bristol on June 3 for the IHRA Springnationals. A 5.74 (Low ET) got the spot. Unfortunately, he lost to Meyer in the first round. On June 10, he qualified #5 with a 5.85/252.80 at the NHRA Springnationals. A first-round 5.87/246.57 beat Paul Smith, while a second round 5.99/212.36 advanced when Force broke. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 12.24/69 that lost to McEwen's 5.87/251. At the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan, he qualified #5 with a 6.01, but lost to Jim Head's 6.06 in round two with a 6.13.

Prudhomme started his season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He ran 5.98 to qualify #6 in the eight-car field. John Force banged a blower in the first round, and Don advanced with a 5.99/238.09. In the semifinal, he ran 6.04/229, but he had gotten out of shape and crossed the centerline. His opponent, John Collins, advanced to the final with a tire-smoking 9.13. The following weekend, he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Nothing went right there for the "Snake," as the best run he could make was a 7.92/111.96. Obviously, that failed to qualify. After that bad showing, things went better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Don's 5.80/252.10 qualified #11. He improved to 5.78/251 in the opening round to beat Force. In round two, the car went into heavy tire shake, and he shut off against Collins, who advanced with a 5.74. He was back at Firebird Raceway on April 6 for the Coor's Funny Car Championships. Unfortunately, tire shake did him in again, where he clicked it off to 9.45 in a first-round loss to Johnny West's 6.59. Shortly after that, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Prudhomme qualified #7 with a 5.90/253.52. He continued to look strong in round one, where his 5.88/252.95 beat Jim Head's 6.07/246. In the second round, his opponent, Ron Correnti, sheared a fuel pump and the "Snake" advanced with a 5.94/249.58. But that was it, as an off-pace 6.12/204.73 lost to the eventual winner Kenny Bernstein's 5.75/254 in the semifinal. It was no secret that Prudhomme was not running up to par, nowhere was it more evident than at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He blew an engine during qualifying. He blew up another one in the first round, while beating Al Segrini. Yet another engine was lost on a 5.83/237 in round two that beat Mark Oswald's 5.85/257 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He was supposed to run Dale Pulde in the semifinal, but he gave up and packed up for the home as he was out of parts.

Notes: Dale's season didn't turn out the way he would have liked. For the first time in ten years of competition, he failed to reach a single final round in NHRA or IHRA events. He did run 5.60s with a 5.690 at Pomona and a 5.64 at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Pulde started the season with a first-round loss to Frank Hawley at the NHRA Winternationals. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #15 with a 6.00/243.90, but in the first round, the Firebird broke, advancing Al Segrini. His first IHRA event was the Winternationals held at Darlington on March 5. Dale qualified #11 with a 6.11, but he again lost in the first round. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he lasted until the second round, where he fouled against eventual winner Billy Meyer. Rockingham hosted the second IHRA race on May 6, the Pro-Am Championships. Pulde ran well but failed to make the finals. The NHRA Cajun Nationals had an eight-car field that made qualifying tough. Pulde made the show and beat Jim White in the first round, with an engine destroying 5.99/238. Unfortunately, he could not race Meyer in the semifinals due to the damage. He had another semifinal finish at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. Pulde had downed Tom McEwen in round two with a 5.83/227.84 before losing to Meyer in the semis. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #15 with a 6.00/234.98, but in the first round, McEwen's 5.93/247 stopped his off pace 7.39/120. Dale got a final round appearance at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. He qualified #2 with a 5.86 and made it into the final, but the car broke, and Hawley soloed to win in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He qualified #6 with a 5.87/232.55 at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. His 6.08/227.84 lost to eventual winner Raymond Beadle's 5.96/247 in the "Blue Max." After Denver, he was still holding in the seventh spot in the NHRA points. Pulde qualified well at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals, but he lost early in eliminations. The next NHRA event on the schedule was the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. Dale qualified #4 and lasted until round two before losing to Jim Head. Dale ran 5.86/247 at ADRA Dragway 42. Photo from Indy 1984.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1984. Former Billy Meyer 82 Pontiac Firebird. At Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals on August 26, Smart qualified #11 with a 6.01/229.99. He failed to reach the finals, but it was still a good outing for the newcomer to the Funny Car ranks. Jody made his NHRA Funny Car debut at Indy for the US Nationals. He did pretty well, qualifying #6 with a 5.78/256.41. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to eventual winner Jim Head. A week later he was at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals where he qualified #2, but lost early.

Notes: Mike qualified #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.341/230.17. He had problems in the first round and shut off to a 7.336/129.68 that lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.33/207. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field at the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.32/228.42. In the opening round, his off-pace 7.13 fell to Tripp Shumake's 6.22. In April, he competed at OCIR's 64-car show. All cars were to make two passes with the two cars with the lowest ETs meeting in the final. In his first race, his 6.29/218.97 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.04/238. In the second race, he had no opponent, so he made a 6.24/188.67 solo. His times were not good enough to advance to the final. A week later (April 9), OCIR held another 64 car show run in the same format. Mike smoked the tires in his first race and shut down against Henry Harrison. In his second race, his 6.26/223.32 beat a blower popping Ray Romund. Mike made the trip to NHRA Brainerd and was the second alternate at 6.330/227.27. He was the first alternate at the World Finals at 5.970/241.93, but he got into the program. He lost to Billy Meyer in round one, 5.96/229 to 6.107/227.84.

Notes: Lou's season didn't start the greatest as he was involved in a crash at Pomona during the running of the NHRA Winternationals. He and Lee Zeinert got together at mid-track. The damage was light, being mostly fiberglass, and both drivers were OK. |
