Notes: Dominic qualified #7 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.45/263.64. In the opening round, his 5.48/258.76 lost to Scott Kalitta's 5.46/264. Shortly after that (July 1), he was at New York International for the IHRA Empire Nationals. Thirteen FCs showed up and attempted to qualify for the eight-car field. Santucci's 5.91/254.50 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, his opponent, low qualifier Jerry Caminito broke, and Dominic's tire-shaking 5.99/253.74 advanced. Richard Hartman smoked the tires against him in the semi-final, and Santucci ran 5.68/262.26 to win. He faced Chuck Etchells in the final, and Santucci set both Low ET and Top Speed to win at 5.65/263.79. The speed was also a new track record. The following week, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.44/272.64 qualified #10. He lost to eventual winner Etchells in the first round. He was at Atco Raceway in August for the IHRA Eastern Nationals. In the first round, he ran Carl Ruth, who was debuting his new '56 Ford. Dominic's 5.47/270.04 beat Ruth's 6.05. He broke against Etchells in the semi-final. Also in August, Dominic won the Polaroid US All-Pro Funny Car Championships at Englishtown, defeating Richard Hartman in the final. He also ran well at Maple Grove in September for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where he qualified #9 at 5.36/271.73. But once again, Etchells stopped him in round one. A week later (September 23), he was at Darlington for the IHRA U.S. Open Championships. He qualified second, and in round one, his 5.87/217.77 took out Bobby Lagana. He lost to Freddie Neely in the semi-final. Dom also ran 280 at Epping on September 9 and 273.88. He won the IHRA Empire Nationals at Empire International Raceway in 1990.

Notes: Denny was at Martin, Michigan, for a sixteen-car show in June. While he didn't make the final, he did run impressive times of 6.27 and 6.28. Indy 1977 was a quick field. Savage and the Hustler were the second alternate at 6.248. But it made Coil realize that if they were going to run national events, he had to take a different approach. Due to finances, it had to happen gradually, but just few years later, they qualified number one at the Winternationals and went on to win two world championships. — Paul Stenquist

Notes: Did not run any NHRA national events in 1978. | Bob was at Englishtown on May 7 for the NHRA Division One Opener. In his first-round race, it was Monza vs. Monza his 6.77/199.11 beat Carl Ruth's 7.48/163. But in the semifinals, his off-pace 7.54/163.93 lost to yet another Monza bodied car, Les Cassidy, who won with a 6.64/177. He was at Maryland International on June 25 for the third NHRA Division One race. A 8.13/137 advanced in the opening round when his opponent, John Camamis, had problems. But in the semifinal, eventual winner Frank Mancuso's 6.85 beat his slowing 12.97.

Notes: This was the only Ford bodied car the "Chi-Town Hustler" team ever ran. Pete Williams came out of a six-year retirement to drive for the team. He had last driven an Funny Car back in '72 when he filled in for Pat Minick who was sick for a couple of races. Pete qualified #6 with a 7.58/195 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A first-round 6.89/213 lost to Denny Savage's 6.65/202. In April the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Williams' 6.43/209 qualified #3 behind Dale Pulde and Savage. He soloed with a 6.64/191 in the first round, when Ken Smith broke on the line. Pete also had an easy run in round two when Al Bergler shut down. Pete advanced with a 6.79/210. But in the semifinals, he had problems and shut down to an 8.04/157 that lost to eventual winner Savage's 6.56/225. Napierville held an Funny Car show and Pete had one of the four cars there. He smoked the tires and lost against Savage in his first race, but in his second race he set a Napierville track speed record of 231.26 in beating Paul Smith's "Entertainer". He won the IHRA Dixie Nationals in Atlanta in May. Pete qualified second with a 6.36 and ran times of 6.54 in round one, a 6.45 in round two, and a semifinal 6.51. In the final, he beat Savage's 6.47/226 with a 6.45/215.82. He won the next IHRA event as well, the Springnationals at Bristol. There he qualified #4 with a 6.38. A first-round 6.26 beat Paul Smith. In round two, he beat Mike Miller with a 6.49/206.42. A semifinal 6.36/213.77 beat Les Cassidy's ailing Monza. In the final, he met Savage again in the Powers Steel Camaro. This time, Pete took the victory with a 6.42/222.77 beating Denny's 6.63/196. This win put him in the IHRA Funny Car points lead. A few days later (June 21), the team was at Englishtown for the Crazy Eddie Night of Thrills event. Williams ran 6.18/212.26 in his first race over Larry Fullerton's "Trojan Horse" and a 6.45 won his second race when Dodger Glenn broke in the "Frantic Ford". Gary Burgin had run 6.16 earlier and the final came down to these two. It was a close race, but Williams' 6.20/224.43 got the victory over Burgin's 6.23/232. The next IHRA race was in Milan in July for the Northern Nationals. A 6.31/205.01 qualified #2. But in the first round, he faced Savage and he had problems and shut off on the line, giving Savage a solo into round two. The next stop was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. There were 21 cars there and all ran the first-round with the eight lowest ET's advancing into round two. Pete just made the second round with his 6.35 being the slowest of the eight that qualified. In the next round, the car went into a huge wheelstand and lost to Bob Pickett. That showing was followed up with a runner-up finish at the New England Championships. Pete was running well, beating Bruce Larson in the semifinals with a 6.18/209, but another 6.18/209 in the final lost to a quick-leaving Billy Meyer who won with a 6.22/230. It was then back to Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. Pete qualified #4 in the eight-car show and he beat Al Herring in round one. A semifinal 6.47 beat points contender Savage and moved him into the final against Pulde. Pete ran 6.51 in the final, but it was good for the runner-up spot as Pulde got out on him and won with a 6.52.

Notes: This was Jungle's last car. Jungle died in a head-on collision with a bus on September 9, 1977, at age 32. Photo from Englishtown, late Summer 1977, courtesy "Berserko Bob" Doerrer. | Liberman was at OCIR's season opener in January. Unfortunately, the car went up in flames on a 7.99/110 in his first-round race against Jim Dunn, who won with a 7.03/177. JJ was ok. At Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, an easy 7.07 qualified #10 for the show. But in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.82 lost to John Collins' 6.60. His next stop was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 6.340/222.22 qualified #9, but he smoked the tires to a 7.865/209.79 in the first round, that lost to the eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.07/225. He was scheduled to appear at Fremont for the East vs. West meet, but he failed to show. Jim attempted to qualify at Columbus and Englishtown for the NHRA Springnationals and Summernationals. His 6.54 at Columbus was the 7th alternate, and his 6.55 at E-town was the 3rd alternate. Jim ran 6.31 at Fremont per Mike Gagnon. | I saw Jim at Seattle for the SIR 64 Funny Cars event. I think it was Jungle's last west coast appearance. - Joe Moore
