Notes: Jim was at Englishtown on July 5 for its Funny Car Spectacular. The race featured ten FC's each running two races, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. In his opening race, Jim ran 6.19/214.28 to beat Tommy Ivo's 6.62/197. He had problems on his second run, and he shut down to 8.77/88.75, losing to Les Cassidy's 6.63. Denny Savage had set Low ET at 6.11, but his car broke and could not run in the final. Tom McEwen had second Low ET with a 6.17, but he also sat with a broken car. Ed McCulloch was next at 6.18, but wouldn't you know it: his car could not run the final. So that moved Adolph into the final to face Gary Burgin, who had made it with a 6.18. Jim tried hard in the final, but the car got loose, and he shut off while Burgin motored to 6.20 for the victory. Shortly after that, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Division Four final. Jim set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.42/205.01. Only six cars showed, and in the first round, his 6.67/198 beat Ezra Boggs' 7.03/208 in the "Moby Dick" Corvette. He then got an easy solo in the semifinals due to the short field. In the final, his car broke, and Tom Anderson soloed for the victory at 19.49. DNQ at Indy for the US Nationals at 6.313/220.04. Jim also failed to qualify at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals. |

Notes: Jake was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One race. In the first round, his 6.55/211.26 beat John Speelman's 6.70/207. In the semifinal, he improved to 6.46/218.44 to defeat low qualifier Roy Harris' 6.64/159. He faced Jim Adolph in the final, and Jake got the victory over the "Shady Glenn" Volare. It was rumored to be a former Barry Setzer Vega chassis. With the Mustang shell, this was the former Gary Richards Eastern Raider. Jake did not run any NHRA national events in 1979. | Crimmins parked the car mid-1979 due to lack of funding. - David Hapgood |

Notes: Gerry ran this car at the Irwindale Grand Premiere on January 12. He qualified #2 with a 6.56, but got out of shape and lost to Jim Dunn in the first round. Jim's new Satellite broke on the run and Gerry was reinstated for round two where eventual winner Gordie Bonin beat him. |

Notes: At the Irwindale Grand Premiere, Halloran qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field. In the first round, his 6.59/221.12 lost to Jim Liberman's 6.51/207. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Mike won the OCIR Nitro Championships in July. He ran 6.36 and 6.52 on his way to the final where he met and beat Neil Leffler in Jim Terry's Mustang for the title. It wasn't long after that, he won again at OCIR for the PDA Championships. It was a twelve car show, and he ran a best of 6.56/222.22 (Top Speed) on the way to the final where he met with Dave Condit in the "L. A. Hooker." Both drivers had trouble in the final, but Mike's 8.46/171.42 got the victory over Dave's 9.07/123. |

Notes: Tom McEwen was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified on the "bump", but lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover in the first round. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.30/231.95 qualified #7 and he beat alternate John Force in the opening round with a 6.31/232.55. In the second round, he lost a motor and the race to Hoover. He then went to LaPlace for the NHRA Division 4 race where he got back at Hoover by beating him in the final for the victory. The rain delayed NHRA Cajun Nationals only had an eight-car field. Tom ran 6.46/227.27 to get the last spot in the show, but a first-round 6.43/224.43 lost to Force's 6.40/223. Early in June, he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, where his 6.49 qualified #3 in another eight-car show. He beat John Collins before losing to Billy Graham in the semifinal. Next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.31/220.58 qualified #15 and a 6.53/214.28 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.41/233 in the first round. He followed that up with a runner-up finish at the North American Grand Nationals at Detroit. A strong 6.22/217 beat Tom Prock in the "Detroit Tiger" in round two and a 6.50 beat Len Imbrogno in the semifinal. But a blown engine in the final slowed him to a 7.14/146 that lost to John Pott's 6.66 in the "Mr. Norm" car. On June 24, McEwen was at Alamo Dragway for the AHRA Nationals. He reset the AHRA Funny Car record to 6.08 at 240.00 in the first round, and a semifinal 6.12/236.22 beat low qualifier Johnny White. He faced Hoover in the final who had also been running well and had reset the AHRA speed record to 242. The two both had problems - Hoover shut off and McEwen won with an 8.00. Hoover and McEwen raced against each other quite a bit in '79 and early in July, the two met for a best of three match race at Houston. McEwen won two straight. The first-round saw his 6.36/209.30 beat Hoover's 6.49/178 and a motor blowing 6.41/209.30 won again. The next NHRA event was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Tom qualified #10 with a 6.23/223.32 and he set Low ET of the first-round with a 6.15 that beat Roy Harris. But he hurt his crank on the run and was unable to show for his second round race against Tripp Shumake. Early in August, he was at Kansas City for the AHRA Summernationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.22/232.55 and in the semifinal, set Low ET with a 6.21 to beat Collins. He met Tom Hovland in the final and he overpowered the track, smoking the tires to a 6.72 in a runner-up finish to Hovland's 6.36. Another win came his way at the AHRA World Finals on August 19. There he beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the semifinals before setting a track record 6.15 at 223.88 in the final to beat a troubled Gordie Bonin at 13.08. He almost got into the "fives" at Indy for the NHRA U. S. Nationals. His 6.01/238.72 qualified #4. McEwen had scored an emotional victory here the year before and was hoping to repeat. He lasted until the semifinals before his 6.21/234 lost to eventual winner Bonin’s 6.16/240. He then made the trip to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. His 6.18/238.72 qualified #8, but in the opening round both he and opponent Tom Ridings in Joe Pisano's car ran 6.24 (McEwen at 238.72 again), but Ridings got the win light. The NHRA season came to an end at Ontario Motor Speedway for the World Finals. McEwen qualified #3 with a 6.24/230.76 and a 6.53/229.59 beat former "Hot Wheels" teammate Don Prudhomme's 6.85/229 in the opening round. But in round two, his 6.57/225.56 fell to Ron Colson's 6.35/236 in the "Hawaiian.” McEwen finished tenth in the NHRA season long points standings. | Where was the 243 run? |

Notes: AKA California Chargers. Billy Meyer made his first appearance behind the wheel of this car in '75 at Irwindale's Doubleheader event in June. Things didn't go very smoothly as he broke a rear end in the first round, against Fred Mooneyham in the "Plueger and Gyger" Mustang. Billy was driving the Keeling and Clayton car at the NHRA Division 7 Opener at Sacramento in June. He didn't get very far as he fouled away a 6.76 in the first round, against Jim Dunn. |
