Notes: Bernstein was one of the first FC racers o transport his car with an eighteen-wheeler. The Peterbilt also carried two spare engines as he entered the '79 season with four Ed Pink 1/2 strokers. Kenny failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He did much better on February 18 for Beeline's NHRA Division 7 Opener. He qualified for the eight-car show and lasted until the final, where he finished runner-up to Tripp Shumake. He then went to the Bakersfield March Meet, where he easily won his first-round race. In the second round, he ran 6.55/216.34 to beat a tire-shaking Shumake. The car got out of shape in the semifinal, and Kenny shut off to 9.53 in a loss to Jim Adolph's 6.29. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #8 with a 6.33/229.59, but he got crossed up again and lost to Al Segrini in the first round. The following week (March 18), Kenny was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 6.17 but failed to reach the finals. On April 22, he won the IHRA Dixie Nationals in Atlanta by stopping Dale Pulde in the final. The NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge was postponed by rain and run on May 2. It was here that Kenny got his first NHRA National event victory. He qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.32/231.95. In round one, he beat Bob Pickett's 6.55/222 with a 6.36/234.98 (Top Speed). In the semifinals, a 6.49/202.55 beat Ron Colson's tire-smoking "Hawaiian." The final saw Kenny face future superstar John Force, and Force had his transmission break giving Kenny the victory with a 6.45/233.76. Bernstein was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. A 6.17 qualified #2 in the eight-car field, and in the first round, his 6.19/232.55 beat a tire-smoking Pulde, but in the semifinals, Paul Smith in the "Entertainer" got a jump on him, and his 6.39/226 beat Kenny's quicker 6.31/230.76. He qualified #8 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.20/233.76 but lost to Force's 6.27/220 in the first round with a 6.36/229.00. At the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol, he again ran well. A 6.24 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. A 6.34 in the first round beat Smith's 6.61, and in the semifinals, his 6.57 beat John Pott's 6.95 in the "Mr. Norm" car. That put him in the final with Pulde. Unfortunately, Bernstein took a nap in the final, and his 6.31/223.88 finished runner-up to Dale's 6.47/234. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, he qualified #1 with a 6.35, but in the first round, he fouled against Pulde. The NHRA Summernationals was Kenny's next stop, and he qualified #6 there with a 6.20/238.09. A first-round 6.28 lost to Shumake's 6.23. He was in another final round the following week (July 22) at the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 6.15 qualified #2 for the eight-car show, and he worked his way into the final against Tim Grose. His 6.35/222.22 finished second best to Grose's 6.23/211. Bernstein followed the NHRA tour to Canada in early August for the Grandnationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.28/234.37. He improved to a 6.25 in the first round, but it wasn't enough as he lost to Segrini's 6.19. Kenny failed to qualify at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. All cars ran one round, and the eight lowest ETs advanced into the show regardless of winning or losing. He was runner-up to Billy Meyer at the NHRA Division 4 race at Baton Rouge. His final round 6.47/226.13 lost to Meyer's 6.41/232. At Indy, Kenny's 6.108/231.36 qualified #13 for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. In the opening round, his 6.120/241.93 lost to Ron Colson's 6.06/236 in the "Hawaiian." The Indy times were Kenny's best of the year. He followed that up with a big win at Rockingham for the IHRA U.S. Open Championships, where he stopped Roy Harris in the final. The following week, he was in Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. A 6.27/227.84 qualified #12. In round one, he improved to 6.24/238.09 but lost to Jim Dunn's 6.10/238. |

Notes: Brown was at Green Valley Raceway's opener in March. Ten cars ran, and in round one, his 6.49 beat Chip Woodall. Unfortunately, the run hurt some parts, and he was unable to return in the semifinal. On April 16, he was back at Green Valley for the second NHRA Division Four race. His 6.62/214.28 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field. He lost to Billy Meyer in round one. He qualified #8 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at 6.770/209.79. Larry then lost an amazing first-round match against Tom Anderson. Anderson's 6.770/216.34 just held off Brown's right-there 6.780/218.44. He then went to Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals but failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He ran a best of 6.44/222.22 at Kansas City for the AHRA Show-Me Nationals. Larry ran 6.80 at the Ozark Nats on 7/04/78. He then traveled to Baton Rouge in July for the final NHRA Division Four race. Only six cars showed for what was supposed to be an eight-car field. He beat Jim White in the "Tulsa Oiler" in the first round, with a 6.95/206. But the car broke in the semifinal, and he was unable to run eventual winner Tom Anderson. |

Notes: Jim ran at the Fremont New Year's Day Funny Car race. He advanced past the first round with a 6.98/182 when Gene Snow's Vega broke. A second-round 6.66/200.89 advanced again when Ed McCulloch broke, but he lost in the semifinal. He then went to Irwindale for the Grand Premiere and qualified fourth. He beat Liberman in round two with a 6.48/221.13 and a 6.46 in the semis, beat a tire-smoking Raymond Beadle. In the final, he faced Don Prudhomme, who dropped a 6.32 to put him on the trailer. At the AHRA Winternationals, he lasted until the second round when his motor came up ailing against Shirl Greer (6.66/223.32). Jim just made the field at the NHRA Winternationals when he ran a 6.45 for the sixteenth spot. He lost to Charlie Therwhanger in the second round. His next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. It was a twelve-car show, and his 6.41/222.77 qualified #6. Unfortunately, he boiled the hides to a 7.11/199.28 in the first round and lost to John Lombardo's 6.63/191. Shortly after that, he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He broke against Neil Leffler driving Jim Terry's Mustang in the first round. In March, he was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American West. He qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.78. A first-round 6.71 beat Henry Harrison. A 7.08 in the second round beat Leffler, but he broke and could not run in the semifinal, so Leffler was reinstated. Irwindale held its 32-car Coca-Cola Championships in April, and Jim ran 6.80/187.11 to beat Jeff Courtie's 6.92, but in round two, he had problems and shut down against Dale Pulde in the "Eastern Raider." He runner-upped again in May at the Fremont Northern Nationals, where McCulloch's 6.27/224 got Jim in the final. Dunn was back at Irwindale for the Doubleheader (motorcycles and FCs). He warmed up with 6.59/175. Leffler fouled against him in the first round, and he coasted through. In the semifinals, his 6.57 (Low ET) at 210.77 beat Gary Burgin's 6.76/208. He faced Jake Johnston in the "Pisano and Matsubara" Vega in the final, and despite running a strong 6.67/220.58, he finished runner-up to Jake's 6.57/223. In June, he raced at Sacramento for the NHRA Division 7 race. A 7.20 advanced past a fouling Billy Meyer in the first round, but he broke against Gary Burgin in the semis. He raced at the OCIR Nitro Championships but failed to reach the finals. Times and information from National Dragster, 4/09/76. | In May 1975, at a 32 Funny Car race at Puyallup Raceway, Dunn was r/u to Prudhomme's Monza. - Joe Moore |

Notes: A great-looking machine that was lost in a spectacular top end crash at the '77 Nationals in Indy. Dale broke his arm in that crash. Formerly listed 6.085/236 best, but Cars Magazine article cited 6.07/237. | I also have those numbers from GVR for '77, but wasn't sure if the whole 'timing' thing at GVR was legit now. If those numbers were still considered sketchy, I found a 6.18 at Union Grove and a 234.98 at Indy in '77. - Dennis Doubleday | Ran 6.33/209.79 at PRO event at Beeline on 1/14/77. Also legit 6.192 at the NHRA Winters. On May 15, Dale won the NHRA Division 4 race at Houston. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.49. Due to his low qualifying run, he got the odd-lot solo in round one, and ran 6.58. A 6.56/208 beat Billy Meyer in the semifinals. Emery faced Gordon Mineo in the final and he got the victory with another 6.49 at only 183.67 over "Flash Gordon's" 6.60. |

Notes: Beautiful car. Despite stock stroke motor, set Top Speed everywhere it went. Photo from Gainesville, FL-1978. | After a great '77 season, the '78 season was very humbling to Dale Pulde and Mike Hamby. They purchased a new car just because of all the runs they put on their last one. The car came from Plueger and he had changed his chassis jig so that the engine sat higher and the frame was narrower. According to Pulde, “he never liked this car.” It was very hard on parts. Pulde had also purchased 200 sets of bad oil rings from a manufacturer that were killing the cylinder walls. Despite the setbacks, he did win his first NHRA National event this season. Their season started badly when they failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. But things turned for the better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Dale ran 6.29/241.93 (Top Speed) to qualify #3. An opening round 6.35/224.43 beat Tom Hoover and in round two his 6.37/234.37 beat Tripp Shumake's 6.44. Another 6.37 at 236.84 beat Don Prudhomme's 6.54/212 in the semifinals. He faced Billy Meyer in the final and Dale picked up his first NHRA victory with a 6.42/234.37 over Meyer's 6.52/213. Hamby claimed that they "never had the valve covers off" after the win. It looked like it was the start of a great season when they went to Darlington the following week (March 19) for the IHRA Winternationals and won that too. The track was bad and Dale's 6.88/221.67 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. A 6.49/224 in the first round, beat Les Cassidy while a semifinal 6.44/228.42 beat Larry Fullerton's 6.97/208 in the "Trojan Horse.” He ran alternate Frank Oglesby in the final and won easily with Low ET and Top Speed at 6.35/229.00. The team then went to Seattle in April for its opening race of '78 and won that too. A final round 6.49 beat Tommy Ivo's 6.64. Pulde also set Top Speed at 231. The next day he won the Portland Opener. Once again, it was Pulde against Ivo and this time they both smoked the tires, but Pulde's 6.96 beat Ivo's 7.23. Earlier, Dale had set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.38/233. At Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, Dale set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.35/233. A first-round 6.59/223 beat Murf McKinney and in round two, his 6.49 advanced when Jimmy King fouled. He soloed with a tire-smoking 11.27/79 in the semifinals when Dennis Lockaby failed to show. But in the final, Dale had problems and shut off against Denny Savage who went on to win with a 7.12/223. In May, the "War Eagle" was at Blaney for a four-car show. Dale ran 6.48 and 6.45/217.06 (Low ET and Top Speed) while beating Shirl Greer and Fullerton. He was declared the winner of the event. On May 21, the team was in Atlanta for the IHRA Dixie Nationals. Pulde qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.32, but he was upset in the first round, when Savage's 6.26 beat his 6.35. The next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.29/232.56 qualified #11, but Dale fouled against Gary Burgin in the first round. The following week (June 18) found the team at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Dale qualified #7 with a 6.51, but picked up to a 6.33/231.95 in the first round, to beat Larry Gould's SOHC-Ford powered car. A solo 6.53 advanced in round two when Roger Lindamood broke on the line. But once again, it was Savage who stopped Pulde in the semifinals with a 6.11 to Dale's 6.32. Early in July, Pulde was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division 3 race. Unfortunately, he was late off the line in the first round, and his 6.72 lost to Fullerton's 6.75. The team was down after not qualifying at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. That was followed up by a so-so performance at the IHRA Northern Nationals at Milan. Dale’s 6.40 qualified #4 in the eight-car field, but a first-round 6.69/200.04 lost to Lindamood's 6.64/213. Another surprise was the team's failure to qualify for the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. The team rebounded by winning the IHRA US Open at Rockingham on August 20. Dale set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.46 and then he beat Lindamood and Pete Miner (with a 6.48) to reach the final against Pete Williams in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Dale got out first in the final and his 6.52/235.60 (Top Speed) beat Williams' 6.51. | Best NHRA times of 6.198 at Indy and 241.93 at the Gators. Twice ran 6.29 as well. Did Dale go 6.15/247 somewhere this year? |
