Notes: One of four factory '65 Comets equipped with the 427 Cammer. Others went to Arnie Beswick, Hayden Proffitt, and George DeLorean. It started with a stock wheelbase, but Nicholson eventually converted to AWB configuration to remain competitive with the funny "match race" Mopars. It started with gas but quickly progressed to fuel as the environment evolved from legal A/FX to "run whatcha brung" match races. Nicholson tried various induction systems during the season: two four-barrel Holleys, four two-barrel Webers, and finally Hilborn injection. Ran first unblown 150 at Capitol Raceway. This car was sold to Pete Gates in 1966. When Nicholson crashed his flip-top "Eliminator I" Comet later in the year, he temporarily borrowed the '65 car back from Gates. (Gates won the first Super Stock Nationals with this "obsolete" racecar.) Eventually, it was sold to Fred Gendian, who ran the car in 1967/68. | Don Nicholson had an amazing season in '64 with his 427 Comet. He won 71 out of 76 match races and was part of why Chrysler debuted its altered wheelbase funny cars in '65. Don ran almost the entire '65 season without the altered wheelbase, and he more than held his own against the Mopars. It wasn’t until late in the season that the Comet's wheelbase was altered. Notes: This was the last season that the little Chevy-powered cars stood a chance against the Chryslers. New tires had knocked the cars out of contention now that the Hemis could hook up. Slippery tracks gave the cars a bit of a chance. Regals in the "A&B Speed Shop" car held out well. The unblown car qualified well in some big shows. On March 14, he qualified for a sixteen-car show at Fontana with an 8.13. Unfortunately, the little Chevy failed to fire in the first round against Bob Downey in the "A&W Root Beer" car. The following week (March 21), he was at San Fernando for an eight-car show. His 8.48/185.84 failed to qualify for the field with an 8.42 "bump." Regals faced off against Bob Harrop's Coronet on June 12 at Cecil County for a best-of-three match. The Dodge got a running start in their first race and won with an 8.18/137 to Regals' 8.23/177. After that, Harrop was given a two-second hard start, and Bernie came from behind and won both races with times of 8.32/177 and 8.34/176. Photo from Bakersfield, March 1966. |

Notes: Photo from Bakersfield, CA, in March 1966. Drag Sport Illustrated "1965 Wrap Up" cited consistent 1965 times of 7.60/205. | Ran 7.766/200.88 at Lions Drag Strip AHRA Nationals 65. | The team started the season at Fontana for a UDRA race on January 2. Sorokin lost to Herb Ries' 7.75/195 in the first round, with a 7.80/191.08. They ran again the next day (Sunday) and this time a 7.91/191.08 beat a wheelstanding Steve Porter who shut off. In round two an 8.16/147.78 advanced when Ron Hampshire lost fire in Sid Waterman's car, but a 7.81/190.66 in the semifinals was unable to stop eventual winner Danny Ongais' 7.72/196. Mike was at Lions for an eight-car show on January 16. His best of 7.93/196.50 failed to qualify, but he got into the show when the "Ward and Warye" dragster broke. In the first round, opponent Bobby Tapia lost fire and Sorokin advanced with an 8.15/190.26. Unfortunately, in the semifinals, he fouled against eventual winner Larry Faust. The next day (January 17), he was at Fontana where he qualified #1 with a 7.89/193.54, but on that run, the motor blew in the lights and the team was unable to run eliminations. It was interesting to know that that was the 389th run on that engine. The team was at Fontana once again on January 31 where he beat Nando Haase in the opening round with an 8.05/187.50. A second round 7.78/194.80 beat "Crower & Blair", but in the semifinals, the car failed to fire against Larry Faust. On February 14, they were back at Fontana for a sixteen-car show. Mike ran 7.88 to qualify and then improved to a 7.71=198.22 in the first round, to beat Dave Crower's 8.12/192 in the "Crower and Blair" car. In round two, a 7.78 beat Dave Babler's 8.07 and in the semifinals, a career best (to this point) 7.69 beat James Warren's ailing Chevy at 8.27/149. In the final he met Nick Marshall, but Sorokin's blower went south on the line and Nick soloed for the win. The next stop was at the Bakersfield March Meet. The team qualified #17 in the 64 car field with a 7.79/201.78. They didn't make the finals or dominate like they would in '66, but they ran well. They were back at their "home track"(Fontana) on March 14 for a sixteen-car show. Mike ran 200.88 in qualifying, but the car broke against Dan Brechtal in the first round. On April 17, Fontana held a sixteen-car show and Sorokin qualified with a 7.79. Problems set in the first round, and the car broke on the line giving opponent, Haase an easy run into the second round. The next day (April 18), they were at San Fernando. Mike set Low ET in qualifying for the eight-car field with a 7.85. But a sleepy 7.94/201.36 in the first round, lost to Gary Cassady's 8.08/191. Things went better on May 8 when a 7.89/194.38 qualified for the show at Fontana. Mike made it into the final before losing to Haase. On May 29, Fontana hosted the UDRA Memorial Day Championships, of course the "Surfers" were there. Over 40 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen available slots. Mike qualified and easily won his first-round race while in round two he beat a motor-blowing Don Prudhomme in the "Hawaiian" with a 7.69/203.60. In the semifinals, his 7.85/202.70 lost to Mike Snively's 7.67/197 in Ed Pink's "Old Master.” The following day (Sunday, May 30), they ran them again. Mike beat Paul Sutherland in the opening round with a 7.83/202.70, but he lost in round two. In June, Fontana held a best of three match race between Prudhomme and the "Surfers." It was a good match with the "Snake" winning the first race with a 7.56/207 over Mike's 7.78/202.30. Sorokin came back to win the second race with a 7.64/204.08 over Don's 7.84/190. But in the deciding race, Prudhomme set a 7.46 (track record) at 206 to win the match over Mike's 7.77/203.60. National Dragster (Dec 24/1965) had an article on this car with the team claiming a best of 7.55/208 up until that time. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Photo from Bakersfield 66. Bob Muravez and Goob Tuller also drove the car in 1966. The Surfers waded through 64 cars in six rounds to win the Saturday eliminations at the 1966 March Meet. Sorokin then met and defeated Warren & Coburn, the winner of Sunday's eliminations, to become the meet's overall 1966 Top Fuel Champion. | The 210.76 was Top Speed of the meet at the 1966 Winternationals. Ran 7.57/210.28 at Lions 2/01/66 (Lions UDRA Winter Championships 2/11/66). Who drove the car at that race? Also 209.30 at Bakersfield 3/66. Ran 7.62 at Irwindale Dragway AHRA Winternationals. Sorokin drove the Surfers car to a win on January 2 at Bakersfield for the Pro-Circuit Jackpot race. He ran a first-round 7.99/207.36 over Jack Williams (8.51). The following week on Jan 9 at another Jackpot Pro-Circuit race at Carlsbad he qualified fifth with a 7.76/204 in the eight-car field, but Tommy Allen's 7.55 beat him in the first round. A second-round loss came at the NHRA Winternationals when James Warren's 7.57/208.32 beat Mike. His 210.76 was Top Speed of the meet. On February 26 at Lions for the UDRA Winternationals, Mike qualified third with a 7.57/210.28, but he failed to make it into the final.
