Notes: Dyno Don's '68 Logghe car, cool Paul Shedlik paint. Don ran a 7.48 early in 1968 at Milan, but the car ended up being run by Frank. Dyno disliked blowers and started match racing his '65 AA/MP Mustang. Don disliked the FIRES that resulted from the exploding blown engines that burned many drivers. Gas Ronda's horrendous fire was enough for Dyno to get out of the funny cars ASAP. |

Notes: After Don Prudhomme and Kenny Bernstein switched to Top Fuel for the '90 season, everyone expected this team to dominate. Things didn't work out that way. Mark started '90 by qualifying #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.29/279.41 (Top Speed). He lost to Art Hendey in the first round. At Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Mark's 5.40/275.06 qualified #8. In the first round, he had a close race with Ed McCulloch that saw his 5.37/277.77 defeat Ed's 5.37/265. In round two, another 5.37 at 275.48 beat K.C. Spurlock's slightly quicker 5.36/276. Both he and opponent Bruce Larson had problems in their semifinal race, but Larson's tire-smoking 6.43/147 beat Oswald, who shut down to a 10.97/71.03. The next NHRA event was the Supernationals in Texas. Mark qualified #4 with a 5.32/282.22 (Top Speed). An even better 5.30/278.37 in the first round, beat Gary Densham, and he got a solo in round two when Tom Hoover could not show. Mark ran a wheelstanding 7.29 to advance. In the semifinals, his 5.41/283.10 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.28/278. The team's next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.36/276.41 qualified #4, and a 5.63/231.24 in the opening round beat Frank Kramberger's 5.68/261. But Oswald lost to eventual winner McCulloch in round two. He then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was an eight-car show; his 5.35/278.12 (Top Speed) qualified #6. His times were not great, but Oswald made it into the final. He started by running 5.48/272.23 in the opening round to beat Jim White in the "Hawaiian." Both he and Larson smoked the tires in the semifinal, with Mark's 5.62/267.69 coming out on top over Bruce's 5.86/247. He faced John Force in the final, and the two put on a great race as both ran 5.43 (Oswald at 277.26), but Force crossed the stripe first for the victory. Atlanta was a race Oswald would rather forget. The car kept dropping cylinders on every pass. He "only" qualified #14 with a 5.64/277.34, and he was out after the first round as McCulloch's 5.35/267 beat his 5.48/268.81 and went on to win. But as bad as Atlanta had been, Memphis was the exact opposite. Mark qualified #7 with a 5.36/281.16, beating Johnny West in the first round. He had a close race with Spurlock in round two, where both ran 5.37 (Oswald at 278), but Mark crossed the line first. A 5.40/265 in the semifinals stopped Larson's 5.50, and Oswald found himself in the final against McCulloch. He got some payback from the last couple of losses to the "Ace" by running a 5.42/279.15 in the final over Ed's 5.47/265. Baton Rouge was the next stop on the NHRA calendar for the Cajun Nationals. Oswald qualified #3 with a 5.43/273.14. He beat Del Denton in the first round, and despite smoking the tires to a 6.85/145 in round two, he won when Neely fouled. But he smoked the tires once again in the semifinals and lost to Richard Hartman. He also made it as far as the semifinals at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #6 with a 5.44/272.06 and, in round one, beat Hartman's 5.52/260 with another 5.44 at 274.55. Larson fouled against him in round two, and Mark advanced with a 5.45/274.30. But in the semifinals, Oswald fouled against White. The team then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where Mark's 5.45/268.97 qualified #4. Things went fairly well for the team. A 5.49 in the opening round beat Al Hofmann, and a second-round 5.47/267 beat Tom Hoover. Mark's driving in the semifinal got the car into the final as his 5.43/268.41 defeated Larson's 5.42/269. Oswald even had lane choice over Force for their final round meeting, but Mark had problems and shut down to 10.92/70.15 while Force won with a 5.40/267. Photo from Columbus 1989. |

Notes: Mel was at York's US 30 on June 17 for an eighteen-car show. He warmed up with a 9.12/124.48 and, in the first round, of competition, ran 8.80/154.63, but it wasn't enough to beat Pat Minick's 8.17/173 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Shortly after that (July 2), he was at Lebanon Valley for a best of five match race against Bill Flynn. It just wasn't Mel's day as he lost to the Hemi Barracuda three straight. Flynn got a four-car holeshot in their first race, and his 8.82/152 buried Perry's 9.76/147. Mel just plain got outrun in the second race as Flynn's 8.90/158 beat the Chevy's, coasting 9.95/125. Mel broke on the line in the next race, and Flynn won the match by running a solo 9.08/147. Over the Labor day weekend, Perry was in Connecticut on September 4 for an FC show. His 8.78/136.36 beat Ben Cardillo's Cuda in the opening round. He ran Ben again in the second round, and his 8.99/144.23 easily beat the 'Cuda's 9.53/149. Confirm aspiration and fuel. |

Notes: Flipped & flew at OCIR. Ran 7.45 at Lions. Mike Gagnon information. | Pickett started the season on January 1 at Irwindale's New Year's Day Race. He qualified #9, but lost to low qualifier Tommy Grove in the first round. Bob ran 7.82/182.18 in the loss. Pickett was back at Irwindale on January 26 for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, he got crossed up in the first round, and shut off giving Ed Lenarth the win. He was at Lions on February 14 for another eight-car show that had 30 cars attempting to qualify. Bob made the show, but in the first round, took a little snooze when his quicker 7.35 lost to Tom McEwen's 7.41. Famoso had only seven funny cars show up so making the eight-car field was easy. Pickett met Dave Beebe in the first round, and Beebe's 7.86/189 beat the Javelin's 7.88/182.40. On March 28, he competed at the final OCIR All Pro event. It was a sixteen-car field. In the first round, his 7.57/194.80 beat Steve Bovan who blew a motor. In the second round, he got out of shape and lost to Mike Snively in Jim Annin's Challenger. He returned to OCIR on April 18 for an eight-car show. In the first round, an off pace 8.37/182.18 lost to Danny Ongais' 7.61/184 in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. The last event this car ever competed in was the Big Four Championships at OCIR on May 2. Bob ran 7.45/195.65 in the first round, while beating Ron Leslie's Cougar, but at the top end of the track, the Javelin became airborne. The car came down hard and was totally destroyed. Bob was taken to the hospital with injuries. National Dragster list 7.25/201 best.rn |

Notes: The '68 season had to be the best for Chevy-powered FCs. Many of them were being built, often setting Low ET or Top Speed at many events. The Chevy engine was doing this at a fraction of the cost compared to running a Chrysler or a Ford. The engine lived, and it was surprising that it could not compete in TF. But many racers sure took note that building a Chevy was a far cheaper and easier way to enter fuel Funny Car racing. The party ended early in the '69 season as after the Winter meets, the Chevys were hard-pressed just to qualify at most big events, on a local level that still fared well until '70. Huston Platt was always a Chevy supporter even when they were not competitive. He never gave up, and in '68, he reaped the rewards as his Camaro ran really well. Platt took a big win over a sixteen-car field on February 18 at the second annual East Coast Funny Car Championships at Orlando, Florida. He ran an easy first-round 9.48/150 over Tom Smith's unblown 'Cuda. In the second round, an 8.29/177.86 beat Pete Gates'8.91/159. In the semifinal, an 8.27/175.51 beat Frank Federici. He set both Low ET and Top Speed in the final with an 8.25/179.28, beating Kelly Chadwick's 8.60/163. Early in April, he was at Southeastern Dragway for a four-car show. In his first race, he defeated Arnie Beswick's GTO. He lost to "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the second race, and in the third race, both he and Dick Bourgeois crossed the centerline and almost collided. On September 8, he was at Bristol for the All-American Funny Car Championships. His 8.14/182 won when Della Woods shut down early in the opening round. In the second round, his 8.25/183.28 fell to Don Biggers' 8.01/189. |

Notes: Eric qualified #8 with a 5.52/257.51 at the NHRA Southern Nationals and beat Stephen Bernd in the first round. A second round 5.72/250.41 got past Kenny Bernstein, and in the semifinals, he a 5.51/259.81 to beat John Force's 5.55/268. Unfortunately, he spun the tires in the final and lost to Mike Dunn. He then went to Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, using a 5.52/257.43 to qualify #12. He lost to Mark Oswald in the first round. Eric attempted to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, but a best of 5.63/259.36 was only good for the third alternate. AKA Eric Reed-Dowd. Photo from Columbus 1989. |

Notes: Flip-Up Funny Car. We need to confirm aspiration, fuel, and class. Edit these fields if necessary when we get confirmation. Larry Reyes met Bill Taylor in '66, and Taylor let him drive his new Funny Car. Reyes liked it as the team won some races. He continued to drive for Taylor for the next two years. He drove the "Kingfish" part-time during the '67 season as he held a full-time job at Jones Imports in Memphis. The team went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where Larry ran 8.52/172. Shortly after that, he was at Irwindale for its Factory Showdown race. It was an eight-car field, and Reyes won his first-round race but could not race in the semifinal when the car lost oil pressure. In mid-April, Reyes beat Bob Sullivan's "Pandamonium" Camaro in a best of three match race at Alton Dragway. On April 16, the "Kingfish" was at Memphis for a best of three against Bobby Woods Chevelle. In their first race, the Chevelle got out of shape and was all over the track, so Woods shut down, and Reyes ran 9.12 to win. They both left the line together in the second race before both lost traction. Reyes recovered first, and he ran 9.27/151.60 for the win. Woods had blown both head gaskets, so Joe Lunati filled in with his Camaro for the last race. It made no difference to Reyes as he reset both ends of the track record with an 8.41/172.50. Reyes was also driving at Cecil County for the three-day Super Stock Nationals. He was in the "unlimited" class for blown cars only. On Friday, he shut off to 8.64/156.25 in a loss to Roger Wolford's 8.46/166 in the opening round. On Saturday, the "Kingfish" beat Al Vanderwoulde in the opening round, but a blown rear end prevented further competition. The car was repaired for Sunday, and this time Larry's 8.19/179.56 lost to Jack Chrisman's 8.07/184 in the first round. A Super eliminator was also run on Sunday to have sixteen fuel-burning cars and sixteen gas-burning cars run separately until there was one left of each to run against each other for the title. A handicap was given based on the times run by the cars over the weekend. Reyes continued to have problems in the first round, and this time his 8.18/174.41 could not overcome Tom Grove's .5 second handicap. Grove's unblown Mustang beat him with an 8.36/166. Reyes ran 7.97/189.08 at the OCIR Mfg. Meet on 11/25/67. |

Notes: Don Schumacher Blue Cuda with the purplish paint job. Car 2 of 3 car team. Bobby ran 6.66 at Cayuga Dragway on 4/20/73. A week later, Rowe was at Atco for its Factory Showdown race on April 29. Unfortunately, the car broke a rear end in his first-round race against Mart Higginbotham. He repaired it and came back out later for a consolation race against Bill Leavitt. His 7.16/219.51 beat the Mustang's 7.80/189. He was at Aquasco in May for another eight-car show. While he didn't reach the final, he set Low ET on a 6.61/220.58 run. Rowe competed at New England Dragway's Spring Funny Car Championships in June. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the opening round, his 6.52/217 beat the "Frantic Ford." A second-round 6.59/205 defeated Al Hanna's 7.26/187 in the "Eastern Raider." He set Low ET in the semifinal with a 6.47/193 that beat Sam Miller, who was driving Frank Federici's "Shark." This put him into the final against Leavitt. Rowe was favored to win in the final based on ETs, but he threw a blower belt, and his 6.87/163 finished runner-up to Leavitt's 6.66/215. |

Notes: Ron Pellegrini built this Charger for Don Schumacher. He ordered an R&B chassis and a fiberglass Charger body. The 426 Hemi was built by Walt Ulrich, who had worked for Roger Lindamood in the past. With just a 60% load of nitro, Schumacher ran 8.89/163.86 on an early run. Late-model hemi, Torqueflite trans. One of the nicest first-gen AWB Chargers. This car preceded his first flopper. Photo from late '66. Confirm aspiration and fuel. - Danny White | I don't believe this car ever ran with a blower. - RT |
