Notes: The race car was a gutted '66 Mustang steel shell with a Cal Auto glass front end, doors and deck lid, and Tom Hanna tin. 120" exhibition Engineering chrome-moly tube frame, 448" early hemi (392 with a half-inch CT stroker), B&M TorqueFlite trans, 2050 lbs. The car was destroyed in a crash at Alton, Illinois, in September 1967, seriously injuring longtime S-W-C shoe Cook and causing his retirement from racing. Seven-page feature in Drag Strip 4/67, including the full-page color plate. 5-page feature in Car Craft 3/67, including color plate and cutaway illustration. Doug ran an 8.19 track record at York US 30. | Doug qualified second with an 8.54/167.81 at the Irwindale New Year's Funny Car race. He lost in the first round. He was at Lions shortly after that (January 8) to make some test passes. The car went 8.48 and 8.98 on its first two passes before Cooke drove it to a final 8.50/166.97 and called it a day. At the Bakersfield Meet on February 19, the Stone, Woods & Cook team ran in the 2400 lb. fuel Funny Car class and won with a final round 8.58/159 over Al Vanderwoude. He raced "Jungle Jim" Liberman on March 5 for a best of three match race at Beeline, but Doug lost two straight. On March 11, he was in Texas for a best of three match against Arnie Beswick at San Antonio. Doug beat Arnie two straight. The next day, the same two squared off again at Green Valley. Cook, once again, won two straight, running a best of 8.64/168 over the Pontiac. Another match race win came at Alton on March 19, where he took on Gary Dyer driving the "Mr. Norm" Charger. It was a good match, with Doug winning the first race with an 8.51/157.61 over Dyer's 8.72/164. The Mustang got a little crossed up in the second race, and a quicker 8.82 couldn't catch the Charger's 8.87. Cook really laid one down in the final, running an 8.32 to win the match. The Mustang was towed into Lakeland on April 2 with a blown engine from the night before. Cook was there for a best of three match against Joe Lunati. Larry Reyes filled in for the first race with the "Kingfish." After that, Doug and his crew had the Mustang up for the second race. Doug then won the match two straight with runs of 8.69/165.13 and 8.74/164.83. The following week, he was at York US 30 for another match against Malcolm Durham. Doug won three straight, turning a career-best 8.19 at 169.17 in the first race. Times of 8.22/169.17 and 8.23/169.48 wrapped up the match. Doug ran a best-of-three-match race against Don Gay's GTO at Englishtown on April 30. It didn't start so well when just before the first race, the rear end let go on the Mustang, and Gay soloed for the win. After fixing the car, Doug came back to win the next race with an 8.40/165.44 when Don fouled. Cook also won the final and deciding race with an 8.35/166.66 beating the GTO's 8.64/160. In July, he won the Supercharged Invitational held at Capitol Raceway. He stopped Dyer in the final. On July 22, he was at Motor City Dragway for a four-car show. The Mustang broke on the line against Bob Sullivan in the first round. But in the second round, Doug beat Arnie Beswick with an 8.50/165.74. He improved on that time in his third race, where he beat Paula Murphy with an 8.43. Shortly after that, he was at Alton for a best of three match against Jim Thornton driving the "Ramchargers" Dart. The Dodge won the first race with an 8.38/171 that beat Cook's slightly quicker 8.36/166.66. In the second race, Doug was ready, and when the light went green, he got a holeshot on Jim, and his 8.37/167.59 beat Thornton's 8.95/168. Doug saved his best for last by running 8.29 in the final race to win the match. Shortly after that, he won the AHRA Summernationals at New York with a 7.99/176.05 in the final. In the middle of August, he was at York for a best of three match against Eddie Schartman. Cook won two straight. This was big as the factory Comets were still considered the cars to beat. In their first race, Schartman got out of shape and shut off while Doug ran 8.29 for the win. In the second race, he ran 8.07 to beat the Comet's 8.60 by more than half a second. The Mustang broke after that, and Ed saved face with an 8.36 solo run. Shortly after that (August 18), Doug was at 75/80 for a match race against "Jungle Jim" Liberman. Doug's 8.73/165.13 won their first race, but Jim came back to win the second with an engine blowing 8.58/161 that won when Cook fouled. Doug then made a solo for the match race victory, but what a solo it was as he reset both ends of the track record with an 8.27/170.13. In September, a crash at Alton was attributed to the addition of a new rear decklid spoiler. The car had been running strong, and Cook wanted to try a rear spoiler on the car to see what it would do. He wanted the car to stay glued to the track harder and thought it would help. Tim Woods tried to talk Doug out of using the spoiler and even had Gene Adams talk to Doug and suggest another way of keeping the car planted. Adams thought that a lower rear gear might help. Doug felt that this would cause the engine to rev too high and blow. So, the rear spoiler stayed on the car. Just four days before his serious accident, he ran it into a cornfield as his 'chute failed to open due to the spoiler. At the top end of the track, he carried the front wheels six inches in the air, giving him no steering control until he popped the 'chute. He crashed hard in the lights after running 179 mph at Alton. The car was a total loss, and he had extensive injuries. That ended his driving career.

Notes: On May 13, Densham was at Irwindale for the NHRA Division 7 Opener. He ran well, reaching the finals against Pat Foster driving the Barry Setzer Vega. Unfortunately, Gary's Pinto broke on the line and Foster soloed for the win. During the 1972 OCIR Hang Ten Funny Car 500, Gary ran a 6.89 while beating Gary Burgin in the first round. He lost to Jim Dunn in the second round with a red light. Ran 6.90 in the semis of the Sacto WCS event, but lost to Dave Beebe's holeshot aided 6.91.

Notes: Gary indeed ran 6.31 in '76, but it came with his old 'Cuda in April at Irwindale's Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. Densham brought his new Monza and his old 'Cuda to the race. He had trouble with the new car and shut off against John Lombardo in the first round, while he reached the final against Don Prudhomme in his old car. But he blew the engine in the final and finished runner-up to the "Snake." Gary did not run any NHRA national events this year.

Notes: Dunn started his season at OCIR for its Grand Premiere race. The track was cold and slick. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, Jim's 6.42/214 beat Tripp Shumake, who shut down in Joe Pisano's car. He got out of shape in the second round and shut off to a 10-second time to win over Billy McCahill. He went up against Kenny Bernstein, and his 6.32/210.28 finished runner-up to Kenny's 6.21/238. Jim qualified #10 at Pomona with a 6.229/236.22 for the NHRA Winternationals. A first-round 6.18/227.27 lost to eventual winner Frank Hawley's 6.08/236 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." At Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, Jim qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.18/237.46. His 6.19/241.28 lost to his son Mike's 6.00/240 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round. OCIR held its first of two 64 car shows early in April. Of course, Jim was there. In the first round, he had problems and shut down against Bruce Iversen. In the second round, he got out of shape and shut off again against Tripp Shumake, who was blasting to 5.74 in the other lane. A week later (April 9), OCIR held its second 64 car show. Jim ran a lot better this time. His 6.17/240.00 in the opening round beat Billy Meyer's 6.19/222. In the second round, his 6.05/231.36 beat Henry Harrison. This was one of those races where everyone made two runs, and the two Low ET cars would race in the final. Unfortunately, his 6.05 was the third-lowest ET, and he didn't advance to the final. | Jim also ran 5.97 Orange County 10/16/83. | By summer '83, this car was red and ran a 5.90 single at the summer OCIR race that put him out for the night. - Joe Moore

Notes: Injected here but added a supercharger and went as quick and fast as 7.98/178. The Strip Blazer V Corvair was offered for sale by Durham in the 10/27/67 Drag Times, who described it as "one of the world's fastest unblown Chevy-powered machines, with a best of 8.35 at the ('67) Super Stock Nationals." Car was offered completely at the time, sporting Hilborn injection. – RT | On April 16, Durham was at Southeastern International for a best of three match against Phil Bonner's newly lengthened SOHC Mustang. Malcolm didn't do so well as he lost two straight, but the two raced there again on Sunday (April 17), and the tables were turned. Bonner won the first race, but in their second race, Phil was overly confident that he won, and he pulled the 'chute early only to watch the Corvair zoom past for the win. The Mustang blew its transmission and was done for the day, so Durham ran a solo 8.98/166.50 to win the match. On May 28, Durham was at Englishtown for a best of three match against Bill Lawton. Malcolm didn't run too well that day as he lost two straight when the Corvair kept getting out of shape. He made runs of 9.52/157.33 and 9.31/156.79, while Lawton was long gone with runs of 8.62 and 8.81 at 164.

Notes: Tommy went back to an SOHC Ford in the Setzer car. Setzer name used only for bookings. Was Grove's deal. | Tommy Grove loved the 427 SOHC Ford motor. Years after he retired from the sport he still wanted to build an SOHC just to see what it could do. For the Ford lovers, it must have been strange seeing him wheeling the Barry Setzer Vega, but in August of '75 he showed up at Englishtown for an eight-car show with the Ford engine between the frame rails. He beat Tom Prock in the first round, of eliminations with a 6.76/215.82, but in the semifinals, he shut down at half-track against Bill Leavitt.

Notes: Mart started his last season by running at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. His 6.65/213.82 qualified #9 for the 32 car field. He improved to 6.56/219.51 in the opening round to beat Jim Adolph. In the second round, he beat low qualifier Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer Vega with a 6.63/217.39 to Foster's 6.73/209. In the semifinal, he had a close race with "Jungle Jim" Liberman that saw his 6.62/218.97 lose to JJ's 6.57/221. Higginbotham failed to qualify at the rain-delayed NHRA Winternationals, where 58 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. His not qualifying was not because of insufficient power; it was the horrible track conditions as low qualifier was a 7.18! At Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals, his brakes failed to hold the car on the line for his first-round race against Paul Radici. Higginbotham's last race was the AHRA Grand American at Dragway 42 on May 24. He qualified #4 and, in the opening round, his 6.67/218.97 beat Tommy Grove's 7.09/205. He got the "odd-lot" solo in round two and made an easy pass, but he fouled against Gene Snow in the semifinals. After that, he retired from driving. Jim Robbs of RFI backed the car.

Notes: Hill was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he ran 6.510/218.44 to qualify #6. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.843/187.89 lost to Al Bergler's 6.53/220 in the "Motown Shaker." Hill was at Englishtown early in April for a six-car, round-robin race. In his first race, his off-pace 8.04/118.42 lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 6.83/210. He raced Jim again in his second race; this time, his 7.08/208.32 beat Liberman's 7.12/214. In his last race, he went up against Pat Foster. Pete got out of shape and shut down as Foster ran a stout 6.37/230. Shortly after that, he was at Suffolk for an eight-car show. He lost to Pee Wee Wallace in the opening round. He failed to qualify at Cecil County on April 15 for its National Open. Pete was back at Englishtown for another eight-car show. He made a solo in the first round when Tom Sneden broke in the Bob Banning car. Hill ran 6.92/198.23 to advance. But in the semifinals, his late leaving 6.84/213.77 lost to Jake Crimmins' 6.88/210 in the "Swensen and Lani" Mustang. The Hill Brothers were in Connecticut in September for its East-Coast Mini-Nationals. In the first round, Pete's 6.74/211.76 beat Jake Crimmins' quicker 6.71/216. A 7.01/213.77 lost to eventual winner Jimmy King's 6.75/216 in the semifinal. Shortly after, they were at Lebanon Valley for the All-American FC Showdown. The track was slick, and all eight cars there slipped and slid in the first round prompting the track to have all cars run in the second round, with the two Low ET cars racing in the final. Pete's 7.36 lost to Roy Harris 6.90 in the "Frantic Ford." Hill's ET failed to advance to the final. New England held its annual 32-car FC Nationals soon after that, and Pete lasted until the second round before his 6.67/207 lost to Bob Mayer's 6.68/196. He also ran well at Suffolk's Dixie Classic. A quick-leaving 6.79/188 in the first round defeated Wayne Oxner's 6.60/204. He improved to 6.69/214 in the semifinal, but it wasn't enough as Mayer beat him with a 6.60/215. Hill was back in Lebanon Valley in October for an eight-car show. In the first round, he beat Marsh Bagg, who got out of shape with a 7.35/173.70. In the semifinal, Shirley Muldowney's 7.23/136 fell to his 6.69/196.50. Hill faced the "Ramchargers" Demon driven by Clare Sanders in the final. Sanders was running well, and his 6.34/218 in the final easily covered Pete's 7.04/186.03 runner-up effort. Maple Grove held its Fall FC Finale in the middle of the month, and Hill's 6.81/210.77 lost to Jake Crimmins' 6.59/218.44 in the first round. Pete also ran 6.69 at Suffolk, VA, in 1973.
