Notes: Fred Beall at www.georgiadragracing.com recalls seeing this early Mustang funny and believes that this was a Cammer (SOHC) powered car. It ran injected on gas and competed in NASCAR's Super Ultra Stock (S, US) class. It may have been one of the original long-nose Mustangs built by Holman & Moody. Other factoids: Owner Bondy Long was from Camden, S.C. (The name "Bowani" is a combination of the first names of the three Long brothers: Bondy, Walter, and Nicky.) Bondy Long's first love was drag racing, but he fielded a series of Bowani Ford teams in NASCAR roundy-round racing from 1963/68. Most certainly the youngest car owner in NASCAR oval racing to win a championship (he was 25 in 1965), his biggest successes came in 1964/65 with driver Ned Jarrett. He continued to sponsor drag cars after leaving the ovals in 1968. |

Notes: Jungle ran the car in 69, Gene Altizer ran it in 70 & 71, Nick Boninfante ran it in 72 & 73. The driver for Nick Boninfante in 72 and 73 was Bruce Thompson. I'm pretty sure the car was still a Chevy II in 72, but there were a number of Chevy IIs running, so Boninfante aded a Pontiac front end to it for 73 and named it the Bushwacker. - Dennis Doubleday & Shane Boyungs |

Notes: Hage qualified #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.64/204.54. He lasted until round two, where his 6.68/203.16 lost to Brian Raymer's 6.60/205. He qualified #4 at the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.76/201.34. Vic Phillips shut off on the line against him in the first round, and Dave advanced with a 6.92/196.93. In the second round, his 6.79/199.55 defeated Alan Deboer's 6.90/198. He lost to eventual winner Jerry Darien in the third round (32 car field), when he smoked the tires and shut down to 9.22 while Darien ran 6.61 to advance. Dave qualified #1 at Sacramento on June 27 for the NHRA Western Regional with a 6.60/207.38. He improved to 6.58 (Low ET) at 207.38 in the first round, over a fouling Steve San Paolo. Another 6.58 at 205.94 in the semifinals beat Don Clar's 6.83/187. In the final, he faced the #2 qualifier, Jerry Darien. Jerry wasn't far off in eliminations running a best of 6.62, so it was a close race. Darien cut a great light, and his 6.67/206 held on to win over Hage's quicker 6.63/206.43. |

Notes: Red with black Logghe Stamping Co. chassis. Original body from first built to mid 69. This body burned off at Texas and was replaced by lightweight color gelcoat body known as Band Aid body. Used to win the '69 Coke Circuit. Gary Dyer drove after recovering from burn injuries in 1968 Charger fire at US 30 in Gary, Ind. | Ran 7.46 at York US 30. Ad cited him as a 2/1 favorite to win the next race and cited 7.26/197.35 bests at the time. - DD | After having a terrible season in '68, the "Mr. Norm" team rebounded in '69 with this new Charger 500. Early in the season, Gary Dyer had planned on retiring from driving, and Norm Weekly was put behind the wheel. But the "racing bug" returned and before long, Dyer was once again driving the car. Norm went on to drive Chris Karamesines' new FC. The Charger 500 body was built by Fiberglass Ltd. It was narrowed ten inches and chopped two. The interior tin was done by Lee Austin, and it was his first attempt. It turned out really well. The Logghe Brother's 125" chassis held a stock-stroke 426 Hemi built by Dyer. It used M/T rods and pistons. Crower was the camshaft of choice. The heads were also done by Dyer. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold and once again Dyer was involved as he prepared his own GMC 6/71. Up on top sat a Hilborn four port injector. The 1,500 hp was transferred to the 4.56 Dana rear end by a TorqueFlite transmission. Gary was a regular on the, new for '69, Coca-Cola Cavalcade tour. |

Notes: Castronovo Bros. Woody Car, Tom Prock was driving here. Phil Roberts was the crew chief; the number 2 is on the car as Phil Castronovo won the Funny Car World Championship in '71. Back then, the Top Fuel winner got the number 1. Funny car champ no. 2, Pro Stock no. 3. | After car owner Phil Castronovo won the NHRA World Championships and was crowned the '71 Funny Car Champion, he decided not to tour in '72 and placed Tom Prock behind the wheel of his "Custom Body" Challenger. Woody Gilmore built the 120" chassis. The car used a Keith Black-built 426 Hemi. It was stroked and used M/T rods, Venolia pistons, and a Crane roller cam. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold, and a Don Hampton prepared GMC 6/71 was overdriven 30%. A Hilborn pump fed the 92% nitro to the Enderle injection. The engine made 1,700 hp, and the power was sent to the Dana 5.12 rear by a two-speed Lenco transmission. Don Kirby did the paint while Kenny Youngblood did his touch with the rest. The car weighed 1,800 lbs. The new car debuted early in July at Englishtown's FC Spectacular race. |

Notes: Confirm aspiration and fuel. | Gary Bolger and Bud Richter were one of the first to use the new Camaro for a Funny Car. The car used a 120" chassis built by Jay Howell. The Camaro body came from Fiberglass Ltd. Just ahead of the windshield was a removable panel that gained access to the engine. Dave Puhl's House of Customs applied the bright orange paint that faded off to black scallops at the edges. The lettering was done by Ken Kruse. The unblown engine was a fairly stock 427. It used stock rods and pistons. A Hilborn injection unit delivered the 95% mix of nitro and alcohol. For a transmission, Richter chose a '67 Turbo-Hydro. The power went back to a Pontiac rear with 3.84 gears. Overall weight was 1,900 lbs. and on its first runs, Bolger ran 10.50/140. |
