Notes: Listed times from The Drag Racing List Winter 89/90, Volume 5, Number 1. Danny was at Beech Bend on August 27 for the final NHRA Division Three race. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.28/221.39. An opening round 6.26/222.13 upset second qualifier Vern Moats. But in the semifinals, Danny lost to Terry Mullins. Shortly after that, he was at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. A 6.18/223.76 qualified #14, but in round one, his 6.21/224.43 lost to Bob Newberry's 6.10/227. Next stop was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Danny qualified #9 with a 6.14/225.96, but that position forced him to run low qualifier Newberry in the first round. The results were predictable as Newberry's 5.99/231 beat Danny's 6.19/225.28. 6.188 223.76 NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/89 |

Notes: Bill started his season with a big win at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. On Friday, his 11.07 was the second quickest Mustang behind Len Richter's 10.94. They were all chasing "Dyno Don" Nicholson, who had run 10.90 in his Comet. Thirteen cars showed for the Factory Stock Eliminator. Lawton was paired against Nicholson in the first round, as luck would have it. The Comet broke, and Lawton advanced with an 11.59. In round two, he improved to 10.95, and in the semifinal, his 10.93/127.84 beat Tommy Grove's 10.95/126.05. He faced Richter in the final, and Len's car failed to fire, so Bill ran 10.92/128.20 for the victory. The "Tasca Ford" was not run again until March 28, when Lawton showed up at Connecticut's opener. Ford had put a hold on match race competition for 30 days, and Bill was here for some text passes. His best times were 10.66/130.93. On May 30, Dover held a three-car race. Lawton came off the trail and warmed up with a 10.36. In his first race, his 10.35/134.20 easily covered Doc Burgess' 10.70/132 in the "Black Arrow." He ran the "Larsen Ford" Mustang driven by Bob Hamilton in the next race. Once again, Lawton made it look easy as his 10.37/136.20 covered Bob's 10.92/123. For the final race, he lined back up against Burgess' Plymouth. Lawton really laid down a number as his 10.31 beat Doc's 10.63. He ran Eddie Schartman's Comet at Connecticut on June 13, where he won all three races with a best of 10.53/132.25 compared to Ed's best of 10.82/125. Lawton was at Maple Grove on July 30 for what was supposed to be a match race against Bob Harrop's "Flying Carpet" Dodge. This was in the midst of the factory war between Chrysler's altered wheelbase cars and Ford's SOHC-powered Mustangs. Ford wanted the Dodge to run with more weight, and Chrysler said no. So Bill had no competition. But Malcolm Durham was there with his altered wheelbase Chevelle and said he would race in Harrop's place. So the two lined up for the first race, Durham fouled, but Lawton stopped and said they would try again. This time they left together, but Malcolm lost a clutch. The next race saw Malcolm foul again, and once again, Bill showed he was a sportsman by letting the two line up again. This time the Chevelle broke its rear end. After several hours to fix, the two came back for their last race. This time, there were no red lights, and Lawton's A/FX track records on 10.49/132.15 beat the Chevy's 11.16/125. Notes: After splitting with fellow 'Dodge Boy' Bill Jenkins for 1965, Dave Strickler got one of the acid-dipped AeroChem cars built by Amblewagon. However, the car was so weak that Stricker had an off-the-record chat with NHRA's Bill Dismuke and almost canceled his program that year. he ran his AA/MP 1964 Dodge at the Winter meets as a result. Helped by noted York-based tuner Bill Stiles, the car was strengthened and began touring that spring. Strick ran the car for the season and eventually injected it, but it may not have ever had a substantial fuel load beyond methanol. Strickler returned to Chevrolet when the factory sponsorships were ended for 1966. Car was sold to Chuck McJury. It became 'McJury's Fury' with a 1966 Charger nose and ran through 1967. Found in New York in poor condition by Steve Atwell and Dick Towers. Restored, now in the collection of Nick Smith. Long Beach CA 1965 (11/18/65 Drag News) |

Notes: Injected. One of three 1965 Chevy II funny cars. Run by John Brooks Jr. in 1966/67. A 3/04/66 Drag News for sale ad says the car ran 9's-140+ mph, but unclear if 1965 or early in 1966. Not unusual numbers for 1965. For sale ad also says the car ran a 466" 396 Chevy. Fiberglass. Suffolk 65 (7/10/65 Drag News) |

Notes: Injected fuel. 109" wheelbase. Still had car when it was for sale in 1968. He ran two different GTOs in 1966 and 1967. | Class designation as marked on car, although not a true A/FX per the legal class rules. Confirmed 10.07 at Aquasco 66 (9/30-66 Drag World) | 143.31 MPH at York 66 (7/1/66 Drag News) | I got best times of 9.41/148. I would have to check to see if I had where this was run. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Injected gas, AWB. Crashed car at New York National around August of 1966. Came back with Mustang, now with stretched nose. Ran car through 1967 at least. Ran this car on fuel at times. Unsure if 9.96 at Ontario in April was fuel or gas. - DD | This photo shows the car in the later, stretched-nose funny car version. Earliest version ran carbs. Joniec was a fixture on the NASCAR circuit. he later had success racing a '68 Mustang 428 Cobra Jet in S/S. - RT |

Notes: Hilborn-injected fuel, TorqueFlite, 117" Jay Howell frame. The car debuted in Detroit July-August of 1966 for sale early in 1967. 2/3/67 Drag News for sale ad says the car ran 8.58/165.00, probably in 1966. Confirmed 8.63/163.83 at Capitol 1966 per 11/11/66 Drag News. Lindamood was at Cecil County for a best of three match against Del Heinelt, driving the "Seaton's Shaker" Corvair. Unfortunately, the Charger broke on a warm-up pass and was unable to run. Tom Prock filled in with his fuel-burning Willys. The next day Roger faced Arnie Beswick at Grand Bend for a best of three match race. Arnie's 9.17/150 won the first race over the Charger's 9.68/148.76. In the second race, Roger soloed with a 9.37/149 when Beswick's Tempest lost fire. In the last race, Arnie went into a huge wheelstand and lost to Lindamood's 10.61. September 10 was not a good day for Lindamood. He met up with Malcolm Durham for a best of three match at National Trail. Durham's little Corvair beat the Charger two straight as Roger's best was 10.58/139 in the first race, while the car could only muster an 11-second time in the second race. The car did much better the following week (September 16) at 75/80 Dragway, where Roger beat Del Heinelt, driving the "Seaton's Shaker" for another best of three match. Roger beat the Corvair two straight with a best of 8.90/157.89. He got beat three straight at Detroit on September 25, where Hubert Platt got to him. Hubert ran 8.9's in all three races while Lindamood ran a fouling 9.13/155 in the first race, a 9.11/155.70, and a 9.13/154.10. By October, Roger was getting the hang of his Charger, and at Capitol, when he showed up to race Phil Bonner in a best of three match, he was no longer the underdog. In the first race, Roger's driving got the win when his quick-leaving 8.85 beat Bonner's quicker 8.82. He lost the second race when he fouled, but he ran 8.63/163.93. He won the match with a final 8.71/162.74 when Bonner's Mustang ruptured a fuel line. 1966 (2/3/67 Drag News Ad). |
