Notes: The "Ramchargers" were a famed drag racing team that helped develop the funny car class in the Sixties and well into the Seventies. The Ramchargers were a group of Chrysler engineers that raced on the side using the best of Chrysler engineering. The team ran a series of race cars, including an altered '49 Plymouth ("High & Mighty") to a plethora of stocks and super stockers. The Ramchargers group included Dick Maxwell, Tom Hoover, Phil Goulet, Don Westerdale, Jim Thornton, and many others. This bunch began the early development of the funny car. The Ramchargers were one of the first teams to have the 2% tweaked-wheelbase super stockers, having developed a 1964 car with these alterations. That 2% experiment led to the next stage of the radical altered wheelbase funny cars. After building a test mule Plymouth with 10" front-15" rear wheelbase relocation, the Ramchargers acquired this A990 from Dodge. It was acid-dipped at AeroChem in California and assembled with a minor, NHRA-legal 2% wheelbase relocation for the Winter national events. Mike Buckel drove it to a win at the AHRA event in Beeline Dragway, Arizona. Thornton drove the following NHRA weekend at Pomona without success against the Ford FX entries. It was converted to full AWB by the team itself that spring, reappearing for the first time on May 1/1965, at York against Sox & Martin, where it clocked a 9.83 at 139 in its first appearance (and defeated Sox, who had clocked the first 9-second time just a week earlier). The car was campaigned extensively that year, culminating in an unreal 8.910 at 148.66 at Cecil County on August 7/1965, running 50% fuel and the team's match-race 472" stroker engine. This was why the car did not compete at the Super Stock Nationals at York US 30 that same day. The 8.91 time is backed up by 9.19/9.20 performances two weeks prior at Cecil County with the same combination on 30% nitro. As a result, this Coronet in the photo (shown at Aquasco, Md., in early 1966 when nitro usage had resulted in shorter Hilborn stacks) is said to be one of the first funny cars into the eights, if not the first-ever. Jim Thornton drove the car to a great 8.925/150.75 at Cecil County in 1965. The Coronet was feared by many, and rightly so. They ran the car into the 1966 season, selling it to Bobby Harrop that year when their new Dart was running. After running most of 1966 and repainting it, Harrop reportedly crashed and destroyed it under the Mike Hammer Enterprises banner. Authority Mike Guffey states this is true. The date and location of the accident are not verified. An 8/19/66 Drag Times suggests this car ran 157.00 mph in 1965 in Detroit. However, when they were selling the car early in 1966, their for sale ad lists the best speed as 150.5 mph. It is possible the times in the resale ad were noted based on the team's 426" package and not the record-setting (and unknown at the time) 472" match race engine hand-built by engineer Tom Hoover. (Info provided by James Ibusuki and Draglist.com research).

Notes: In the sixties, Bill Lawton was Rhode Island's most successful funny car driver. Teamed with Tasca Ford and tuner John Healey, Lawton won many races in the Super Stock, Factory experimental, and Funny Car classes. Lawton's biggest win came at the 1965 NHRA Winternationals, where he won Factory experimental. The win came in the "Mystery 8," so dubbed for the goal of running an eight-second time. Bill continued to race with Tasca until the "Mystery 7." Tasca left drag racing at the same time the Ford Motor Company did. Lawton continued to race funny cars on his own. Tasca returned to drag racing in the new century with an associate sponsorship for John Force. Tasca also raced a TA/FC with his son, dubbed the "Mystery 5." The photo shows the '67 Logghe-built Mustang, still running an injected SOHC 427, but the car would soon have a blower like the majority of the fuel funny cars. | Lawton was at Englishtown for a best of three match race against Roy Gay and his "Infinity" Firebird. In the first race, Bill won with an 8.09/180.72. Unfortunately, Roy lost an engine on his losing 8.19/172 pass, so Lawton ran a solo that set both ends of the track record at 7.85/185.56. He was going to make a third run attempting to better his record, but he lost a motor 500 feet off the line. Bill ran 191.48 at Crofton, MD, on June 1. On July 14, in Connecticut, Lawton ran 189.06 in a match race against Dick Bourgeois. The speed was a track record. Back at Connecticut on August 4, he raced Frank Federici in a best, two out of three match race. In the first race, his 7.68/171.75 beat Frank's 8.58/167. Frank's Corvette broke in the second race, and Lawton singled for the match race victory. He raced Roger Lindamood on August 11 for a best of three match at Norwood, Mass. It was a 1/8 mile track, and Lawton won the first race with a 5.31/145 over Roger's 5.37/152. Both ran 5.01 in the second race, but the "Color Me Gone" Charger got the win light. In the third race, Lindamood got the match race victory with a 5.14/153, beating Bill's 5.32/142. Bill was at Capitol Raceway on September 21 for a match race against "Jungle Jim" Liberman. In their first race, JJ's 7.64/190 came out on top over Lawton's 7.71/185.94. In the second race, Lawton fouled while the Nova blew its transmission and coasted to a 9.38 win. With Liberman winning two straight and now having the blown trans, no other runs were made. On November 24, the "Mystery "7" was at Connecticut for a match race against Malcolm Durham. The "Strip Blazer" had nothing but problems, and the Camaro lost three straight to the Mustang. Bill had run 7.80/187.50,8.30/189.46 and a 7.78/192.70 to sew up the match. His final speed was also a new track record. Photo courtesy Drag Racing Memories.

Notes: Ronnie Sox only ran funny cars from 1965 to 1966, but he was one of the premier early funny car stars. After a stint with Chevrolet in 1962/63, Sox & Martin got a factory sponsorship in 1964 with this A/FX Comet, which won the title at Pomona that year. They were one of the American teams that visited England in 1964, but the car was likely match-raced in "less legal" trim throughout the South that season. Sox & Martin went to Plymouth in 1965 when a deal with Mercury on personal cars for the duo could not be reached for that season. - GS | Turned 10.84/123.79 early in season to win Factory Stock Eliminator at the 1964 Winternationals. Four-page feature in 11/64 SS&DI claimed an unattributed 10.84/128.50 best-of and car "very seldom slower than 11.1's." - RT

Notes: Ronnie Sox only ran funny cars from 1965 to 1966, but he was one of the premier early funny car stars. After success with a Mercury A/FX Comet in 1964, Sox & Martin got backing from Chrysler for 1965. This car was one of the six built at Amblewagon to full AWB specs prior to the 1965 season using an AeroChem acid-milled body. | Monikered 'Paper Tiger,' Sox was the most feared match-race pilot of that era, often out-shifting TorqueFlite-equipped competitors. Weakened by acid-dipping, this car bent on the trailer en route to the AHRA Winter Nationals, requiring a major thrash at a local dealership, and bent again during eliminations. Sox dominated the XS gas ranks with this car before switching to fuel in late summer, running 2400/2700 pound trim. It was the first unblown door car in the nine-second range, running 9.98 at York in April 1965. Many who witnessed Sox's intense driving style consider this Paper Tiger the ultimate of the 1965 Chrysler-sponsored AWB cars. | It was sold to the team of Buckeye & Vernon in 1966. They campaigned it two seasons, but the acid-weakened body continued to deteriorate. The team eventually crushed the car at their facility in 1967 while salvaging some unique parts like the unique forward-mount magnesium K-frame engine cross-member, which ended up in an altered project. Documented destroyed by authority Mike Guffey through Vernon Rowley. ET 1965 (11/66 Car Craft) MPH Phenix City, Al 1965 (12/17/65 Drag World) - GS

Notes: Hubert Platt was known as the "Georgia Shaker" even though he was from the Carolinas. Platt was a moonshine runner before taking on racing. By 1964, Platt was a full time racer with the Dickie Walter sponsored "Iowa Shaker" '65 Falcon. Platt was well known for his Fords and his open door burnouts. Hubert's brother Huston also raced early funny cars, but Huston ran Chevys. Platt quit funny cars to go back to Super Stock and later raced Pro Stock. Hubert retired from racing in 1977. Notes: Dale Pulde might have only been a teenager when he began racing funny cars, but he was a very capable teenager. Some say Pulde was and is the best driver ever. The Charlie Wilson owned "Vicious Too" 1967 Camaro was Dale's second funny car ride. The flip top Camaro replaced the mean "Vicious Vette." Vicious Too was a mid pack runner with Pulde driving, usually hitting the mid to low eights. The car was powered by a 427 Chevrolet Rat engine backed a B&M automatic transmission. Cragar sponsored the Camaro, and the car ran the heavy Cragar S/ST wheels instead of the standard Halibrands of the day. Pulde drove the car in 1968 and 1969, running a best of 7.91 at 184. (Photo courtesy Bob Plumer and Drag Race Memories. Stats provided by Dennis Doubleday. Info from Bill Duke, and James Ibusuki). | Early in the year (February 2), Pulde was at Lions to break in a new engine for the Camaro. Unfortunately, he lost his transmission on the line on his first run. Dale attempted to qualify at Lions on March 22. But with 22 cars trying to make the eight-car field, he failed to make the show.

Notes: Phil Bonner was one of the first funny car superstars with the match bash "Daddy Warbucks" Falcon. The Holman & Moody prepared 1964 Falcon was built as a gas-powered A/FX, but "Daddy Warbucks" transformed quickly. By the end of 1965, Bonner had added injectors and nitro to the 427 SOHC that Don Martin tuned. The "Daddy Warbucks" car ran tens in 1964. by the time the car retired, it had run 8.94 at 155.70 in early 1966. Bonner won the NASCAR Winternationals in the Frank Vega-sponsored Falcon. The Match Race Madness section of the June 1966 Super Stock magazine has Bonner losing to Malcolm Durham at Capitol Raceway after breaking in the first round. The following month's issue had Bonner beating Durham three straight at Cecil County. Phil was a very popular match racer with this wheelstanding match bash funny car. (Photo courtesy Bob Plumer and Drag Race Memories. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info from James Ibusuki) | Phil's flying Falcon was very successful on the match race trail in early '66. I'm going to start this with a couple of losses, but read on, and you will see he ran well. He was at Smithfield, Texas, on March 27 for a best of five match against Gene Snow. He won the first two races with times of 9.57/141.95 and 9.67/143.76. In the third race, he fouled, and a 9.62/140.84 lost to Snow's 9.24/145. The all-important final was run with Phil and Gene tied at two wins each. Bonner missed a shift, and Gene won the match with a 9.22/146. A best of three match was run at Aquasco on April 17 against the "Golden Commandos." Unfortunately, Phil lost three straight. Shortly after this, he installed an automatic transmission in the Falcon. He was up against Malcolm Durham's new Corvair at Cecil County on May 1, and Phil won three straight. Then he was up against another new car, the Charger of Al Graeber. Bob Harrop drove the car at Maple Grove on May 8 for a best of five match. Phil won the first two races with times of 9.66/142.40 and 9.56. Harrop came back to win the next three races and the match. Bonner's best times were 9.52/143.08. He took another loss on May 14 at Alton against Pete Seaton's Chevelle. It was a best of three, and Phil won the first race with a 9.80/141.28, but the Chevelle came back to win the next two races and the match. He raced at the Cecil County Factory Showdown on May 22. He made it to the final with times of 9.29 and 9.32 before losing to Bill Lawton. Then the little Falcon went on a winning spree. On June 4, he ran Huston Platt's "Dixie Twister" Nova at Atco. It was a best of five, and Bonner won the first race with a 9.28/148 over Platt's 9.64/144. In the second race, Huston's 9.60 beat Phil, but the Falcon was able to win the next two races and the match with times of 9.32/148 and 9.46/142. He stayed at Atco the next day (June 5) to beat Doug Thorley's Nova three straight. Phil's best on this day was a 9.29/148. He beat Tom Smith two straight in a best of three at Hagerstown, Md., on June 10. Bonner set both ends of the track record there with times of 9.56/145.61. He had a rematch with Seaton on June 25 at Dickinson, Texas. It was a best of five, and Phil won the first, third, and fourth race to win the match. He ran a 9.65/147.54 best. Notes: Qualified #9 at NHRA Gainesville at 6.540/213.77 and dropped a first-round decision to eventual winner Gordie Bonin, 6.27/225 to 6.63 (no speed recorded). Midway through the 1977 racing season, the team of Jim Fox & Fred Frey decided to break from active participation and the hectic pace of all-night traveling and running the car 2/3 dates per week, week in and week out. With an agreement with Fox and Frey, the entire operation was handed over to Dodger to run as his own deal. | Glenn competed at the Dutch Classic at Maple Grove on May 15. He didn't run quick enough to gain access to the final round, but he did run 6.52/209 in one race to beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 6.66/206. Glenn qualified on the "bump" at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.47/222.70. In the opening round of eliminations, his opponent, Dale Emery, fouled. It should have been an easy win for Glenn, but he blew the motor on his 6.39/230.17 pass. The team installed a new "bullet" for the next round, but the car got out of shape, and he lost to Billy Meyer, 6.82 to 6.96/182.18. That was the team's last NHRA national event in 1977.
