Notes: Dave was at York U.S.30 on September 24, where three cars ran. Bruce Larson and Bud Faubel were also there. Strickler made a 9.74/153.58 warm-up pass. In his first race, his 9.41/154.90 beat Faubel's Dodge. Larson broke, so Bud and Dave raced a second time, with the Dodge taking the win. Strickler dumped a 70% load of nitro in the tank for the first time and came back out and ran a solo pass of 9.09/155.17. On October 9, he was at Atco Dragway for a best-of-three-match race against Tom Smith. Dave's Corvette dipped into the eights for the first time and won all three races with an 8.93/159 best. |

Notes: Strickler was in Miami on January 22 for an eight-car show. Vernon Jones' Mustang failed to fire in the opening round, so Dave made an easy pass to advance. In the semifinal, his 9.63/139.10 lost to eventual winner Phil Bonner's 9.16/157. He came back out later and ran 9.15/161.57 in a consolation race. Dave ran a match race against Al Joniec's gas-burning Mustang on March 19 at Cecil County. Al got a half-second handicap but still lost two straight to the Corvette's 9.21/156.78 and 9.10/156.52 times. He was at Cecil County on April 9 to face "Dyno" Don Nicholson for a best of three. Don was on a rampage at this time, so Strickler was definitely the underdog. In the first race, Nicholson reset his track record to 8.27 at 166.97 while Dave fouled at 9.67/131." Dyno" lowered the track record even further with an 8.17/172.08 in the second race that beat Dave's 8.83/161.00. It was decided that Strickler would get a half-second handicap to even things up in the last race. It paid off as Dave ran a career-best (to this point) 8.73/162.74 to beat the Comet's 8.24/166. On April 29, the Chevys of Bruce Larson and Strickler squared off in a best of three match at New York. Bruce won the first race with an 8.76/155 over Dave's 8.91/152.32, but in the second race, the Corvette's 8.89/157.84 beat the Chevelle's 8.94/148 to tie the match. In the last race, Dave ran well, hitting 8.78/159.85, but it wasn't enough as Larson got the victory with an 8.66/160. Cecil County held its Factory Showdown race on May 10, and Strickler ran well there. In the first round, he got out on Tommy Grove, and his 8.63/163.33 held on to win over Grove's much better 8.47/167. There were two major crashes at the race, one involving Nicholson and the other with Arnie Beswick. Due to the late hour, the event was called, and Roger Lindamood and Strickler split the first-place money. Dave was at New York National on May 14 for a best of three match against Larry Arnold's "Penetration" Charger. Strickler had no problem with the Dodge, winning three straight with times of 8.77, 8.70, and 8.74. His best speed was 163.04. Aquasco held a ten car show on May 21, but Dave lost a motor in the first round, advancing "Jungle" Jim Liberman. He was back at York on May 27 for a match with "Miss STP," Paula Murphy. He warmed up with an 8.82/159.85. In the first race, he fouled, and his 8.99/148 lost to Paula, who blew a rear end and coasted to the finish line. Del Heinelt filled in for her in the second race, and Dave beat him with an 8.85/156.52, but he lost a transmission on the run and was done for the day. |

Notes: At the AHRA Winternationals, Carbone lasted until round three before the car failed to fire for his race with John Mulligan. Steve qualified at Pomona Winters 67 at 7.506/208.32 (#30). The qualifying list confirms it was in this car. In the first round, a 7.60/206.88 lost to Hank Clark's 7.31/200. Steve had one of 70 cars that showed up to try and qualify for the 32 car field at Bakersfield on February 19. His 7.30 qualified #11, but he got out of shape in the opening round of eliminations and shut off against Bob Mayer. On March 5, he was at Carlsbad for an eight-car show. Gene Adams tuned the car for this race. Twenty-three cars attempted to qualify, and Carbone ended up #4 in the field. He beat Don Prudhomme in the first round, with a track record 7.08. His 7.21/203.60 beat Bob Muravez driving Don Johnson's "Beachcomber" in the semifinals. In the final, he faced Tom McEwen, and Carbone had troubles and shut down to an 8.37/186.32 loss to the "Mongoose's" 7.13/223. At the HRM Championships, his 7.68 in the second round lost to eventual winner Mike Snively's 7.43. Lions held an eight-car show on April 22 and a 7.47 qualified #3. He beat Ray Ayres in round one, with a 7.53/172.74, but he lost to Tommy Allen in the semifinals. Another eight-car show was held at Irwindale on April 29. Unfortunately, Carbone's 7.75/198.22 in the first round lost to Kenny Safford's 7.55/208 in Ted Gotelli's car. He also had a first-round loss at the NHRA Division 7 race at Carlsbad on May 7. There McEwen beat him. A week later (May 13), he was back at Irwindale for an eight-car show. James Warren's 7.26/222 stopped his 7.37/186.72 in the first round. Steve Carbone quit driving the Atlas Oil Tool Spl. after June. - Bill Holt |

Notes: Qualified #3 at Columbus at 6.325/216.86. | Car started the season with a dual element wing (first Top Fuel to run that type of wing per Dale Funk) with an adjustable top element mounted between roll cage and engine as well as low mounted side canard wings. About mid-season, the rear wing was moved to a more traditional over axle mounting. Not sure when the switch from dual element wing to single element occurred. Dale said Robert Frakes didn't like the dual element wing. | Qualified #9 at Indy at 6.198/233.16, but lost first-round. |

Notes: Haight was at Englishtown over the Easter Weekend, where he won the TF portion of the show with a final round 6.31/231.36 over runner-up Larry Bucher's 6.35/210. Howard was at Maple Grove in May for the Dutch Classic. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.27 qualified #3. An even better 6.19/222.77 defeated Ed Moses in the opening round, but he lost in the semifinal. He raced at the Nation Dragster Championships, where his late 6.19/223.32 fell to Connie Kalitta's 6.23/226. He was back at Maple Grove for the fourth NHRA Division One race in August. In the opening round, his 6.55/200.00 lost to Bucher's 6.46/219. The final NHRA Division One race was held at New England Dragway. Haight qualified for the show, but his 6.21/232.56 in the opening round lost to eventual winner Shirley Muldowney's 6.00/243. Howard did not qualify at NHRA Ontario (no times available - bump was a 6.216), but we do not think it was in the Hemi Hunter. Was it in the new (raced in 1980) Ron Cochrum car? |

Number one qualifier at Indy at 6.138/229.00. This was Jack McKay's new rear-engine car, not Clayton's Moon Burst Front engine dragster. Also ran 6.13 in the first round of the 1972 Supernationals. Clayton ran 6.25 at Suffolk 4/72 and 6.15 at Lions 7/72. Low qualifier at Lions Grand Premiere at 6.15 and Summernationals at 6.20. The 6.25 was a National Record but was retired on 5/01/72 due to a rule change. Ran 6.130 at Ontario Supernationals 72, 6.62 at Pomona, 6.21 at Gainesville, 6.55 at Columbus, 6.20 at Englishtown, 6.13 at Indy, 6.13 at Ontario. Won Phenix City WCS race 6.58/209.30. Notes: Mayer was at Famoso for the Bakersfield meet. Seventy cars were attempting to qualify for the 32 car field. He made the show and lasted until the third round, where his 7.57/194.36 lost to "Sneaky Pete" Robinson's 7.33/189. Bob made it to Riverside for the HRM Championships in April, but his 7.70/202.70 lost to Leroy Goldstein in the first round. He got back into the show on the "break rule," but he went into a wheelstand in the second round and shut off against Jimmy Nix. Lions held an eight-car show on April 22, and Mayer qualified on the "bump" with a 7.57. He lost to John Martin driving the "Savage" in the first round but once again got back in on the "break rule." In the semifinals, he beat James Warren with a 7.70/204.48. He faced Tommy Allen driving the "Allen and Huff" car in the final. Bob ran a good 7.59/209.30, but it was good for the runner-up spot to Tommy's 7.47/207. Another eight-car show was run at Irwindale on May 20. Mayer beat Ronnie Hampshire in the first round, with a 7.75 before losing to Warren's 7.39/201 in the semifinals with a 7.59/194.80. The next day (May 21), he was at Kingdon for the NHRA Division 7 race. He qualified #2 with a 7.48, but in the first round, the car lost fire against eventual winner Don Prudhomme driving Lou Baney's Ford. He had a bit of luck on his side at Irwindale on June 3. It was another eight-car field and a first-round 7.36/209.78 beat Butch Maas' 7.50/223 in Bill Crossley's car. But in the semifinals, he lost to Poindexter's 7.86/200 with a sleepy 7.59/210.28. Unfortunately for Poindexter, he ran off the end of the track and damaged his car, letting Mayer back into the show for the final. A final round 7.63/206.88 picked up the win over Hank Clark. A week later (June 10), he proved it was no fluke as he won at Irwindale again. This time he did not need the "break rule" to win. Bob started by running 7.61/207.84 to advance over a fouling Bob Brooks and a 7.53/206.88 beat Jim Dunn in the semifinals. He saved his best for last when he ran 7.49/204.57 in the final to win over Tom Toler. The "Speedmasters" were back at Lions on June 17. There were so many cars on hand that the track held two eight-car fields. While Mayer failed to qualify for the quicker of the two fields, he did get into the second group, where he lost to Martin in the first round. He made up for losing by returning to Lions and winning over the eight-car field the following week. A 7.66/213 in the opening round got a measure of revenge by beating Martin in the "Savage" while a 7.46/222.22 in the semifinal defeated a crossed-up Dave Beebe. In the final, his 7.67/215.82 covered the "Howard Cam Special's" 7.84. Bob was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show on September 9. He qualified with a 7.24/209.30, and he ran an even better 7.18/212.76 in the first round. Unfortunately, he was a little late off the line, and he lost to Bob Brooks' 7.29/215 in his Chevy-powered car. |
