Notes: Curry built the 1,400-pound dragster in 1958, using a '56 Olds engine with four 2-barrel carburetors from his '32 Ford street roadster. He ran it for the first time at Chester Drag Strip on Aug. 30. He took top eliminator honors the first time out, beating Dessie Durden with a top speed of 123.28 mph. On Sep. 21 at Chester, he won the B/D class with 118.42 mph. He also took top eliminator with and top speed with 123.28 mph. On Sep. 27 at Chester, he repeated as top eliminator with a best speed of 125.00 mph. He beat the Hyman-Easterby Cad-engined dragster, which also had a best speed of 125.00 mph. At the Jaycee Drag Strip at Greer, he won B/D class and took the night's top speed of 103.45 mph. Greer's track had a short shutdown distance, thus the slower speed. At Chester on Nov. 27, he clocked 125 mph. Photo: Greenville News, June 5, 1959 -- MB |
