Notes: Fred was in New England in July for an eight-car show. He qualified #6 with a 7.58/169. It may have seemed show, but traction was hard to come by. Raymond Beadle, the "Frantic Ford," and the "Alabamian" all failed to better the 7.86 "bump." When Kosty Ivanof broke, Bickford's 7.87/196 advanced in the opening round. In the semifinals, his opponent, Jimmy King, went into a wheelstand, and Fred ran 8.72/100 to go into the final. There he faced low qualifier, Al Segrini. Both of Al's runs in eliminations were in the 6.5's, so he definitely had the edge. Sure enough, a final round 6.37/223 beat Fred's 8.16/187. |

Notes: Doug bought the car from Jim Parsons. It was one of the two "High & Mighty" Street Roadsters. He lowered the chassis and reconfigured the roll bar. The drivetrain was a long rod, destroked 426 Hemi. It was 396 cubic inches. The trans was a Clutchflite. Doug went three rounds at the US Nationals. He lost to a blown oil filter on the starting line. Bad break for sure. He was an independent racer and an excellent mechanic. One of the more prominent and successful racers from the London, Ontario area, that also included Glenn Gregory, Bill Kydd, and Ralph Hope. |

Notes: The team began its season at the Gatornationals with the great new Dart. Tom qualified #14 at 6.876/198.23 and surprised Dale Emery in round one, 6.928/159.86 to 6.985/161.87. Eventual winner, Don Prhdomme, took him out in round two, 6.61/189 to 6.952/169.49. In May, he was at Atco for its Funny Car Factory Showdown. It was an eight-car field, and in round one, his 6.82/209.30 defeated Al Hanna's 7.09/197 in the "Eastern Raider" Pinto. He improved to 6.74/207.85 in the semifinal, but it wasn't enough to stop eventual winner Pee Wee Wallace's 6.58/210. At the NHRA Division One opener held at Englishtown, Prock set Low ET in the opening round with his 6.67/213.27 that beat a crossed-up Arnie Swensen. He was slightly late off the line in the semifinal, and his 6.94/209.38 lost to Bob Lagana's 6.97/211 in Ron Leaf's Vega. His next stop was at Maple Grove on May 11 for the Dutch Classic. He didn't stay long as he lost to Roy Harris, who was driving "Jungle Jim" Liberman's second car in the opening round. The following week (May 19), Tom was at Cayuga, Ontario, for the second NHRA Division One race. Prock had set Low ET at 6.76 on his way to the final. There he ran Wallace for the title. The two had a great race, but Wallace's 6.79/209 got the better of the "Custom Body's" 6.84/203.61. Prock's 6.523/222.77 qualified #6 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. In round one, his 6.579/221.13 beat Paul Radici's off-pace 7.04/173. He had problems in round two and shut down to a 10.21 against eventual winner Gene Snow's 6.86/180. Shortly after that (June 22), he was at Maple Grove for the third NHRA Division One race. Eighteen cars had shown for the eight-car field, and he qualified #6. In the opening round of competition, his 6.56/217.91 fell to Al Segrini's 6.54/220. Connecticut held a six-car show that had all six cars make three runs. In Tom's first race, his quicker 6.63/218.44 lost to Roy Harris' 6.68/213. He defeated Frank Federici's "Shark" Corvette in his second race with a 6.81/184.72. He also won his last race with a 6.99 that beat Harris' 7.07. Tom's 6.63 was good for Low ET of the meet. New England hosted an eight-car show where the cars had difficulty "hooking up." Prock qualified #7 with a 7.73/114. The "bump" was 7.86, and Raymond Beadle and Harris were among the non-qualifiers. Even though Prock picked up to a 6.94/162 in the opening round, he lost to Russell Long's 6.64/214. On July 3, he raced at Englishtown's Funny Car Spectacular event. Twelve cars were competing, and after the first round, the four lowest ETs advanced to the semifinal. Prock's 6.61/215.82 over Bill Leavitt was the slowest of the four cars that advanced. In the semifinal, his 6.68/211.26 beat Tommy Grove's ailing 10.24. He lined up beside the Vega of Raymond Beadle in the final. Unfortunately, his 6.72/213.77 finished second best to Beadle's 6.65/192. He was back in Englishtown in the middle of the month for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.564/222.77 qualified #10, but in round one, he slowed to a 6.863/190.67 that lost to Don Schumacher's 6.32/217. He returned to Maple Grove on July 25 for its All-American Series event. It was a sixteen-car field, but in the first round, his 6.63/204.08 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.45/205. A couple of days later, he was at York US 30 for the Super Stock Nationals. In the opening round, Prock's 6.95/213.27 defeated Kosty Ivanof's 7.03/193, but he fouled away a 6.80/214 in the semifinal against Snow. The "Custom Body" team was at Niagara International for an eight-car show early in August. Once again, Prock fouled, this time in the first round, with a 7.10/201.79. His opponent, Denny Savage, driving the "Hawaiian," advanced with a 6.79/190. Tom later returned for a consolation race against Schumacher, which he won with a 6.79/196. Prock and his crew worked really hard at Connecticut Dragway for the New England Summer Funny Car Championships. This was a sixteen-car show, and Tom soloed with a 6.54/223.88 (Top Speed) in the first round when Ron Leaf's Vega broke. He blew the rear end in round two while beating Jimmy King with a 6.58/207.85. Prock and his crew had to swap out another rear end to make the semifinal. The car broke yet another rear end in that race, and Tom lost to Al Segrini. It was then off to New York National for the PRO National Challenge race. Jim Nicoll lost fire in the opening round, so Prock soloed at 6.74/174.08. In the second round, his 6.66/166.35 fell to Don Prudhomme's 6.29/186. Tom was the fifth alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.568/223.32. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year. Times and info from National Dragster, 8/23/74. Ran 6.57 at Indy US Nationals 9/74, 6.87 Gainesville, 6.52 Columbus, 6.56 Englishtown. Ran 214.20 at Lebanon Valley in August. |
