Notes: Petersen was at Fremont for their New Year's Day race. He qualified #2 with a 6.61, but he lost to Gary Ormsby in the first round. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he lasted until round three, scoring a first-round victory with a 6.69 and a second-round 6.58 over Rick Ramsey's 6.58, but in the third round, Carl Olson beat him. On March 19, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.43 qualified #3, and he ran a career-best (to this point) 6.41 in the first round, to beat Bill Wigginton's 6.63. In round two, he soloed with a 15.82 when Jimmy King failed to show (broke). Herm's 392 failed to fire in the semifinal, giving Clayton Harris a single into the final. Herm made history by scoring the first major win for the Donovan motor by winning the PDA Championships at OCIR. He beat Don Garlits' 6.63 with a 6.42 in the first round, before losing to Fred Mooneyham's 6.62/212 in the second round with a quicker 6.58/217.91. He got back in on the break rule and made the best of it by dropping Randy Allison's 6.57/184 with a 6.37/222.77 in the third frame (32 car field). In the semifinal, he met Mooneyham again. This time, he made sure to put him outrunning a 6.24 (Low ET) at 220.04 over Fred's 6.58/229. In the final, he defeated Tom McEwen for the victory. Also, 6.24 & 6.26 at Lions Last Drag Race. 6.26/221.67 at Ontario Supernationals 72, plus 6.293/220.04 at Indy 1972. Info from National Dragster, 10/29/71. Ran 6.16 at Lions, 6.79 at Pomona, 6.41 at Gainesville, 6.45 at Columbus, 6.62 at Englishtown, and 6.147 during eliminations at Indy. Ran 226.13 at Indy and 228.42 at the Orange County Nitro Championships. |

Notes: First paint of 73. Qualified in a field of Top Fuel cars at OCIR on 5/12/73 with a 6.72. Moved to Fresno in 74? Ran a 6.40 runner-up at Indy US Nationals on 9/73 Ran 6.37 at Portland. | After his tremendous '72 season, McCulloch hoped for more success for '73. It wasn't to be. The year was good for him, but it was hard to top such a winning season as he had the year before. Ed started the season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He ran well, but failed to reach the finals. At Pomona, he barely made the show, qualifying on the "bump" spot. The track was not good, and he beat Leroy Chadderton in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, with a 7.25/204. But in the second round, his 7.82/136 lost to Jim Murphy's 7.35/176. He did not qualify well at the Bakersfield March Meet either (#10), but he advanced past round one when Bill Leavitt fouled against him. A 7.48 in round two beat Gerry Glenn in John Lombardo's car and in the semifinals, his 7.42 beat Mike Van Sant in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. He was the underdog in the final against Tom Hoover who had run 7.15 and 7.17 in the last two rounds and sure enough, Tom's 7.14/218 in the final gave Ed the runner-up spot with a 7.57/196. Times were more "normal" at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He ran 6.46/219.51 to qualify #3, and he beat Kosty Ivanof in the first round. Gene Snow shut off against him in round two and McCulloch advanced with a 6.63, but he hurt his motor while winning. He ran out of time to repair for his semifinal race so Don Schumacher soloed into the final. Ed then won a sixteen-car show at Miami near the end of March. He qualified #2 with a 6.76 and in the final, he beat Al Marshall driving Dale Creasy's Mustang. Another win came in early April at Seattle's Northwest Open. He qualified #1, set both ends of the track record, and went on to beat Kenney Goodell in the final. On April 21, McCulloch was at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. It was a 32 car field and Ed set Low ET in round two with a 6.56. In the third round, his 6.81/211 lost to Danny Ongais' 6.73/218 in the "Vel's Parnelli Jones" Cuda. Seattle held its first Funny Car event in April, and Ed set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.52/218, but in the final, he was a little slow off the line and his 6.56/218 lost to Gordie Bonin's 6.58/217. As noted, at OCIR's Constructor's Championships, Ed was the only Funny Car to qualify in a field of dragsters. His 6.72 qualified #23 in the 32 car show. He lost to John Stewart in the first round. |

Notes: Jeb Allen, at age 18, won the NHRA Summernationals in this car. This was the last Top Fuel car to cross the finish line, in competition, at Lions Dragway, a losing effort to Carl Olson in the final. Jeb ran a 6.38 and a bunch of 6.40s in that effort. Runner up to Flip Schofield at IHRA Dragway 42 in August 72. Note - this was the Allen family's first RE car, Woody chassis, initially powered by a 392, but soon switched to the late model hemi. 6.35 Tri-City, 6.66 Columbus, 6.33 Englishtown, 6.33 Indy. 6.46 NHRA Amarillo |

Notes: King was in New England in June for its Spring Funny Car Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the first round, his 6.95/193 beat Arnie Swensen's Mustang. In round two, a better 6.80/214 lost to the race's eventual winner Bill Leavitt's 6.70/211. Shortly after that, he was in Connecticut for its first sixteen-car show of the season. King ran 7.30/178 in the opening round to beat the "Freedom Machine," but he fell to Lew Arrington's "Brutus" in round two. It wasn't long before he was back in New England for another sixteen-car show. In the opening round of eliminations, his 7.13/199 advanced over Shirley Muldowney's ailing Satellite. But in round two, his 6.91/208 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.89/208. Back at Connecticut for its Summer Funny Car Championships, Jimmy didn't hang around long as his 7.11/199.55 in the first round, lost to Dean LaPole's 7.16/205 in the "King Camaro." King was at Englishtown on July 4 for its Funny Car Spectacular. But once again, he left early as his off-pace 7.93/161.29 in the opening round lost to Pat Foster's 6.36/209 in the Barry Setzer Vega. Jimmy had one of the four Funny Cars competing in a match at Connecticut in September. In his first race, he ran 6.76/200.89 over Raymond Beadle, driving one of Don Schumacher's cars. In his second race, King ran 6.65/215.31 to beat Bill Leavitt's 6.76/171, and he went unbeaten in his third race when Tom Prock broke, and Jimmy soloed with a 6.87/204.54. Match racer. The 130" WB was too long for legal Funny Car competition. |
