Notes: The famed "Nitro Molecule" paint job is shown. The paint faded as the year went along to a peach color. Early in the season, the "Brutus" Mustang suffered a lot of breakage. The car was going through rear ends, transmissions, and engines. But he got it together at Englishtown in July for its FC Spectacular. It was an eight-car show, and he won it with times of 6.78/213.27, 6.63/214.28, and 6.83/211.76 in the final to beat Roy Harris' 6.91/204.54 in the "Frantic Ford." Lew was at Englishtown for a Funny Car show in August, where he lost to eventual winner Larry Fullerton's 6.69/216 in the first round, with a 6.84/210.76. Lew faced his former driver, "Jungle Jim" Liberman, at Maple Grove for a best of three match in September. Arrington won the match two straight with times of 6.79 and 6.88/208.80. Best 1972 times are thanks to Dennis Doubleday.

Notes: Qualified number 3 at Indy '72 with a 6.529 and finished runner-up to Ed McCulloch. Ran 6.769 at NHRA Amarillo 72. | Bonin debuted the "Pacemaker" Vega in April at the Seattle season opener. He qualified for the eight-car field and, in round one, beat Rich Rogers. Unfortunately, he lost in the semifinal. He did better at the Northwest National Open, also held in Seattle. It was another eight-car show, and Bonin ran 6.92/185.56 to advance over a broken Kenny Martin in the opening round. In the semifinals, his 6.89/207.36 beat Twig Zeigler's quicker 6.85/213. This put him into the final against Kenney Goodell. Gordie tried hard, but his 6.91/206.42 finished runner-up to Goodell's 6.68/207. Gordie qualified #9 for the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2 (times unknown but between 6.63 and 6.68). He lost a 7.10 to 7.10 decision to first alternate Omer Carruthers in round one.

Notes: The first time Emery drove this car in competition was at the NHRA Gatornationals in March. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the field. Emery set a track record at Edgewater Park National Open at 6.53/230.76 and ran 6.38/231.95 at Bristol. | Dale won the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown on May 6. He set both Low ET and Top Speed at 6.44/222.22 and beat Pee Wee Wallace in the final with a 6.48/183.29. At the NHRA Division 3 Opener, he won again. This time he set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.44/228.42 while beating Jim Paoli. The second Division 3 race was held at National Trail, and Dale qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.94. In the first round, he improved to 6.73 but lost to a holeshot by Al Segrini, whose 6.76 got the win. On May 24, Emery was at Dragway 42 in Ohio for the AHRA Grand American. The car wasn't up to speed, but Dale beat Tom Hoover's ailing Satellite in the first round with an 8.01. In round two, a 7.12/162.45 lost to Dean LaPole's "pure" Chevy-powered car at 6.78/193. He qualified #5 back at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. He beat Clare Sanders in the "Ramchargers" car in the first round with a 6.63, but in round two, he slowed to 7.28/173.74 that lost to Prudhomme's troubled 7.02/216. A 6.61 qualified #14 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. In the first round, he advanced with a 6.56/228.42 when Russell Long's Charger broke. In round two, he picked up the pace to 6.46/229.00, beating Jim Nicoll's 6.83. Dale lost in the semifinals when his car broke against Leroy Goldstein. On July 25, Emery was at Maple Grove for its All-American race. It was a sixteen-car show, and he made it into the final before being stopped by Ed McCulloch. A 6.63/217.91 in the final lost to Ed's 6.45/225. Dale was runner-up again, this time to Paul Radici, on July 29 at the NHRA Division 3 race at Tri-City Dragway in Michigan. He ran 6.61/221.13 (Top Speed) in the final but lost to Paul's 6.54/209. At the NHRA Grandnationals in early August, Emery qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 6.71/216.34. A first-round 6.73/216 beat Harlan Thompson; in the semifinals, he had a great leave, and his 6.71/215.35 beat Goldstein's 6.70/218 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. In the final, he went up against Frank Mancuso and took his first NHRA victory with a 6.70/219.50 (Top Speed) that beat Mancuso's 6.80. Emery qualified #8 in the 32-car show with a 6.60/222.77 at AHRA's National Challenge. He improved to 6.56/216 in the first round while beating John Dekker's 6.66/225. In round two, he beat Bob Pickett's 6.88 with a 6.61/216, but an off-pace 6.91/206 in round three lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.56/197. With 50 FCs attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Dale ran 6.45/224.43 to qualify #10. A first-round 6.69/207 lost to Jim Liberman's 6.41. On September 8, he was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Division 3 race. Unfortunately, he fouled in the first round against Paul Day. Dale set a new IHRA Speed record in the final while winning at Bristol for the IHRA All-American Nationals. His final round 6.38/231.95 beat Raymond Beadle who smoked the tires in Don Schumacher's Vega. His speeds were real; in round two, he ran 6.48/225.56 over Shirl Greer and, in the semifinals, hit 227.27 while beating Billy Meyer. He was in the final at the next IHRA race as well, the US Open Nationals at Rockingham, where he runner-upped to Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer Vega. Dale finished runner-up to Tom McEwen at NHRA Ontario, where he ran amazing 6.280/229.59 best times. Info and times from National Dragster, 2/01/74.

Notes: On July 25, Goeske was at Maple Grove's All-American series race. It was a sixteen-car show, and in the opening round of competition, his 7.04/179.28 fell to Don Prudhomme's 6.52/177. Goeske was back at Maple Grove for its Back to School Funny Car race in Sept. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 6.68/210 lost to Al Segrini's 6.66/210. But he got back in on the "break rule" as the Low ET loser from round one when Tom Prock had his car burst into flames while winning his race. He made good on his second chance by beating Jake Crimmins' 6.93/196 in the semifinal with a 6.64/216. He faced Al Marshall in the final, and his 7.23 finished runner-up to Al's 6.70. Shortly after that, he was at Epping, New England, for its Funny Car Nationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Marshall in the first round. Later, he came back out to run Joe Jacono in a consolation race and beat him with a 6.55/216 to Joe's 6.70/196.

Notes: Goldstein was at Pomona for the twice rain-delayed NHRA Winternationals. 58 Funny Cars were attempting to qualify, and the track was terrible. Leroy ran a 7.4 and was the #5 qualifier. A first-round 7.82 lost to Dave Beebe's 7.47. Times were more "normal" at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There he qualified #5 again with a more respectable 6.49. He beat Tom Prock in the first round, before losing to Don Schumacher's 6.34 in round two with a 6.61. Goldstein won the Division 4 Opener at LaPlace, setting Low ET and Top Speed at 6.73/217.39 before beating Paul Smith in Fred Wells'Charger in the final with a 6.74/216.86. In late April at Dallas for the IHRA Longhorn Nationals, Leroy qualified both the team's Top Fuel car and the Funny Car first in both classes. A 6.48 qualified the "Cuda #1. He also won both classes as well as he won Top Fuel and ran 6.60 in the first round, of Funny Car over Beebe in Larry Huff's car, a 6.52 beat Shirl Greer in round two, and a semifinal 6.57 beat Preston Davis. He met up with Mike Snively driving the "Mr. Ed" Satellite in the final. Unfortunately, the "Candies and Hughes" 'Cuda broke, and Snively soloed for the win. He was runner-up at Lubbock Dragway in Texas for the Division 4 race held there. He smoked the tires in the final and lost to Jim Nicoll. At the NHRA Springnationals, Leroy qualified #10 but lost to Beebe's 6.69/210 in the first round, with a 6.91/213.77. In July, the team was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where a 6.59 qualified #12. A first-round 6.61/222 beat Gene Snow's 6.81/173. In round two, Leroy advanced with a 6.64/178.57 over Tom Crevasse. In the semifinals, he soloed with a 6.51/224.43 when Dale Emery broke. In the final, he met Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer owned Vega. Leroy got the victory with a 6.74/214.79, beating Pat's 6.78/223. Goldstein was in Canada on August 3 for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.74. In the first round, he got a single when Ken Achs broke in the "Pacemaker" Vega. Leroy ran 6.96 to move into the semifinal. He ran a 6.70/218.44 but lost to Emery's quick-leaving 6.71/215. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, a 6.49/228.42 qualified #15 (tough field)! A first-round 6.373/229.00 beat Clare Sanders' 6.52/225 in the "Ramchargers" Demon. In round two, he advanced with a 6.66 when Schumacher had a bad vibration and shut off early. Both he and Don Prudhomme ran 6.52's in the semifinals, Leroy at 229, but the "Snake" got the win.

Notes: Grove showed up at Beeline with his still unfinished Mustang for the AHRA Winternationals. He ran 6.91/202.24 to qualify #29 in the 32 car field, but an opening round 7.05/196.50 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.49/220. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he was the eleventh alternate. He also could not qualify for the sixteen-car field at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he ended up as the first alternate. Jim Adolph qualified, but his car broke, and he was unable to run in eliminations, so Grove got into the field. Mert Littlefield shut down early into his run in the opening round, and Tommy advanced with a 7.69. In round two, his 7.56 lost to Dave Uyehara's 7.18 in Larry Huff's car. On April 28, he was a Capitol for an eight-car show that had all the cars run two rounds of racing, with the two Low ET's cars meeting in the final. Grove's 6.56/216 defeated Clare Sanders' quicker 6.54/189 in the "Ramchargers" car in his first race. In his second race, he faced Richard Tharp, who was driving the "Blue Max. Grove's Mustang went into a wheelstand, and he backed out of it while Tharp ran 6.62/195 to win. Grove ran really well at the AHRA Grand American held at Green Valley Raceway in May. It was a sixteen-car show, and Grove made it into the semifinal where Jim Nicoll fouled against him. Unfortunately, Grove hurt some valvetrain parts and repaired them for his final round showdown with Don Prudhomme. Those repairs did not work out as the car failed to fire for the final, and Tom had to watch as the "Snake" made an easy solo for the win. He qualified #12 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but he damaged his engine and could not compete in eliminations. Near the end of June, he went to US 13, Delmar, for a best-of-three-match race against Shirley Muldowney. He won all three of their races, running a best of 7.09/202.24. In July, he was in New England for a sixteen-car show. The car got out of shape in the first round, and the rear almost hit the guardrail. After he straightened it out, he took off in hot pursuit of Dale Pulde, who was running 7.03/172 in the other lane. Grove lost with an 8.61/202. He came back out later for a consolation race with Fred Goeske. Fred broke in their race, and Grove ran 6.82/207. Grove was at Fremont on October 14 for the AHRA World Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.56 qualified #8. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.79 lost to Sush Matsubara's 6.50. Grove ended his '73 season at Beeline for its sixth annual Funny Car Nationals held on December 2. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.78/213.76 qualified #4. He improved to 6.68 as just 192.30 in the opening round to beat Roger Garten's 7.28/156 in the "Warhorse." But an even better 6.65/217.38 fell to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.53/210 in the second round. Several DNQs at NHRA national events with best times of 6.888/211.76 in qualifying #12 at Columbus. We remember the 6.42/227 but need to validate track and year.

Notes: Lagana was at Englishtown on May 5 for the NHRA Division One opener. He got an easy first-round win at 9.58/146.10 when Joe Jacono fouled. He caught a good light in the semifinal, and his 6.97/211.26 beat Tom Prock's better 6.94/209 in the "Custom Body" car. He faced Pee Wee Wallace in the final. Bob ended up smoking the tires, and his 7.46/214.79 lost to Wallace's 6.80/216. Bob was at Maple Grove on June 22 for the NHRA Division One race. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show with a 6.71. That wasn't too bad, considering there were 18 FC's attempting to qualify. Bob improved to 6.64/216.37 in the first round, to beat Gene Snow's ailing 6.86/156. But an out-of-shape 7.23/163.04 in the semifinal lost to eventual winner Al Segrini's 6.45/218. He also ran 6.71 at Maple Grove on 7/74. The team did not run on the NHRA tour this year.

Notes: At the twice rain-delayed NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, Leavitt qualified #7 with a 7.462/194.38. The car came up ailing in round one, running an 8.369/131.77 that lost to Tom McEwen's 7.60. Shortly after that, he went to Irwindale for its Night Opener. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 7.15/182.92 defeated Don Prudhomme, who shut down with problems. Bill Frederick was there with his rocket car, and he accidentally spilled rocket fuel all over the left lane, making that lane useless. In the semifinal, Leavitt's 8.21/103.68 beat Jim Dunn, skating all over the track in the left lane. In the final, he was to face Sush Matsubara, and track management decided to make each car run down the right lane, with the lowest ET being declared the winner. Bill ran 6.83/206.89, but then Sush ran 6.64/224 for the victory. Bill qualified #2 at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.90. Unfortunately, in the first round, he fouled against Ed McCulloch. OCIR held an eight-car show in March, and Leavitt qualified #3 with a 6.79. He beat Joe Lee's 7.22/199 in the first round, with a 7.04/189.87, but he broke and could not run in the semifinal. He was back at OCIR for the final All-Pro race, where he qualified #10 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.89. But he lost to eventual winner McEwen in the opening round when he went into a wheelstand and shut off. He was in Connecticut for a four-car show in April. Bill was deemed the winner after running a best of 6.63/211. On April 29, he was at Atco for the Funny Car Factory Showdown. It was an eight-car field, and Bill did not have a good day. in the opening round, his troubled 9.07/87.50 lost to Pat Foster's 7.16/205. He then ran in a couple of consolation races. In the first consolation race, his 7.80/189.98 lost to Bobby Rowe's 7.16/219, and in the other, Tom Prock smoked the tires against him, and Bill got his only win of the day with a 7.26/199.55. In May, National Trail hosted the second NHRA Division 3 race. Bill qualified #4 in the eight-car field. In the first round, a 6.89/207.85 beat Bob Durban and in the semifinals, a 6.92/205.94 lost to Al Segrini's 6.65/218. He won the Connecticut Memorial Day Championships, where he ran a final round 6.82/206.89 over Al Segrini. He also won the Spring Funny Car Championships held at New England Dragway early in June. This was a sixteen-car field. His 6.69/211 defeated the "Freedom Machine in round one." A second-round 6.70/211 took out Jimmy King's 6.80/214. His 6.68/221 beat Prock in the semifinal, who went up in smoke in the "Custom Body" car. He faced Rowe in the final. Rowe was the favorite based on his 6.47 semifinal time. But the "Cuda lost a blower belt in the final and slowed to 6.87/163 in a runner-up effort to Leavitt's 6.66/215. In June, he was back at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #7 with a 6.837/206.42. In the first round, an off pace 7.023/190.67 lost to Larry Arnold's 6.87/218. He got a big win the following week (June 17), when he claimed the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. He beat Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" Charger, Jim Paoli with a 6.76, and Larry Fullerton in that order to meet Ron Colson in the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the final. Colson's supercharger exploded on the line, and Leavitt singled for the victory with a 6.71/207.89. He was back in Connecticut for its Summer Funny Car Championships. It was another sixteen-car show, and he beat the "Freedom Machine" in the first round, with a 6.88/195.22. He dropped a close one to Jake Crimmins in the "Swensen-Lani" car in round two. Bill's 6.78/209.79 narrowly lost to Jake's 6.77/212. Early in July, Leavitt was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. He received no ET in the first round, but his speed was registered at 203.16 while beating Fred Goeske. His 6.90/193.96 fell to Pee Wee Wallace's 6.74/219 in the "Alabamian" in the semifinal. Bill failed to qualify when he returned to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals (times unavailable). His next stop was at New England for its fifth Funny Car Tourney race. In the opening round, a 6.68/205 beat Pete Hill's 6.82/206, but he lost to eventual winner Segrini in round two. At the Rockford Manufacturers Meet, he failed to run quick enough to make the finals, but he beat Don Schumacher with a 6.79 and a 6.70 beat Colson. On July 25, he was at Maple Grove for the All-American Funny Car Race. He lost to Roy Harris' 6.90/209 in the first round, with a 7.09/195.65. Bill was the sixth alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.56/215.82. New England held its Funny Car Nationals on September 16. It was a 32 car show, and Bill won his first-round race easily. In round two, Al Bergler lost a supercharger on the line, and Leavitt singled with a 6.54/201. He lost in round three with a sub-par 7.19/126 that fell to Pee Wee Wallace's 6.60/213.

Notes: Bill was in New England in June for its Spring Funny Car Nationals. The race had been delayed one week due to rain. It was an eight-car field, and Leavitt's 6.75/183 qualified #1. But that was as "slow" as he ran at this race as he kept getting quicker. In the opening round, his 6.46/205.47 defeated Joe Jacono's 7.10/172. In the semifinals, Jimmy King's 7.10/197 fell to his 6.45/205.94. Jacono had gotten back into the show on the "break rule" for the "Frantic Ford." It was Joe that Bill ran in the final. Bill was not to be stopped on this day as he set a 6.28 track record (at 212.26) in the final to beat Jacono's 6.77/182. Shortly after this, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 6.63 qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field. His first-round opponent, Charles Lee, was shut off on the line for leaking oil. Bill ran a solo 8.13 to advance. In the second round, his 6.50/208.81 beat Tommy Grove's 6.57/214. He lost to Al Segrini's 6.38/227 in the semifinal. Bill ran 6.40 at PRO Long Island NY 8/18/74. He also won the Epping NE Funny Car Nats with a final round 6.54/192.30 and a best of 6.47.

Notes: McEwen had a great season in '72 and hoped for more of the same in '73. While he wasn't quite as successful, it was still a pretty good year for the "Mongoose." He started the season on January 21 at OCIR's second All-Pro race. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #5 with a 6.85, earning him the right to face low qualifier Sush Matsubara in the first round. In their race, Tom's 6.79/215.31 lost to Sush's 6.76/213. The following week (January 28), he was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32 car show, and he ran 6.54/217.91 to qualify #3. An off-pace 7.30/163.04 lost to Stan Shiroma's 6.66/218 in the "Pacemaker" Vega. Tom won the third OCIR All-Pro race over Matsubara in the final. Both had troubles on their runs; McEwen's 7.72/104.77 got the victory over Sush's 8.08/159. It was then off to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The track was in horrible shape, and trying to get a good time in qualifying was tough. Tom ended up as the second alternate for the show, but when the race was postponed twice for rain, Jim Liberman could not stay, so McEwen took his spot in the field. In the opening round, his 7.60 beat Bill Leavitt's 8.36. But in round two, he lost to Al Bergler's holeshot 8.00/201 that beat his 7.72/206. He raced his top fuel dragster at the Bakersfield March Meet but was back in his "flopper" the following week (March 11) at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Unfortunately, he got out of shape and crossed the centerline in the first round, against Leroy Chadderton, driving the "Hawaiian." He then ran his dragster at the NHRA Gatornationals before returning to the funny at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. McEwen qualified #2 and then ran 7.10/212.76 over Leavitt, a 6.96/213.27 over Dave Beebe, and a 12.71/54.77 over a fouling Chadderton to reach the final against Matsubara. This was McEwen's day as he ripped off a 6.69/222.22 in the final for the victory over Sush's 6.86/221. Tom won Ontario 1973 with best times of 6.500/217.91.

Notes: Billy was still running his Camaro when he showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify. In March, he was driving his new Arrow at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #6 with a 6.36/235. He broke an engine in the first round, but his 6.37/221 still beat Pat Foster's 6.39/230 in Joe Pisano's Firebird. A new Milodon was installed for round two, and he blew the oil pan off while running a 6.91/192 that advanced over Tim Kushi's troubled 13.51. In the semifinals, he singled with a 9.32 when Gordie Bonin failed to fire. In the final, he met Dale Pulde. This would not be easy as Pulde had been running steady 6.3s. Sure enough, Dale prevailed with a 6.42/234 over Meyer's runner-up effort of 6.52/213.77. Still, not too bad for a new car. The following week (March 19), he won the NHRA Division 4 Opener at LaPlace. He qualified #2 with a 6.56/214.79 behind Tripp Shumake's 6.52/207. Meyer set Low ET in the opening round with a 6.28 that beat Raymond Beadle, who smoked the tires in the "Blue Max." His 6.37/221.67 took out Tom Prock's off-pace 7.18/147 in the "Detroit Tiger" in the semifinal. He stopped Tom Hoover's 6.81/204 in the final with a 6.71/218.44. Early in April, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven race. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.21/221.67. Unfortunately, the car broke on the run, and he could not run in eliminations. His next stop was at Green Valley Raceway for the second NHRA Division Four race. His 6.34/214.79 qualified #4. He improved to 6.25/226.13 in the opening round to defeat Larry Brown. The car broke a rod in the semifinal while doing a burnout to prepare for its race against Billy Graham. Meyer was at OCIR later in April for its enormous 64 Funny Car show. He lasted until round two before losing to Ed McCulloch.Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Cajun Nationals at the end of the month (April 30). It was an eight-car show, and Meyer qualified #6 with a 6.50/222.22. In the first round, his 6.60/229.00 fell to Hoover's 6.52/226. Billy was at Cayuga in May for the NHRA Division 1 race. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.45 (Low ET). He then beat Rick Johnson in the opening round with a 6.54/209.79. In round two, he got a solo as both Roy Harris and Ron Colson both had broken in their first-round match. In the final, he faced Al Segrini, and the two had a great race that saw Al's 6.56/222 beat Billy's slightly quicker 6.55/227.84 (Top Speed). Edgewater hosted an eight-car show that was to have all eight cars make three runs, with the two Low ET cars coming back to run for the final. In Billy's first race, his 6.40 beat Dale Creasy. In the second race, his 6.41 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.12. He ran his best time in the third race, a 6.32, but he still lost to Denny Savage's 6.19. Meyer did not run quick enough to reach the final. He qualified #14 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.32/230.17, and in the first round, his 6.40/209.30 advanced when Denny Savage shut down early with problems. But in round two, Meyer had troubles and shut down to an 8.10/113.78 loss to Tom McEwen's 6.25/215. At the beginning of the year, Meyer had switched from the KB engines he had used in '77 to Milodon engines for '78. But around the beginning of July, he ordered four new KB engines to replace the Milodon motors he had been running. Delivery was to take eight to ten weeks. He was at Byron for its Manufacturer's race, where his 6.47/218.44 beat Bill Pryor in round one. But although he set Low ET and Top Speed in his next round race against McEwen, his 6.31/238.72 lost to Tom's 6.33/214. He really qualified well at Englishtown, where a 6.060/236.84 got him the #2 spot in the field, but he was upset by Segrini in the first round. | The 6.060 was his best NHRA ET for this year, and a 241.93 at the World Finals was his best NHRA speed. Billy ran 5.99 at New England in August. Did he also run a 5.97 somewhere this year?

Notes: Muldowney had her new Satellite at OCIR in January for some shake-down runs. She never got in a good run as the car suffered from bad tire vibration. She had also attempted to qualify the car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but the track was so bad that everyone was lost on getting the right set-up there. She was one of many that failed to make the field. Muldowney made history on June 10 at the NHRA Springnationals, when her first-round 6.841/209.79 beat Jim Murphy. It was her first funny car round win in NHRA competition. Shirley qualified #14 at 6.901/198.23, and she lost to Dave Beebe in round two, 6.89/215 to 7.67/146. She went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where she failed to qualify her funny car (first alternate - no times, but slower than 6.649) and Pancho Rendon's top fuel car (third alternate). | Shirley was one of many alternates at Indy with a best of 6.71/199.55. That was her last NHRA national event. She also ran 6.70 in Dallas.

Notes: Gene did not have the success in 1973 that he had enjoyed in the preceding years. He started the year at the Irwindale Grand Premiere. It was a sixteen-car field, and he qualified #10. His 6.89 advanced when Russell Long broke in the "Tom and Jerry" Mustang in the opening round. But in round two, Gene's tire-smoking 7.20/143.54 lost to the eventual winner Jim Dunn's 6.91/210. He then went to Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #26 with a 6.86/205.01. An opening round 6.81/181.08 beat Butch Maas, who broke in the Mickey Thompson Grand Am. In the second round, Gene had problems and slowed to a 7.63/118.57 loss to Richard Tharp's 6.66/209 in the "Blue Max." That was better than his non-qualifying effort at the NHRA Winternationals (in his Challenger). He qualified #15 at the Gatornationals with the new Charger at 6.601/223.32 and advanced past the first-round with a 6.750/209.30 over alternate Paul Smith's 7.24/193. He had problems and shut off in round two against Ed McCulloch. He won over a sixteen-car field at Green Valley Raceway in April. This was big as it was probably his only victory of the year. He ran fairly well at the AHRA Grand American at Dragway 42 on May 23. Gene qualified #5 for the show, and in round one, advanced with a 6.85/190.67. In round two, a 6.67/220.04 beat Don Schumacher's 7.15/211. He made an easy run in the semifinals when Mart Higginbotham (driving in his last race) fouled. In the final, he faced Jim Liberman, and JJ took the win with a 6.86 over Snow's troubled 14.11/31.90. In June, he was at Denver's Century 21 Raceway for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #11 and beat Tom Hoover in the first round, with a 6.89. A second-round 6.83 beat Bob Durban, but in the semifinals, a 6.89 by Art Ward beat his quicker 6.87. Gene ran one of his better ETs in qualifying for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.479/210 for the #4 spot in the field. A first-round 6.811/173.07 failed to get around Leroy Goldstein's 6.61/222 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. At St. Louis in August for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, Snow ran 6.69 to qualify #5. He lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. At NHRA Indy, Gene was among a large field of non-qualifiers with a 6.65/208.81 best. He did run an excellent ET at the Ontario Supernationals, qualifying #2 at 6.340 at only 208.81 mph. Unfortunately, he lost to Jim Dunn in round one, 6.53/207 to 6.58/192.71. Gene also ran 6.60 in Connecticut. Did Gene run 230 mph somewhere this year?

He qualified #15 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but his car broke and slowed to 14.80 in an opening-round loss to Butch Leal's 10.11. Larry was at Sanair early in August for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #4 with a 9.72, and everyone in the field was at least two-tenths behind the 9.41 of Bill Jenkins in qualifying. Breaux ran well. After an easy first-round, he ran 9.73/139.75 to advance over a fouling Barrie Poole. A semifinal 9.76/139.75 beat Carmen Rotonda's 9.77/138 and earned him the right to face Jenkins in the final. The outcome was never in question. Larry did try to shave the tree a little too close as he fouled at 9.84 while Bill motored past with a 9.47 to pick up the win.
