Notes: Ran 9.130 at York Super Stock Nationals 74, 9.03 at Pomona, 9.06 at Englishtown, 9.31 at Indy, 9.12 at Ontario. | Paul had one of the three Vegas that qualified at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 9.13/150.50 qualified #11, but an off-pace 9.33/148.51 in the first round, lost to Bill Jenkins' 9.05/151. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #10, but his 9.01/151.51 lost to Jack Roush's 8.94/153 in round one. He qualified #11 with a 9.23 at the NHRA Springnationals, but he could not run eliminations, and alternate Jim Halloran took his place. Paul ran 9.06/149.50 to qualify #8 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but he slept in the first round, and his 9.23/147.78 lost to Kelly Chadwick's 9.29/146. He got his first-round win at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. There he qualified #7 with a 9.06, and his first-round 9.15/148.25 beat Lee Edwards. A very satisfying, holeshot 9.05 victory over Larry Lombardo's 9.05 in Jenkins' Vega came in the second round, but he fouled away a 9.07 in the semifinals against eventual winner Wayne Gapp's 8.84. Things did not go too well at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. It was a 32 car field, and Paul only qualified #23 with a 9.30/147.78. That set up a first-round meeting with Jenkins, who qualified #7 with a 9.10. With a two-tens disadvantage, Blevins pushed the 'tree too hard and fouled against "Grumpy," who would have been hard to catch anyway as he ran 9.02. |

Notes: Photo of car in C/G trim. | Bob Glidden ran his "new" '70 Mustang at both the AHRA and NHRA Winternationals (winning both), but at the IHRA Winternationals at Miami-Hollywood, he was running his "trusty" Pinto. It turned out pretty well for him. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.73 and then ran a best of 8.70 during eliminations to reach the final against Wayne Gapp who had also switched from his 4-door Maverick to a Pinto for this race. Gapp had also been running 8 70s so it was going to be a good final. Unfortunately, Glidden got out of shape in the final and had to shut off while Gapp ran 8.70 for the victory. Bob then switched back to his '70 Mustang to win the NHRA Gatornationals. After that, he had all kinds of problems attempting to sort out his new Mustang II. He switched back and forth between the two Mustangs and the Pinto sat. In July, the car was sold to Clyde Brandon and Gene Turnage. In the meantime, he bought Lou Oleynik's "Hauler" Mustang II that had been driven by Herb McCandless. The '70 Mustang was also sold to Larry Sengstack. With all the car shuffling supposedly out of the way, he concentrated on the new Mustang II. He did alright with the car, winning the fourth NHRA Division 3 race, but it didn't respond to changes as well as some of his other cars. The wins were definitely not coming like they were earlier in the year. So, after the NHRA US Nationals, he borrowed back the Pinto he had sold to Brandon and Turnage and ran it at the final NHRA Division 3 race at Bowling Green. It proved to be a wise decision as he had been in a slump and his points lead had dwindled. This car most likely gave him his NHRA Championship. At the Bowling Green event, he qualified #2 in the eight-car field with an 8.85 behind Gapp's Maverick at 8.80. Bob improved to an 8.82/154.10 in the opening round over a fouling Norm Paddack. In the semifinal, Sam Gianino also fouled against him and his 8.88/154.10 moved into a final round showdown with Gapp. It was a close race, but Bob's 8.90/154.63 (Top Speed) got the win over the Maverick's close 8.91/153. A deal was struck between Glidden and Brandon & Turnage and Bob continued to use the car for the rest of the year. At the NHRA Fallnationals, the car still ran with the Brandon and Turnage lettering. Bob really showed them there. He reset both ends of the NHRA National record to 8.72/156.25 in qualifying #1. Only fifteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field so he made an "odd-lot" solo in round one, and ran 8.87/152.58. A second round 8.95/153.84 beat Gary Coe and in the semifinals, Ken Dondero's 8.93/152 in Bill Jenkins' Monza fell to Glidden's 8.87/154.90. It was another Gapp vs.5 Glidden final and like all their finals, it was close. Glidden’s 8.84/155.44 got the win over Gapp's 8.85/153. |

Notes: Joniec won the Connecticut Dragway Opener in April. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 9.35/147.29 beat Harvey Cohen's Pinto. He took a gamble on the lights in the semifinal and won as his 9.33/147.54 defeated Richie Zul's 9.49/112. Zul had run 9.02 in the first round. He faced Dennis Ferrara in the final. Dennis' Camaro was at least two-tenths off the Pinto's times, so he gambled in the final and fouled. Al's 9.22/148.27 got the victory. Shortly after that, he was at Cecil County for its Spring Pro Stock Championships. This was another eight-car field and in round one his 9.24/147 fell to Frank Iaconio's 9.07/151. H came back out for a consolation race where he ran 9.22/149 in losing to Frank Russo's 9.09/152. On May 11, Joniec was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Scott Shafiroff. Al's 9.47/140.62 was no match for Shafiroff's 9.03/149. Al was back at Maple Grove on June 22 for the NHRA Division One race. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 9.42/143.54 lost to Richie Zul's 9.10/149. |
