Notes: John was at OCIR in mid-August for its Summer Showdown race. It was only a four-car show, and the cars had one shot at qualifying. Unfortunately, John broke and blower belt and failed to qualify. After replacing the belt, he came back out and ran against Hayden Proffitt's jet. His 6.65/214 lost to the jet's 6.47. In the first week of October, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. He was a little "off" on that day as his 6.39/220.58 (eighth alternate) failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field. At OCIR for the NHRA World Finals, things went better where his 6.17/225.56 qualified #14. But he slowed to 6.67/159.85 in the opening round and lost to Jim Dunn's 6.15/231. Lombardo was back at OCIR in November for its Manufacturer's Meet. He ran 6.54/193 in his first race, losing to Tom McEwen's 6.26/232. In his second race, he ran 6.16/229 over Ezra Boggs, who broke in the "Moby Dick." |

Notes: This is Al's '73 Vega with the new '74 front end for 1974. After having Tom Prock ('71) and Butch Maas ('72) as drivers of his FCs, Al returned to the wheel in '73 and drove his own cars until he retired in 1982. Al ran 6.59 at Cecil County, 6.69 at Gainesville, and 6.43 at Indy. The best NHRA times were 6.439/220.04 at Indy 1974. Set Low ET at Capitol Raceway Coke meet at 6.56. Al competed at the Canadian FC Nationals held in Edmonton in August. It was a sixteen-car show, and in round one, his 6.94 defeated a crossed-up Ron O'Donnell in the "Damn Yankee." In the second round, both he and his opponent, Paul Radici, got out of shape, but Bergler got to the stripe first. In yet another slipping and sliding race, both he and Roger Lindamood were all over the track, but the "Color me Gone" got to the other end first. Shortly after that (August 10), he was at Irwindale for its Grand Prix race. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the opening round, Al made an easy solo pass when Gary Burgin's car failed to fire. In round two, he shut down early and lost to the eventual winner, Mike Halloran's 6.57. At Indy, for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, he ran 6.48/220.58 to qualify #14. In round one, his 6.47/218.44 beat Tom Hoover's 6.53/217. He gave the eventual winner a good race in the second round, where both drivers ran 6.43, but the "Snake" got the win. Al was at Englishtown in Oct for its Fallnationals. It was a fourteen-car show, and in the opening round of competition, his 7.58/139.98 beat Jake Crimmins' 8.29/175 in a tire-smoker. In round two, he got an easy solo when Fred Forkner's car got stuck in reverse. He ran 6.91/205.01 to beat Joe Jacono's 6.94/184 in the semifinal. He faced Al Marshall in the final, and Marshall was tough as he had set Low ET at 6.52. Bergler made it easy for him by lighting up the tires. Marshall ran 6.75/214 for the victory. |

Notes: Elephant-motored Maverick replaced the former Ramchargers '67 Dart that MCS campaigned for several years on the Midwest UDRA circuit. Car was featured in the 6/71 issue of Speed & Super Car. - RT | Confirmed 7.62 at Miami. The 6.81 seems very quick for Danny to have run in 1971. Confirm. - Danny White | Magazine article cites 7.18, so that is much quicker than the 7.62. - BP | Danny Miller's new Maverick for '71 was featured in the September '71 issue of HR. The car used a 120" chassis built by MCS Enterprises. The Maverick body was from Fiberglass Trends and was chopped two inches. The engine was a 426 Hemi that was overbored .030. M/T rods held Jahns pistons and an Isky cam was used. The heads were done by S&K and Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold. The GMC 6/71 was set up by Larry Bowers. An Enderle injector sat up top. The power was transmitted to the 5.13 Mopar rear by a Lenco transmission. It weighed 2,050 lbs. The article stated that he had run 7.18 with the car. |

Notes: Murphy was at Lions on January 28 for AHRA's second half of its Winternationals. She qualified for the 32 car field with an 8.95. In the opening round of eliminations, her improved 8.74 lost to Marv Eldridge's 8.15. Paula was at Lions on March 30, where she made three runs. The first pass was an 8.99/143.34 that beat a tire-smoking Dale Pulde in Charlie Wilson's car. Murphy lost to Al Vanderwoude's 9.07/141 in the next race when she shut off to a 9.13/146.81. Her best run was 8.89/123.79, but she lost to Bob Pickett's 8.73/165. Paula faced off against Frank Federici's "Shark" Corvette in a best of three match race at Connecticut on July 20. Unfortunately, she lost all three races and the match, running times of 8.34/173.41, 8.43/170.45, and 8.33/172.74 against Frank's 7.99/185, 8.11/182, and 8.24/155. Notes: Jim qualified #22 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.79/215.31. A first-round 6.77/221.67 lost to Larry Fullerton's 6.58/217. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Jim qualified #8 with a 6.55, but he lost to Dave Condit driving the "L. A. Hooker" in the first round. He was at Green Valley Raceway in May for the AHRA Grand American where he reached the semifinals before he fouled against Tommy Grove. Dragway 42 hosted the next AHRA Grand American at the end of May and Jim qualified #3 for the sixteen-car field. In the first round his 8.56/134.52 advanced as his opponent, Dale Pulde, broke in the Mickey Thompson Grand Am. But in round two, it was Jim who broke, giving "Jungle Jim" Liberman a free ride into the semifinals. On June 3, he was at Denver's Century 21 Raceway for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified with a 6.92, but lost early. The following weekend he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.93. He improved to 6.79/218.97 in the first round, to upset Ed McCulloch's 6.84/218. In round two, he defeated Don Schumacher with a 6.84/211.76, but a semifinal 6.99/176.47 lost to eventual winner Dave Beebe's 6.71/222. Jim won the Amarillo WCS meet in June 73 with a 6.98/189.49 over Leroy Goldstein who smoked the tires in the Candies & Hughes car. Early in July, he was at Kansas City for the AHRA Grand American race. Jim reached the final against Raymond Beadle, but both went up in smoke and Beadle's 7.39/223 got the victory over Nicoll's 7.59/189. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.58 qualified #10 and in the opening round, his 6.57 beat Tom Prock. But in round two, his 6.83 lost to Dale Emery's 6.46. He got a win at St. Louis on August 5 for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Jim qualified #4 with a 6.65 and he beat Ira Hollensbe and Doc Halladay in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, Billy Meyer smoked the tires against him and Nicoll's 6.65/209.31 moved into the final against Don Prudhomme. The "Snake" had run 6.67 in his semifinal win so Jim had lane choice. It proved worth having as his 6.63/210.78 took the win over Prudhomme. Shortly after that he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. The show was run differently as all cars raced the first-round, but only the eight lowest ETs, win or lose, moved into the first-round of the race. Jim’s 6.71/204.54 made the show, but in the first round, his 6.66/210.77 lost to Clare Sanders' 6.58/222 in the "Ramchargers" car. He ran at the AHRA National Challenge race at the end of August. A 6.58/213.27 qualified #5 in the 32 car field. He improved slightly to a 6.56/218 in the first round, to beat alternate DeWayne Engness. In round two, his 6.72/217 stopped Sush Matsubara and a round three 6.96/205 put Meyer on the trailer. He beat a tire-smoking Schumacher in the semifinal with a 6.77/206 and was to face Prudhomme for the money. Unfortunately, while pulling up to the line in the final, the car started leaking oil and he was shut down. Schumacher got back in on the "break rule.” | AKA Superman. Best NHRA national event times were 6.463 at Indy and 226.13 at Ontario. We originally had a 6.25/240 recorded for 1973, which was too fast for that year. Did Jim ever run those numbers? |

Notes: The first Fever Vette, which was red, crashed at US 30. It was the first time we had run it with a new high-compression stroker motor I had been working on. The run previous someone oiled down the track, and, as was the custom at 30, they just sprinkled some rice hulls on the oil, waved some brooms at it, and told us to fire up. I objected, but they said we had to either run or pull the car off the starting line. So we did. When Ed crossed the rice hulls, the car got loose, he got in the dirt, the left-front spindle and kingpin assembly broke off the axle, the car dug in, and went end over end. The best pass for Fever in '74 was 6.61/227 at US 30. - Paul Stenquist |
