Notes: In 1972, this was the car to beat anywhere as Larry Fullerton set track records wherever he ran. But as the seventies progressed, the car's performance waned. By '78, Fullerton had a rough time making the car run numbers similar to '72, and breakage took its toll. Larry was at Rockingham on April 30 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #6 with a 7.07/155. Unfortunately, the car failed to fire for his first-round race against Les Cassidy. In May, he was at Blaney for a four-car match. Dale Pulde won the match. Fullerton ran a best of 6.99 there. Shortly after that, he was in Atlanta for the IHRA Dixie Nationals. He qualified #7 but lost early in eliminations. He competed at Union Grove for the three-day Olympics of Drag Racing. All cars in attendance ran the first round, with the four Low ET cars moving into the semifinal. On both Saturday and Sunday, eighteen cars were competing. Fullerton did not run quick enough to advance to the semifinal. The field swelled to twenty-four on Monday (May 29), but Larry still didn't make the final four. In June, a 6.61/206.42 qualified #8 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. But he broke against Mike Miller in the first round. A couple of days later (June 21), he was at Englishtown for the Crazy Eddie Night of Thrills race. All cars there made two runs. In Larry's first race, his 6.86/205.94 lost to Pete Williams' 6.18/212 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In his second race, a 7.07 lost to Cassidy's 6.33. On July 9, Fullerton was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division 3 race. An opening round 6.75 beat Pulde's quicker 6.72, and he shut down to a 12.14 that still advanced when Tom Anderson got out of shape. He went up against Paul Radici in the final, but Fullerton's bad luck continued as the car broke, giving Radici a solo for the win. Larry then went to Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he ran 6.52 to qualify #7. In the first round, his 6.69/211.76 lost to Anderson's 6.25/227. Larry did not run at any NHRA events in 1978. |

Notes: Gordon had one of the six FC's competing at St. Louis on April 9. His 7.35 lost to Gary Henderson's 7.02 in the "Super Duster" in the opening round. He also lost his second race to Cutis Wasson. Paul was at Dallas early in June for the IHRA Longhorn Nationals. He qualified #12 with a 7.20 and, in the first round, beat Wayne Mahaffey in the "Alabamian." Unfortunately, it cost him a motor, and in round two, his ailing 10.46 lost to eventual winner Richard Tharp's 6.50/206 in the "Blue Max." 1640 lbs., high gear only. |

Notes: Al Graeber ran his own chassis shop, Speedway Engineering. His shop built the 120" chassis as well as all the tinwork on Graeber's new Charger. The engine was a 426 Hemi that used a 1/4" stroker crank from C&T. The Cragar-driven GMC 6/71 used a Hilborn injection unit. A TorqueFlite transmission delivered the power to the rear. The Charger 500 body was a product of Fiberglass Ltd. Al was at Maple Grove on April 27 for a best of three match race against Frank Federici and his "Shark" Corvette. It was not Graeber's day as he lost three straight with an 8.30/174.41 best. Flip roof, removable front. Also ran 7.72 at York. |

Notes: The Tension Charger was a Ramchargers car that had been crashed. Dad front-halved & re-vamped the chassis & mounted the body himself. Later, he & Don Gatliff cut & sectioned the body to make it a Mini-Charger. — Brian Greer | Shirl was at Gainesville in Jan for a best-of-three-match race against Tom Donahee. In the first race, Greer's 8.78/161.57 beat the Corvair's off pace 9.77/165, but in the second race, Tom's 8.57/176 evened the score over Shirl's 8.92/126.65. The final race had Shirl win by resetting both ends of the track record with an 8.09/180.72 over Tom's 8.38/174. Times and info from National Dragster, 8/23/74. |

Notes: This new photo is the second chassis during the last year of touring. Note that the spoiler on the roof has been removed, and a large aluminum spoiler is now on the rear. I can't remember where this was taken. We ran consistent mid 7's on tour with this set-up. Oh, to be young again. - WG | Gunter was at Beeline Dragway on February 21 for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32 car field, and his 7.84 qualified easily. In the first round, he faced Sam Miller but was shut off with a water leak, giving Miller a solo into round two. In July, Gunter went to Numidia Dragway for a best-of-three-match race against Bob Parmer's AA/FA Fiat. Warren caught Bob napping in their first race, and his 7.56/181.08 beat the Fiat's much quicker 7.13/187. Bob won the second race with a 7.69/185 when the VW broke and slowed to 7.95/138.46. Gunter came back in the third race to win the match with a 7.50/185.56, beating Bob's 7.85/173. On August 12, Warren was at Numidia Dragway for a best-of-three-match race against Pete Hill. It wasn't the little VW's day as it lost all three races. Still, Gunter did manage a 7.22/189.86 best. His other runs were 7.62/157.89 and 7.31/186.32. That wasn't far off of Pete's 7.18/203 best. In September, this little bug went all the way to the final at New England's Funny Car Nationals. It was a 32 car field, and Warren beat Frank Oglesby in the opening round and a 7.65 at only 145.16 in round two beat Fred Goeske. He beat Dean LaPole's Chevy-powered "King Camaro" in the third round, and Bob Cain crossed the centerline against him in the semifinals. He went up against "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final, and the VW went every which way but straight, slowing to a 10.69 runner-up finish to Jim's 6.95. In a December issue of Dag News, the car was offered for sale for $4,500.The ad did not state if the engine was included. |

Notes: Coming off some successful years in gassers with multiple wins and records in BB/GS, this was Holt's first Alabamian funny car. Holt, who passed away in October 2007, recounted in an online post that this Logghe-chassis car was built in 1970 and burned at Gainesville, Fla., later that year. - RT |

Notes: Henry started his season at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified eleventh with a 6.51, but a first-round 6.65/201.34 failed to get past Sush Matsubara's 6.46/211. Harrison was at Fresno Dragway in March for its Race of Champions event. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.88 qualified #7. In the opening round of eliminations, his off-pace 7.21/181 lost to Twig Zeigler's 6.50/220. |

Notes: In my opinion, this was Henry Harrison's best year behind the wheel of an FC. Before this, his biggest claim to fame had been his booting Mickey Thompson's Mustang to a 6.54/226 to take Low ET at the '71 NHRA US Nationals. Having Amos Satterlee as his crew chief didn't hurt either. Ten years earlier, Amos had put a blower on Eddie Schartman's SOHC-powered Comet and made him the most feared Funny Car at the end of the '67 season. While it was no longer a SOHC, he still knew how to make a KB run. Henry's season started at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where he ran 6.79 to qualify #4 for the sixteen-car field. Traction was poor at the meet, and in the first round, he lost to Jack Maroney's 7.65/189 with a 7.69/146. He then went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. It was another sixteen-car show, and his 6.45 qualified #6. His 6.48/226.70 beat Wayne Stoeckel in the opening round of eliminations. But in round two, the eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.56/204, beat his 6.85/225.56. He competed at the Bakersfield March Meet, but a 6.65/220.58 lost to Bryan Raines' 6.61/218 in the first round. On April 2, Harrison was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven race. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.44/226.70. In the opening round, his 6.40/226.70 lost to Jim Dunn's 6.32/215. In May, he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division 7 race. It was a tough show as his 6.34 qualified on the "bump." But he improved to 6.29/229.59 to beat Tom McEwen's sleepy 6.07/217 in round one. In the semifinals, Dave Condit's 6.70/181 in the "L. A. Hooker" lost to Henry's 6.26/225.00. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and the "Snake's" 6.04/242 got the victory over his 6.37/229.00. Things went better on June 10 at OCIR's Funny Car Spectacular. He beat Russell Long, driving the "Sundance" Arrow in round one. A second-round 6.22 (Low ET) at 223.32 sent Jim Adolph packing for home. Henry got a solo in the semifinals when Gary Densham broke, and he ran 6.43/214 to advance. In the final, he faced Pat Foster, who was driving for Joe Pisano. Pat had problems and shut down to 12.03 while Henry won another 6.22 at 226. He was at Sacramento for the third NHRA Division Seven race. He set Low ET in qualifying for the eight-car show with a 6.26/224.44. He opened eliminations with a 6.41/224.44 to stop Densham at 6.54/207. Henry got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinals as only six cars had shown. He advanced with a 6.33/227.85. He went up against Dave Hough, driving the "Super Shops" Arrow in the final. Dave got the victory with a 6.27/229, while Harrison's motor-blowing 6.40/214.29 got him the runner-up spot. Harrison won the fourth NHRA Division 7 race held at Bonneville Raceway. He set Low ET at 6.52 but only needed a 7.19/219.52 in the final to win as Foster lost a blower belt. On July 29, he qualified #3 at the PDA Championships held at OCIR with a 6.32. He made it into the final before losing to future superstar John Force. He was also runner-up at Beeline's Gold Cup Funny Car race. There it was Tripp Shumake who stopped him in the final. | 1978 D7 Champs. Satterlee worked at Keith Black's at the time, where Engle Cam alumni Wes Cerny was Shop Foreman at one time. - Joe Moore |
