Notes: In the first week of May, John raced at the NHRA Division Six opener at Seattle. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.54/210.77 qualified #4. An easy 7.02/168.53 beat Bill Spevacek in round one, and in round two, his 6.70/173.07 defeated Richard Rogers. In the semi-final, John's 6.60/196.07 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.48/225. The following week, he was in Portland for the Oregon Open. His 6.54 qualified #6 in the eight-car field. He improved to 6.49/202.70 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough as he lost to Bob Pickett's 6.26/225 in the M/T Grand Am. Shortly after that, he was at Fremont for a ten-car show. All cars ran two races, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. His car broke a magneto in his first race, and McCulloch soloed with a 6.48. In his second race, Collins ran 6.64/197.80 to beat Gary Burgin, who shut off to 7.49/125. Unfortunately, his times were not good enough to advance to the final. John was at Sacramento in June for the second NHRA Division Seven race. He lasted until the final before his late 6.94/191.49 finished runner-up to Jake Johnston's 7.09/134 in the "Pisano and Matsubara" Monza. Collins competed at the World Series of Drag Racing event held at Cordova in August. It was a two-day race, and on Friday, he shut down against Don Prudhomme in the first round. He also had problems in the first round on Saturday, where his 9.44 lost to Tommy Ivo's 6.63/221. Collins ran one of his better times of the year in the second round, where his 6.36/221.61 defeated Ron Colson's 6.60/218 in the "Hawaiian." All cars made two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Despite John's great run, his time did not advance to the final. John was the 4th alternate at his only NHRA national event, the World Finals (times not reported). | This one debuted as the McEwen team car in '76 after retiring the old '72 car Collins ran at Puyallup earlier that year (WOT burnouts.) He raced at the 64 funny car event in Seattle. - Joe Moore |

Notes: The "Hawaiian" qualified #9 at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, which meant that Colson had to run low qualifier Don Prudhomme in the opening round. Don's 6.23 put Ron's 6.32 on the trailer. The team was really running well at Sacramento for the Governor's Cup Championships. Colson ran a 6.16 on his way to a final-round meeting with Gordie Bonin. In the final, he improved to 6.14/226 to win over Bonin's 6.20. In Ontario for the NHRA World Finals, Ron's 6.18/225.56 qualified #2 behind Prudhomme. An opening round 6.24 beat Bonin, but in the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off to 8.66 in a loss to Ed McCulloch. The best NHRA national event times were the 6.184 at Ontario and 230.17 at Seattle (plus a nice 6.191 at Indy). South Chicago Auto Parts sponsored. |

Notes: Courtie started his season at Irwindale for the Grand Premiere race. He qualified #15 with a 7.19, and in the opening round, his car lost fire against Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." In March, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven Opener. Only Fourteen cars showed, and Jeff qualified last. He went up in smoke in round one, and lost to Gary Densham. On April 17, he was back at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Championships. Both he and Dave Condit smoked the tires in their first-round race, but Jeff recovered first, and his 7.38/170 won. He shut off with problems in his second race, losing to Neil Leffler. Jeff was at OCIR for the PDA Championships on July 31. All eight cars ran two rounds of racing. Jeff ran times of 6.91 and 13.66. | In '76, when NDs were the size of books, Courtie won the June Nitro Championships, out-coasting Brad Anderson's Dart. Anderson would have gotten him cold if nothing went wrong. Both SIR 64-FC regulars. One of the cars at the Fremont D7 featured in "American Nitro." - Joe Moore |

Notes: In August, Jake was driving the "Jungle Jim" Monza at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Twenty-one cars were attempting to qualify for the eight-car field and his 6.56 qualified #7. But in the first round, he got out of shape against Tom Hoover and shut down. Shortly after that, he was at Atco for its FC Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show, and in round one, his 6.67/211 beat Larry Fullerton's similar 6.67/211. This race was run with all cars running one round, and the two cars with the lowest ETs ran in the final. Jake's time was not good enough to make the final. |

Notes: A Rat-motor holdout. Vega's body was built and painted by Don Kirby. The team previously ran a BBC-powered AA/FD. The car was featured in the 11/72 Drag Racing. Gary was at Beeline Dragway in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He had one of the several Chevy-powered FC's that attempted to qualify for the 32 car field. None of them made the show. He also tried to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he failed to qualify there as well. Cromwell was at the Seattle Northwest Open on April 29. He could not qualify for the sixteen-car field, but Jerry Ruth hurt the engine in his Mustang and could not compete. This allowed Gary to take his spot in the field. His 7.06/199 beat Jim Adolph's troubled 8.01 in the "Rat Trap" in the opening round. Unfortunately, the Chevy powerplant broke against Kenny Goodell in round two. |

Notes: Davis was at Beeline Dragway on January 28 for the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the 32 car field. He also was unable to qualify at NHRA Pomona (times not reported). Things did not go well at Lakeland on March 4 during qualifying for the IHRA Winternationals. He and Lou Azar, in the "Fireball Vega," were both about to make a qualifying run. Lou got out of shape and crossed into Preston's lane, and the Mustang ran headfirst into the Vega. Both cars were damaged pretty badly, but both drivers were ok. Preston tried and failed to qualify at NHRA Gainesville as well (times not reported). That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year. Davis had a bad fire in qualifying at Blaney in July for the NHRA Division 2 race. He only received a slight burn to his right hand, but the car was severely damaged. Yellow car departed from Ray's traditional red, white, blue scheme as it was painted on the coast before checking with him. |

Notes: Ran Coca-Cola Circuit. The car served as one of three cars being campaigned at the time, including a Vette and Javelin. The car was actually Fred Goeske's '69 Road Runner with a Challenger body mounted for Coke Circuit events. Eldridge was killed that Winter in Hawaii while piloting a blown Anglia. 120" Ron Scrima (Exhibition Engineering) chassis, B&M Torqueflite. Super Stock September 1970, claimed this car ran a stock-size 426 Hemi and ran a best of 7.28/202.70. |

Notes: Per Bill Duke, all Sharks were 392 powered. Confirmed 7.95 at Cecil County. | Frank Federici continued to use his '67 car throughout the '68 season. A December '69 Speed and Supercar magazine claimed that the car had run a best of 7.60/203.87. Frank ran at National Trail on June 23. He made two exhibition passes. The first was an 8.24/180.72 that tied the former track ET record and set a new track speed record. On his second pass, an 8.12/181.44 reset both ends of the track record. On July 27 he made it into the final on Saturday at the Cars All-Star International at Cecil County. He had beaten Malcolm Durham earlier with a 7.95/187.10, but in the final, an 8.25/181.08 lost to Dick Loehr's 7.86/182. He didn't do as well on Sunday and failed to make the final rounds. Frank faced off against Bill Lawton at a best two out of three match race at Connecticut on August 4. In the first race, a 7.68/171 by Lawton beat his 8.58/167.28 and in the second race, he lost again when he broke a rear end giving Bill the match race win. | We formerly listed 7.895/195. |

Notes: There were several incarnations of the Shark. Per Bill Duke, all Sharks were 392 powered. Frank Federici loved his Corvettes. He raced them regularly until he decided to go the Funny Car route in '67 with his first "Shark" Corvette. He ran that first Funny Car for two seasons before building this one for '69. Like his first Corvette FC, this one also used a Logghe chassis. The Corvette body came from Fiberglass Ltd., and Al Bergler did the tin. Ed Pink built the 392 Hemi. Mondello was responsible for the work on the heads. Young crew chief Phil Roberts was in charge of keeping the 1,500 hp in top condition. Frank lost a best-of-three-match race in April to Don Schumacher. In the first race of the match, not only did he foul, but the transmission let go as well. Schumacher gave him extra time to repair, and the two lined up for their second race. Once again, Frank's transmission went away, and Don got his second win and the match race victory. He beat Dick Loehr's Mustang at Connecticut two straight with a 7.90 best and then went to Maple Grove on April 27, where he defeated Al Graeber's "Tickle Me Pink" Charger three straight. Frank ran 8.18 and 8.14 to win the match. He was at Epping on May 11, where he put Jimmy King's Top Fuel engine in his car. He only made one run with the engine, a 7.99/182. Maybe "King and Marshall" were preparing to go Funny Car racing. Shortly after that (May 17), he was at Capitol Raceway for its Mr.Chevrolet Invitational race. In the opening round, Mike Burkhart's Camaro broke against him. It was a good thing it did as Frank's Corvette blew a transmission. In round two, his 8.13/180.00 defeated Mel Perry's 8.41/189. He lost in the semifinal to "Jungle Jim" Liberman when Federici had his brakes fail, and he could not stage the car. Another match race was run on May 27 at Maple Grove against Al Graeber in the "Tickle Me Pink" Charger. Frank won all three races with a best of 8.14/176.12. In July, Bruce Larson got the best of Frank at a match race at Great Meadows. Frank lost a transmission in the first race and got outrun in the second, giving Bruce two straight for the match race win. On July 20, he raced at the Cars Magazine Meet, but he lost to Don Schumacher's 7.54/201 in the first round. Frank had beaten Jim Liberman at a match race on September 6 and had hurt his motor while taking the match. He had no time to fix it as he had to race in Connecticut the next day (September 7). So, he pulled the piston and rod and ran on seven cylinders! An 8.50/174.41 beat Al Graeber's 8.74/156 in the first round, and in the semis, an 8.57/169.94 beat Kosty Ivanof's 9.01. In the final, he met Malcolm Durham and lost with an out-of-shape 13.39 to Durham's 8.11/174. But he sure had the fans pulling for him when after the loss, with both chutes dragging behind the car, he went down the return road, stopped, and did a burnout. After that, he bowed to the fans. The next day, September 8, they did it again at Connecticut, but this time with sixteen cars. Unfortunately, Frank lost fire in the first round against Paul Stefansky. Frank ran a known best of 181.44 with his own engine. |

Notes: John was still driving the Corvette when he showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His best run in qualifying was 6.22/229.59 that was good for the second alternate for the show. He also ran at the Bakersfield March Meet but failed to reach the finals. On March 15, John was the 9th alternate at Gainesville (times not available). He was still driving the 'Vette at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals on March 23, where his 6.48/225.56 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. John beat Shirl Greer in the first round, before losing to eventual winner Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max" in the semifinals. At Columbus, John showed up with the BIll-Schultz tuned Chevy Citation. |

This car got major press when it was the subject of a five-page feature in the 2/69 issue of Super Stock & Drag Illustrated. "SS&DI Drives a Fuel Funny Car" regaled readers with the (successful) efforts of SS&DI editor Jim McCraw to earn his NHRA Funny Car Competition license. - RT |
