Notes: Dick was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals in January He really ran well, qualifying #4 in the 32 car field with a 6.56/209.79. That was really impressive considering there were 75 cars attempting to make the show. An opening round 6.66/208.33 beat Larry Christopherson, but he broke on the run and was unable to return for round two. |

Notes: Know who had a good year in '73? Littlefield did. After being cannon fodder in '72, he really picked it up for '73. He started his season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere, where his 6.99 qualified #8 for the sixteen-car field. Another 6.99 in the opening round beat a crossed-up Joe Lee at 10.46. In round two, his 7.11 fell to Jeff Courtie's 7.07. Mert then went to OCIR for the second All-Pro race. A 6.90 qualified #6 in the eight-car show, and in round one, his 6.98/195.65 lost to eventual winner Pat Foster's 6.71/223 in the Barry Setzer Vega. The following weekend(January 28), he was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where 75 cars were attempting to qualify for the 32 car show. A 6.66/217.91 qualified #11. He lost to Kenny Bernstein driving Ray Alley's Charger in the first round. Shortly after that, he was back at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. His 6.80 qualified #6, and in the first round, both he and Leroy Chadderton driving the "Hawaiian" smoked the tires hard. The Charger got the "win" light. He qualified in the top half (#7) of the field for the Bakersfield March Meet but lost in the first round, when he shut off on the line against Tommy Grove. The final OCIR All-Pro race was run on March 24, and it featured sixteen-car fields. Mert qualified #3 with a strong 6.70. But in the opening round, his 6.87/205.47 lost to Sush Matsubara's 6.84/220. Early in April, he was back at OCIR for an eight-car show. Littlefield qualified #6 with a 7.25, and he smoked the tires in the opening round and shut down to a 14.98/66.12 loss against Roger Garten, who advanced the "War Horse" at 7.30/202. Another early loss came at the Coca-Cola Championships at Irwindale, where he lost to eventual winner Mike Snively in the first round. Things started to pick up at the Las Vegas Open, where he beat Frank Rupert and Bob Pickett (Lil' Demon) to reach the final. In the final, he finished runner-up to Dave Beebe's 6.77 in the "Mr. Ed" car with a 7.12. He won the NHRA Division 7 race at Bakersfield with a final round 7.07/213.28 over Danny Ongais' 7.35/205. Another runner-up finish came at the OCIR Championships in June. He qualified #1 with a 6.89. An opening round 6.95/207.85 beat Pickett and a semifinal 6.70/216.34 took out Mike Van Sant, who shut off in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" car. A final round 7.07 lost to Roger Garten's 6.84 in the "Warhorse." He ended June with another runner-up finish at the OCIR Nitromethane Championships, where Pickett beat him in the final. Mert ran well at OCIR on July 22 for the PDA Championships. In the first round, he beat Jim Dunn with a 6.77/215.31, but in the second round, he lost to eventual winner Ongais. Littlefield won at Irwindale on August 4, where a final round 6.73/217.39 beat Joe Lee's 6.86/209. Mert qualified number two at Salt Lake City WCS meet in 8/73 at 7.343 in the high altitude. He won the Irwindale Back to School Championships. It was a sixteen-car show where he ran 6.91/215.31 over Rupert's 6.94/208. A second-round 6.81/215.82 beat Van Sant's 6.99/209, and a semifinal 6.79/215.31 beat an out-of-shape Don Schumacher. In the final, he faced Gerry Glenn in the "Plueger and Gyger" Mustang. A final round 6.68/216.86 got the victory over Glenn's crossed-up 7.83/141. Mert was back at Irwindale on September 29 for its Grand Prix race. He qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.80. Glenn had problems against him in the first round, and shut down to 7.65/140, while Mert advanced with a 6.97/200.44. He surprised Ed McCulloch in round two, where his 6.85/218.97 upset Ed's quicker 6.82/221. But he slowed to an off-pace 7.78 in the semifinal, which eventually lost Don Prudhomme's 6.69. |

Notes: Keith Martin lived in LA. He was from Norman, Oklahoma. His cars were "Shyster" because he was a full-time lawyer with only spare time on hand. He typically built one engine to go and one gutted engine for show. His driver had to use the one engine for the whole season because the other engine was not really a spare engine having had no pistons, cam, valves, etc. He built the transport trailer in his garage. The spare engine sat in the trailer to make it look like he had a spare engine for the competition. The others he was running against could sometimes afford two or three engines for the weekend while his engine had to last the whole season. During the offseason, he would build up a new motor that had to be used throughout the next season without any major repairs. He quit driving himself because he was 6 foot 6 and weighed in at over 300 pounds. He just built the cars and, when he could, would attend the races to tune up the engine and do minor repairs. His daughter, Kathy, would tag along. She still has a Smokey and the Bandit Firebird with shaker hood in her garage gathering dust. Considering the low budget and part-time effort, he did quite well against the full-time professionals. He built a few engines for other people including some in NASCAR. He quit racing when it just got too expensive to compete. - Albert Clark (cousin) |
